President Obama came into the white house optimistic, but he did not realize that his mere existence was a challenge to the opposing side. I also think that it is weird that Obama is blamed for the lack of bipartisanship when it was the republicans that said they were against almost everything.

The federal government should not help the private banking sector for all the scandalous acts of handing out bonuses without proof of them deserving it. If they fail, let them fail. Go to a federal credit union if you cannot trust the private banking sector who use your money for their political manipulations. Cut them off.

I was a teenager during Obama’s tenure. I remember hearing his ideas on healthcare and thinking “why are people booing this?” “Why are people hating this?”. Obama did make some major mistakes during his time, he should have gathered from the first meeting with Republicans that they were corrupted by partisanship and would simply oppose him out of greed rather than principal. He should have walked out of that meeting and made it about how he presented his plan, but they didn’t even want to listen to it to help the American public. He should have been tough on the banks after the bonus fiascos. I respect the man for trying to work with people, but unfortunately people did not want to work with him. And from his presidency, the Republican Party learned that the best thing for themselves (not the American people) was to stonewall everything, yell the loudest, and throw tantrums to get what they want. Hell, the ACA is still here today because most Americans can’t survive without it- and it’s gutted compared to its original scope! Remember when the Republicans said that no God-fearing American would stand by a socialist institution? When they have, and they love it. The Republican Party is not the party of conservative idealism, it’s the party of crony political and capitalist families that wish to rule for the sake of ruling rather than helping this country be the best it can be.
Amen, brother. I was an idealistic twelve year old on the night he was first elected. Almost 27 now and couldn’t be more disappointed with the way things have gone. I think Obama is undeniably one of our better (best) presidents, but sadly he-at no fault of his own, I should say-paved the way for Trump and the mess we’re in now.

This originally aired in 2013 hence why it only covers his first term. They regularly rerelease their past documentaries which makes for a nice retrospective.
Some people out there would wish that you shouldn't have watched it and you should have missed it. Anyone who shows praise gets attacked by those distrustful to the government and/or are trying to silence NPR and PBS. But in this sense.. mmmm i think I've landed in one of these best documentary channels ever, to have people across the world know about current and old events it covered.

Is there a part two for his second term? I've been watching since the attack in Israel. I started with Netanyahu now im working my way up and i want to see the entire story line. Itd be nice to hear who influenced who during all these times. I know theres more to the story but pbs has done great with their past stories. No biased. It's organized and easy to understand. I want to hear about the possible conspiracies diring all this as well. Very interesting relationship with obama and Netanyahu especially with the money sent for aid.

Since Biden, the 1st world power USA has definitely suffered politically. It is no longer perceived as such. Economically, the United States has acted only egomaniacally over the past 25 years and has in no way borne its international and global responsibility. Only Trump said it. CLinton has given up on Europe and only said that the USA would now devote itself to the Asian market. Only then will a nation lose its position as the 1st economic world power.
Frontline had a great documentary called “battle zones: Ukraine and Syria” from 2014 that did a great job of explaining the beginning of the war in Donbas and crisis in Ukraine during the Obama years.
As an adult, I knew, personally, that when I no longer had job healthcare benefits the AFFORDABLE CARE ACT saved my life! Otherwise, I would have been denied healthcare coverage individually when I HAVE TO HAVE IT TO LIVE. That was the first and the last time, though, that I voted democrat and was proud of it. So sad to see how the party has gone so terribly WRONG since.
I was a navigator for the ACA and that was a lot of peoples stories. Even the people that was against Obama were at the table signing up.

Politics is the most difficult subject one can deal with. So much of negotiations to be done and lots of people have their own egos to win over first. And then, negotiate. It's such a laborious task. Any country President has to deal with a lot, and especially US plays a hard politics. Damn it.
It is impressive how President Obama's journey transformed the nation for good and for bad. And now, in his role as an elder statesman and billionaire, he still continues to demonstrate his care and willingness to serve people. This documentary is a testament to his commitment and the challenges. Great work PBS.

Remember getting up at 4 AM election day and when we saw the lines on TV, we were like, "time to get out there". The line was long, more people than I ever saw in my life. President Obama is kind of underrated considering we were in financial turmoil and wars our endless wars, and he unfortunately did not do enough for Main Street which has still repercussions, but he did save us from ourselves.

What I wish this country would come back to the middle ground where there isn’t so much division over identity politics. It doesn’t matter who you are when we are one America, united and free in a government by the people of the people and for ALL the citizens as one, indivisible nation with liberty and justice for all. Can we get back to that instead of how many boxes a person checks?

He was virtually a republican, at least fiscally.

I think PBS missed , deliberately or otherwise, an important plot point that was covered in some other documentary. Obama and Boehner almost had a deal done but then a splinter faction of the Republican Party offered Obama a better deal in higher revenue. Obama jumped at it and told Boehner that he had a better deal. This pissed off Boehner

I often wonder about how the presidency may or may not have been a pivotal moment for him in his personal development. He must have known and worked with some of those congresspeople that went all in on him for years prior to his presidency, only for many of them to essentially turn on him in a very adversarial way, likely rationalizing that none of it was _"personal"_ when politics is *very personal* - especially when every jab and jeer is public, it is not your hobby, but rather your _career_ and the way you earn your money, maintain your elite status and support your family.
