This is such a brave & brilliant performance. You can see & hear that he’s nervous, delivering an unusually consequential & controversial opening monologue to an audience of mostly white liberal elites, many of whom are staring back at him unimpressed. @@mrit4099 This was before the elections, and the Oscars controversy provided enough material for this monologue. As for your answer, the Oscars have never been dependent on box office results. It's very well-known that flops are often nominated over actual hits. Even so, it ain't that simple to generate box office receipts when you're not given the opportunity to begin with. Take the most dominant genre in cinema today: superhero movies. It's not a level playing field when you're required to cast a white actor for iconic characters like Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Wolverine, etc... In terms of male leads alone; Blade, Hancock, & Black Panther are each a decade apart. Hell, Shang-Chi has yet to hit theaters.

It's not a level playing field when you're required to cast a white actor for iconic characters like Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Wolverine, etc...
