  • I learned pretty quickly in law school that the professors LOVE to talk. Whenever they cold called me and I didn't read in advance, I'd try to turn the tables by asking questions back to the professor. As soon as the professor started to answer my question, I would look down and start skimming the case. You don't realize how fast you can read until you're in the cross-hairs of the Socratic method 😅😅

  • I’m in law school right now, and I’ll tell you what 1L is like! You know that meme of the dog sitting in a room on fire, and the dog says, “it’s fine.” That’s it. Law school is harder than you’d imagine, but it’s kinda manageable.

    @oliviab1049@oliviab10494 жыл бұрын
    • Just wait until finals, kinda manageable becomes everything is on fire and no one outside of law school can understand why you basically can't talk to them for a month until your tests are over. Don't worry, by 3L year it feels kinda more manageable, but it's still so hard!! Good luck with your 1L year!!! I think the first semester is the hardest, so once you get through this one, celebrate!!! It's a huge accomplishment!!!

For all the people asking if they should go to law school - my default answer is no, unless you REALLY, REALLY REALLY are 1000000% positive you want to be a lawyer/want a job you have to have a JD/law degree for. Law is fascinating, and I definitely want to work in the field, but the process of getting there is literal hell.

    • @@Law9652 those people are wrong. I'm not in law school yet but am on an educational path to go to law school. I want to become an immigration lawyer and it is 100% something that is morally and passionately driven. If you try to be a lawyer and aren't passionate to it for the"right" reasons then you aren't helping your client. The whole job is to be convincing and yeah, money is convincing, but it's a very inappropriate motivator.

  • Going to law school is like constantly drowning in a pool of your own tears but keeping your head right above to answer the questions from your lecturer so that u dont embarrass yourself in a class of 120+ persons. It's also having your class dropping from 180+ to 120 in a month

    • @@ji9567 Record your lectures if they allow you to. I've found that during the lecture it works better for me to sit and actively listen to what's being discussed rather than try to type or write down everything the lecturer says, I retained the content much better. You can't get away from the reading so use key word searches to read important parts of long cases (70 pages +). I have something called a quote bank, basically I type out important quotes from judges and legal scholars under a particular topic, comes in handy for essays and remembering principles of law without having to read the entire stack of cases again. Hope this helps :)

  • Anyone who is considering law school, please remember that it is not a universal experience. The student population is generally diverse in many ways, and everyone has their own reasons and interests. Some are there because their parents were lawyers, and their parents are paying for them to go. Some are first generation college graduates who had to take out loans to pay for it. The one thing that probably is universal is that it doesn't come naturally to many people. I made excellent grades in high school and undergrad with minimal effort. My good grades in law school took serious effort. Law school is hard work, but you can do it. It's worth it, if you really want to be there.

  • I see a lot of people saying that law school is the hardest thing to do, and while I agree, I have to say it is also the most satisfying feeling as well. Knowing you did good on a case, or answering a question that the professor asks when no one else knows the answer or just doing a good job on a brief is so satisfying. But it’s also hard because if you get a bad grade it does kill you. Your mental health will decline during it and you feel like you’re drowning. But once in a while one thing will happen and it will be like “oh god. I can breathe again”

    • Tubby Munchkin really?? i was considering doing either english or philosophy but I think English would be better for me. what would you say?

      @zandileike@zandileike3 жыл бұрын
    • property tracer the transition from English or philosophy to law will be challenging. Law is much harder and requires a minimum of 5-8 hours of work per day (including weekends) outside of class in order to excel. English is one of the easiest majors in undergrad and will likely not even require 25 hours of work outside of class the entire week (the busiest weeks will require more). Not saying it cannot be done because there are thousands of law students with English majors that excel. But you won’t be used to the hard work necessary to excel going into law school.

    • Tubby Munchkin alright, so what major would you recommend to do for my undergrad so I can be better prepared for law school?

      @zandileike@zandileike3 жыл бұрын
    • property tracer I recommend majoring in a science, math, or engineering. I did mechanical engineering and law school is easier than my undergrad. I was very prepared and finished at the top of my class. Also, engineering degrees make you very valuable to law firms as tech is expanding. This will help you get a top paying job.

So i quit, got me a PHD and now i combine my time between research work, teaching lawschool students and do some work for the authorities from time to time. Today i see how lucky i was that the law found me. I never get tired of wondering about different bigger legal pictures as well as drafting a memorandum or just analyse a supremecourt decission. If anybody should consider going to law school, just do it. But study with structure and make sure to understand the reasons behind a law or a rule. And taking a constitutional law class, and civil of whatever else they have to see if you could actually handle it. Stuff like that helped me. • From my experience (in Australia), NO. Not worth it one bit, even if you're an honours student with top grades and two internships under your belt. A waste of time, money, tears and sanity (I was so scarred by the entire thing, I actually have a video about it). Don't do it unless you literally will not be happy doing anything else; There are already far too many lawyers in the pool.
