Woodworking: Making a Valet Stand (A FANCY clothing rack)

2024 ж. 23 Мам.

My wife asked me to build her a valet stand. Admittedly, I had no idea what this was. Apparently, it's a place to lay out your clothes for the following day so that you can prepare your outfit. It needs a place to hang a jacket and a shirt, a place for pants, a shelf for a sweater, a drawer for undergarments, and a spot for shoes. I decided to make this piece look extra fancy and built it using finger joints with my box joint jig and some decorative bent slats in the sides. The finished product is quite possibly the prettiest thing I've ever made. Check out the build video and watch as this thing comes together and then just try to keep your jaw from dropping when the finish goes on.

  • Ah it killed me watching you pull the drawer bottom out just to trim a little off. My heart was saying, “just use a hand plane!”

  • That drawer bottom should be a little undersized, anyway, to allow for a tiny bit of movement with changes in humidity. Sure, plywood doesn't move nearly as much as solid boards, but it's still going to move a little. And it looks like your wife gives excellent instructions. You made it pretty.

  • Ok I'll agree that this is an absolutely stunning piece, however, have you tried introducing your wife to the wonders of the chair? You can place all your clothes there, if you get a wooden dining room style chair you have a "hangar" back, a rail for trousers, and a whole seat bottom to place bits and pieces! Better yet, you don't need to spend hours and hours making another bit of furniture 😅😅 Ok I'd have that in my house, I'd probably never use it, but I'd display it with pride!

They remind and encourage everyone, regardless of skill to work wood, we all make mistakes, over coming and correcting them is hobby wood working. The end result is seen in the beautiful looking valet stand!

    • @@FishersShop It took several attempts at watching it before I could tolerate it and then I enjoyed it. It has its share of death and dismemberment during the WWI episodes, plus some deadly car crashes (none of them had huge explosions). For a gory story, you might read about Vladimir Kotlinsky, a WWI Russian soldier. It popped up on my WasteBook recently.
