HOW TO MIRROR FINISH A BAR
I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

In my childhood we were looking for broken car batteries and smelt them for lead knuckles. If only one gave us an idea to smelt it to ingots and sell. We would have unlimited ice-cream then🤣

Everytime I see you meticulously clean the dust of the cut pieces, I remember why I love you so much, you have no idea how incredibly refreshing it is to see someone not waste like half the materials they are using and actually do their best to leave no waste
@@ryanbailey3176 yeah plus there is copper in that dust that can be refined later into actual copper, even if its only a small amount of copper it adds up
Usually when I watch casting videos I think to myself "man don't they lose so much material in the slag?" It's kind of wild to watch such pure copper get melted and there be practically no impurities, it really changed my perspective!
Electric cables has very low percentage of impurities. Usually it's over 99.9% copper in it. That's why there bars have so little slag. And yes, seeing their casting it's beautiful

I didn't know a wire like that existed, so I looked it up with a quick web search. This five-conductor cable may have been used for powering mining equipment or other heavy industrial machinery, using a three-phase power system with both a neutral and a ground. Seems like this is a pretty standard type, several companies offer info pages for similar cables on their websites.

It looks like either a 120 or 150mm^2 'four-core-and-earth' cable, and they are used for running 3-phase stuff like you said, or to run a large array of single-phase loads on one cable. If you keep going bigger the cores will become their own separate cables before long due to size and weight (I'd say this is near the limits of a 4C+E cable). The mains cables that supply buildings have gone up to 300 or 400mm in my experience and they definitely go a lot bigger than that.
Stuff like this runs shovels and draglines. Pulling it by hand sucks and large enough sections of it has to be dragged by pickups or support equipment. When it fails it usually blows up. Like molten copper spraying is all directions. If We've got thousands of feet of this stuff all over the mine site and lots of it that is waiting to be repaired or hauled off.
Soo many cables just like that run up 3 separate electrical runs in the bow tower in Calgary Alberta Canada. The outer copper shielded cables with the cork insulation have a much higher temperature and fire rating the the standard steel protection with rubber insulation. It's in towers as fire systems and any other safety systems like elevator power etc...
About 9:05 you can see the sweat dripping off. That’s dedication, hanging in a 108F garage to supply a buncha folks with a half hour of entertainment. Cheers from the other side of the planet, Detroit, MI. It’s 32F right now, with snow in the forecast for the weekend.

I enjoy watching your channel, and I love that your dogs are "Ingot" and "Bullion." For future reference, you can set the "tare" weight of your container before weighing the material so you don't have to try to keep all those loose items from falling on the floor. Alternately, you can place the empty container on the scale and "zero" the scale so it will ignore the container weight when weighing.
He usually does. I think putting the copper on the scale by itself was for dramatic effect.
Or have some containers to use with the tare weight written on them. E.g. a Scrap yard here has a container with T967 on it. Meaning it weighs 967kg

I have to wonder what an archaeologist would say if they dug up your hoard there. Probably something like "We're not sure why this man hoarded all of these objects made of various metals and alloys, or why they were created. There's a possibility of some strong ritualistic purpose, as dating shows these objects were created over a span of 5 years with an almost clockwork-like punctuality suggesting a rigid 7-day schedule. Truly we can say this was a man of some importance, as the resources and effort required to create these objects - many of which are similar to artifacts found in other cultures - would be enormous. It is not beyond reason this man was a king among his people, to hoard such a wealth of rare and valuable resources that our forebears could have used to fight the machine uprising suggests one of no small influence."
Archaeology ALWAYS goes straight to temples and religion and ritualistic things to explain anything but the most mundane of finds. Very narrow minded field to be honest.

When I was an Electrician, I remember wiring up an Applebees restaurant bar with those cables. It was SOOOO difficult. Had to bend one end, tie a rope around it, smother the cable with grease and yank it through super narrow conduit to connect with the circuits outside the building. Once I saw the cable here, I had to click. It was a flashback to hard work. 😥
I can't imagine what an applebees was doing using this wire, this is industrial wire used on huge jobs dealing with massive power demands, the biggest thing a restaurant would use would be the number 4s carrying power too and from the transformer. Been an electrician for 10 years and done everything from residential to some huge industrial jobs so Ive see a thing or 2.

Copper just has an ungodly heat capacity. The way they go straight through the block of ice and still sizzle when more ice is added is fascinating. Aluminium bars of the same size stop half way through and he can pick them up after a few seconds..... But the Nordic Gold bars are the shiniest! :P

@@chopshops He discloses it pretty regularly, so I don't think it's an issue. He does a breakdown of propane cost vs. how much he gets at the end, and what you would actually be left with in profit, if any. Occasionally at the end of the video when he shows 'the shelf' he shows an estimated value. That's one of his other great contrasts to some of the other smelting channels... he takes a little time to actually show what you end up with at the end of the day. :)

in my last project last year , someone screwed up royally and didn't check the cable sizing specs properly resulting in a flashover incident during commissioning. A total review revealed more than one system had wrongly sized cables , they were as thick as these. Result was 15km of brand new, just pulled cables had to be ripped out from all the trenches , ducts, some were buried and condemned as there was no way to take them out. Repull all cables through even longer length as they had to reroute. The lengths that could be recovered were sold as scrap for close close USD300k. Major FUBAR

what do you recon is the electrical characteristics of this cable? All i can say is 3 phase. Probably low-ish voltage (1000v? if there is such a thing). but the Amps? No clue. Looks like a bear to me :D

When you were filling the crucible for the second bar we could see your sweat pouring on to the floor and then evaporating almost immediately.

Hello bigstacksD, guess what! A few days ago I melted COPPER for the first time with my new furnace I got for Christmas and it was awesome seeing/pouring that beautiful molten copper for my first time. Now I have a nice new copper ingot, my first one!
I'm surprised it has so little insulation.The ones we use here are twice as thick for the same amount of wiring inside.It has like more than an inch of solid cast plastic around the wires covered with a steel mesh and finally protected with a thick outer shell.
Low voltage - high Amps wire … insulation can be thinner then
I srsly want to do this myself. Collecting ingots of different materials seems like the perfect hobby for me

7:44 That brought back memories from a few years ago years ago, at school it was a hot day and all these red backs fell from the veranda infront of the classrooms, since we didn't wanna get any to fall on us we had to stay in the sun, away from the shade on an 41 degree day 😂

My guess would be transmission lines or something on that scale. Something with a lot of amps to it - likely enough to make the wires hum even without being wet.
22kV underground power lines (if you dig on the street you will find similar ones)
Railway cables are a similar size to power the live rail . Enormous voltage running in them
