From the archives: George W. Bush addresses Congress after 9/11 attacks in 2001
President George W. Bush announced the creation of the Office of Homeland Security during an address to a joint session of Congress on Sept. 20, 2001, nine days after the 9/11 terror attacks. "Our war on terror begins with al Qaeda, but it does not end there. It will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped and defeated," Bush said.

As a 2003 kid it’s really bizarre to see this part of american history. so close to my life but it’s a still story to me and seems much farther away that it was. Odd how perception works that way. God bless the people who died that day.
You're 8 years younger than me, yet you're a world away. The trauma of that day is relived by those who experienced it every day.
As someone born at the beginning of the Vietnam War; or should I say our direct involvement in it and who remembers the assassinations of MLK and RFK, this part of American history seems like just yesterday to me.
Exactly same here I was born in 2003 and feels bizarre and it’s like I know how 2001 felt like.
Yeah my girlfriend was born in 2003 and perceives 9/11 so differently... I was too young to really remember the gravity of the situation but definitely grew up in a different world than the one I was born in so I could feel a difference. It's interesting to get a different perspective of that time.
@@Mattdude411 I think it's a shame that your generation does not remember the way the country was pre 9/11. Before all the suspicion and distrust and all the 'high security presence' at every large event. My late father told me it wasn't even anywhere near that bad after Pearl Harbor, which he remembered well. It's not healthy psychologically to grow up in a climate of fear.
I am a Democrat and was not a George W. Bush fan yet I realized on the day he made this speech that he was a decent man and certainly a man wise enough to choose advisors and speech writers to communicate his faith in US citizens and his respect what we as Americans believe. It was nonpartison And it represented the dignity of our people and our country. What a difference in what we are experiencing now with no dignity, and separation of values within our country. I remain a Democrat but thank god we're able, or should be, to accept diversity and differences.

This was such a great speech 👏👏 from a brilliant leader
I always been with your GWB!!! "CLAPPING " 👏 🙌 👌
It’s easy to look at this in hindsight and judge but at the time it was an attack that required a response. It wasn’t the going to war that was wrong, there had to be a response to make an example of someone, it was the way the war itself progressed, it lost sight of 9/11 and any retaliation and became an overreaching excuse to stamp authority where authority wasn’t realistic and the desired change was impossible. People that weren’t alive have no idea of the uncertainty that existed in the aftermath of an attack people had never anticipated. Even if there was intelligence that one may take place no one foresaw it happening on such an emphatic level, terrorists were using car bombs and explosives incapable of bringing walls down, there was nothing on this scale and however you look at it there hasn’t been since. If you do nothing it happens again, go to war and risk many things going wrong, or being judged negatively. The War failed because nobody planned for the longevity and the longevity was a result of not stopping when a plan says to stop. Easy to judge when you look back, impossible to anticipate when you’re looking forward.
which war failed?
Only a fool would say iraq and Afghanistan was anything but a failure
@@Sfcfan120 failure is a big word in that context. so what is failure as defined then?
@@gavinmc5285It's answered in the original comment. Failure is not stopping when the plan (or common sense) says you need to stop. I would add that appointing an ex- President's son as a new president also invites failure especially in a country like USA which proclaims and preaches the virtues of meritocracy to the world. One of the greatest deterrents for attacks is fear of retaliation. But when you appoint an unqualified individual to the most powerful role and give signals of nepotism tolerance, you lose that fear and invite problems.

Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld did not reveal that the Pentagon had lost $2.3 trillion the day before the September 11, 2001, attacks. The DoD had mentioned this number, which reflects transactions that could not be tracked, more than a year earlier. Donald Rumsfeld gave on Sept. 10, 2001, about the Pentagon’s business practices. “The technology revolution has transformed organizations across the private sector,” Rumsfeld said at one point. “But not ours, not fully, not yet. We are, as they say, tangled in our anchor chain. Our financial systems are decades old. According to some estimates, we cannot track $2.3 trillion in transactions.”

I sat in 7th grade history class when the world trade centers collapsed, my mother came to pick me and my brother up shortly afterward. She wasn’t sure what to do, it was televised on every channel. I can remember how upset everyone was, no matter the political party, and the unity that we displayed in the weeks afterward. While we didn’t find weapons of mass destruction in the end, we also didn’t have the benefit of hindsight in 2001. The people who were responsible are nothing more than an obituary, and for that I am grateful they can never attempt anything like 9/11 again. God bless the United States of America.
And then he lied to us and got us in a stupid war which is the reason he has to hide and only comes out for funerals

Question as a Canadian, it was relatively surprising that he calls out so many nations, including having British PM there, but their closest (by proximity and trade) partner wasn't mentioned. Did Canada not step up quite as much as we should have? Just an unintentional omission on the basis of "you can't call out everyone"? Not upset, just curious of the circumstances.
Canada only agreed to send a few n.g. units and the p.m. of Canada said it's not their war to fight. Even though you can throw a rock from the trade center and land it in Canada
Everyone looks different to me and there’s unity in the house
What did you expect? Look at the speech Woodrow Wilson gave asking Congress to declare war in World War I or FDR's speech after Pearl Harbor. In times like these, Congress puts its differences aside. It's good politics.
Remember weapons of mass destruction? There was none
Do you know the facts? I seriously doubt it , you’re just regurgitating a viewpoint maybe do a little research.
George W Bush was without any doubt the best US President in American history and he was a master orator when spoke out during a state of the union speech or from the White House and he wasn't afraid to speak out against his enemies from different countries like Iraq and Iran. And he knew people from the different political side who disagreed with him but he didn't badmouth them and he didn't perpetuate lies about them either.
