President George W. Bush announced the creation of the Office of Homeland Security during an address to a joint session of Congress on Sept. 20, 2001, nine days after the 9/11 terror attacks. "Our war on terror begins with al Qaeda, but it does not end there. It will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped and defeated," Bush said.

  • It is absolutely wild to see so many members of this house that are still serving today. The war on terror has not aged well, and neither have many of these members of congress.

  • It’s easy to look at this in hindsight and judge but at the time it was an attack that required a response. It wasn’t the going to war that was wrong, there had to be a response to make an example of someone, it was the way the war itself progressed, it lost sight of 9/11 and any retaliation and became an overreaching excuse to stamp authority where authority wasn’t realistic and the desired change was impossible. People that weren’t alive have no idea of the uncertainty that existed in the aftermath of an attack people had never anticipated. Even if there was intelligence that one may take place no one foresaw it happening on such an emphatic level, terrorists were using car bombs and explosives incapable of bringing walls down, there was nothing on this scale and however you look at it there hasn’t been since. If you do nothing it happens again, go to war and risk many things going wrong, or being judged negatively. The War failed because nobody planned for the longevity and the longevity was a result of not stopping when a plan says to stop. Easy to judge when you look back, impossible to anticipate when you’re looking forward.

I would add that appointing an ex- President's son as a new president also invites failure especially in a country like USA which proclaims and preaches the virtues of meritocracy to the world. One of the greatest deterrents for attacks is fear of retaliation. But when you appoint an unqualified individual to the most powerful role and give signals of nepotism tolerance, you lose that fear and invite problems.

  • Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld did not reveal that the Pentagon had lost $2.3 trillion the day before the September 11, 2001, attacks. The DoD had mentioned this number, which reflects transactions that could not be tracked, more than a year earlier. Donald Rumsfeld gave on Sept. 10, 2001, about the Pentagon’s business practices. “The technology revolution has transformed organizations across the private sector,” Rumsfeld said at one point. “But not ours, not fully, not yet. We are, as they say, tangled in our anchor chain. Our financial systems are decades old. According to some estimates, we cannot track $2.3 trillion in transactions.”

  • I sat in 7th grade history class when the world trade centers collapsed, my mother came to pick me and my brother up shortly afterward. She wasn’t sure what to do, it was televised on every channel. I can remember how upset everyone was, no matter the political party, and the unity that we displayed in the weeks afterward. While we didn’t find weapons of mass destruction in the end, we also didn’t have the benefit of hindsight in 2001. The people who were responsible are nothing more than an obituary, and for that I am grateful they can never attempt anything like 9/11 again. God bless the United States of America.

Did Canada not step up quite as much as we should have? Just an unintentional omission on the basis of "you can't call out everyone"? Not upset, just curious of the circumstances.

And he knew people from the different political side who disagreed with him but he didn't badmouth them and he didn't perpetuate lies about them either.
