This was a brutal breakdown and my hands feel like they have been through a grinder but after a long week of Breaking Melting and Editing its definitely all worth it. A touch under the 30KG mark of pure copper from this big motor which im pretty happy about as i guessed i would only get about 25KG. Now I know this is a super long video but i had well over 9 hours of footage i compressed down to 34 minutes. HOW TO MIRROR FINISH A BAR
I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

I had honestly never considered a hardening liquid metal as freezing, but now I don't know how I ever thought differently.

I'm a blacksmith myself and I just love molten metal. Remarkable how much you got out of this motor. I also like the idea that nothing is wasted, even the resin is recycled. 😊
I know it's amazing and imagine how many bolsters you could make out of it that's the reason why I started getting into metal melting, I've melted down 2 miles worth at my estimate of copper for knife making and about a 1/4 of brass ahha

@@fudomyoo9762 Considering the giant punch hole in the case that was there before he started dismantling, that motor was not worth saving.
I work in places that use similar sized and bigger motors. The labor to repair them is prohibitive compared to the labor to build a new one in a mostly automated factory. The only non recyclable part of these is the plastic anyway.
The irony of working in a foundry and then I come home and watch these all night... Lol.

I worked in a foundry melting scrap aluminium to make small Aluminium castings. Corrosion and feeding the cold scrap too quickly into the molten metal would often cause explosions. This was in the days before Safety PPE so it was every man for himself as we scattered before the flying molten metal could land on us.

You deserve all of your success. I'm blown away by this content. It is described by 'TvTropes' as "simple", however I think this is far from true. The formula for the videos is simple - Get something, chop it up, melt it down... But then when you really watch the content, it's carefully made to provide an entertaining yet informative experience. This was the stator. Isn't there copper still to be processed from the armature?
No not in this motor, this motor has a squirrel cage rotor, and made up of silica iron, same material as the stator, and aluminum bars that are casted inside of the iron of the rotor.

This video brought back a lot of memories. I worked for my brother as an Electrician's helper and I collected all scrap coppers for 2 years and I saved around 1.5k lbs, and copper was $2.75/lb. when I sold them and made $4,065. BTW, I don't burn the insulation, I meticulously and patiently stripped them by hand using nothing but, my handy knife.
Thats surprisingly cheap. I though copper was expensive.

There's different grades of copper too.. Grades 3, 2, and 1.. The scale is based on how clean your copper is.. The last time I took copper back here in Detroit, it was $2.55/lb (pound) for grade #1... You got the most for grade #1... Grade #3 you got the least .. This was about 2 years ago.. & yes, I have heard that scrape prices have gone up
I worked in a recycling yard when I left school and loved doing this sort of stuff and playing with the big machines, it was a great outlet for my adhd
A company I worked for used to buy these used motors all the time, they are super heavy-duty and most of the time can be still used or repaired for a lot cheaper than the cost of a new one. Some of the companies near me, especially Procter and Gamble, used to tear down entire process lines and just "junk" everything, so the resellers that bought up the entire line used to have all these motors and tanks and other stuff we'd buy used. Saved so much money.
Hey BigStack! I used to work in a motor repair shop. The way we pulled the windings out of a motor that size was to use an air chisel to cut one of the ends off the winding, then use a flame wand to burn off all the varnish. The coils would just pull out of the other end. Lot less messy.

Nice tip. Would you heat the copper directly from the inside? Or heat the stator from the outside?
@@yaykruser You use a bigger torch if the little one does not work. you just have to get enough heat in there to decompose the varnish, it does not need to be red hot, just around 400C for the varnish and epoxy to vanish completely.

I remember taking apart a garden-variety table fan for a school project. Made quite a mess getting the copper coils out of the stator, so I knew this disassembly would be painstaking.

I'm a mechanic for a motor shop and last time we sold out scrap motors it was about $0.15 a pound, almost an entire shipping container is worth about $6k-$8k when we sold it. Price used to be about $0.40 a pound. Tons of work to process and refine that all, pretty sure it's just sent overseas
A lot of scrappers have that much copper kicking arround. I had over 600 lbs recently. I cashed it in because the prices are up right now.

Yes I definitely did do it the hard way but the whole time I had the headphones in listening to some awesome music I had the beers running freely nice and cold and it was a good little workout and the end result was pretty good. I’m happy with the way it all worked out at the end of the day👊🏻😁

huh? Of course motors that big and even bigger still exist! In fact, this one was approaching the size that they will often get rewound if they fail.
This isn't even a big motor-maybe 250 HP. I'm a motor winder and these are at the small end of motors I do. It was sad to see such pretty windings get torn up.

The roar of the furnace, the sheen of liquid metal, the cooling sound of the ice, all these things have a special meaning for me. Thank you for what you do, congrats on the milestone, and wishing you and yours all the best. On a side note, my new job has me dealing with steel all day, so seeing 60 pounds of finished product and imagining moving it inside is something I know a lot about.

If you ever take on a beast like this again, try cutting out front "crown", one where blue leads were and burning stator with your flamethrowers. Varnish and paper burn out and copper should come out very easily from the back. Should work on smaller motors too,down to about 3kW.

Yeah part of my job I do everyday is overhauling huge motors like this to extract all the copper. Cutting off the crown and throwing the stators into a fire pit and just letting them burn is definitely the way to go. One everything burns off of the copper, the copper will just slide out of the stator pretty easily

@@kransurfing not really. that thing would go into a shredder and be separated after the fact on the other side in bits. Maybe in india or somewhere the labour is cheap but not a professional recycler.
That trick where you put bolts inside where you were chiseling the housing apart was crucial. Don't want that to spring back and bite your fingers off!

This brought back memories. I had a friend that used to collect broken Electric motors and his yard was filled with them and other junk. He got me to clean his yard and gave me the motors for doing it. I got over 50 motors and broke them all down with just a hammer and chisel. It took me nearly a year to break them all down. lol

Actually it's just a bar that still needs to be refined and recycled appropriately. No metal refiner or processor would buy this stuff at full value.

You don't realize how primitive the electric motor is - until you take apart one of this size! Practically pre-historic in shape and proportion. A great melt-down job - as usual! Thanks for the ride-along!

Автор, спасибо за интересное видео! Несколько замечаний (от человека, который в СССР, будучи ребенком, сдавал медь в 1993-1995 г., и даже купил себе на вырученные деньги мотоцикл): 1. При обрезке медного провода болгаркой (AEG) , вы теряете много меди (copper dust - это лишь малая часть что вы компенсировали от потерь ). 2. Достаточно острым (или заточенным) зубилом сбить (срезать) одну из "корон" кабеля мотора (при этом пыли и потерь меди почти не будет). 3. Потом с другой стороны мотора, с помощью монтировки или домкрата, вытягиваем "П" образные фрагменты медной проводки (это практически 0% потери меди). Попробуйте пожалуйста этот метод. Это быстро и без потери металла.

@@user-be5pi5ot6m представь: ты ниндзя, проник на заводской склад. там куча моторов, но тебе не обязательно (и не возможно) выносить их на горбу...для ценного достаточно рюкзака. Какими были вводные условия, такими и варианты решения. Тут автору просто по кайфу кромсать моторы. Вводные немного другие 😀

Мы тоже также делали. В мет комбинате нерабочие двигатели разбирали на медь 90+ года,зубило, молоток и монтировкой норм так можно разобрать на перекуре) только текстолит трудно было выбивать из канавок, потом собирали корпуса движков обратно и как бы ничего не случилось на место ставили, всё равно их потом пускали в печь на плавку. Бывало вагонами даже привозили таких движков на металлолом.

I'm lucky enough to work for BHP's Olympic Dam copper mine in SA. One of the most satisfying things to watch is the copper being cast into anodes ready to undergo electro-refining. It's a shame you had to demolish that motor casing to get the stator out. They make fantastic wood stoves for the cold rainy season here in Aus.

The consistency of thickness on those ingots, Very impressive. Could feel the flow... pours kept getting more consistent, Most of those were almost identical.
Why were you making them so small? Not that I am judging, but you have a lot of metal to do, why not do multiple larger ingots to go through what you melted faster? Is it just a preference because it melts faster than it freezes?
@@kevinclarke8795 The mold was getting too hot. I’m assuming he only has one. It doesn’t melt faster than it freezes but while it’s freezing in the mold it’s also freezing in the crucible.
