How good was Oliver Kahn actually? #GOAT
New episode of a documentary series where I plan to present all the greatest players of all time and then give them a score so a ranking of the best players can be created. In this episode we take on Oliver Kahn who played for Bayern for most of his career, not only one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time but one of the greatest players of all time. See how Oliver Kahn ranks and just how good he actually was.

He alone lifted our rather poor national team in the finals but his stubbornness to retain the position instead of requesting a replacement due to injury also lost the final. And I'm not blaming him, without him Germany would have never gotten that far. But we have to recognise that keeping the position was a mistake and there were good options like Jens Lehmann. In the end Germany didn't deserve the title, didn't get the title and Kahn still played one hell of a cup. He hasn't possibly been talked about as much as he should have, but thats partly due to Neuer following on from him. He was similar to Scmeichel, where he often won the mind games with opposing strikers, with one-on-one situations and penalties.

Yes we might have Neuer now, but I like to believe, that just like me, Neuer watched Kahn and found him very inspirational. Kahn is a absolute Legend here in Germany, or atleast to the people I know. He is a true Titan, and could never be replaced - shame he never had a good German Team behind him. I´m pretty sure if he had the former German Team of 2010 - 2014 behind him, his Name would be way more recognized. When it came to penalty shootings against Argentina Kahn handed Jens Lehmann a paper with all the usual locations where the Argentine players usually place the ball. Lehmann was correct on every ball and stopped multiple. Probably in big part to the paper from Kahn that he took out in between the kicks

    • Correction: the note came from the goalkeeper coach, and Lehmann could not read it. He cursed "why would he (the coach) had to write it in pencil". Mad Jens guessed correctly on his own, only look at it once or twice, but the notes unsettle the Argentinean players. Accidental mind game.

But what seperated Kahn from other yelling loud-mouths was that he actually also had the skills to back up his attitude. • The interesting thing about the Neuer generation of goalkeepers is that Neuer is probably the better goalkeeper overall, but Manuel Neuer is just a goalkeeper, while Kahn was a goalkeeper AND a true leader. Personally I like Oliver Kahn more than Manuel Neuer. Neuer is obviously one of if not the best goalkeeper in the world right now (despite his age) but Kahn had many more shots to save - just from my memories. Back then the league was much closer together than it is today, Bayern didn't just dominate opponents and especially the Champions League required A level games every matchday. There was not that huge gap between very good teams and just good teams. Kahn proved often enough that he alone was the reason for many wins, while Neuer is just doing his part most of the time, he's not the one winning the matches by his performance alone anymore as Kahn did it back then. I mean of course you still have to score, but you'll always manage to score that one crucial goal. Oliver Kahn stands for an era of football that is long gone but is missed by many. That was before England sold their football to Arabs, Asians and Americans, before they sold their soul. It was before the Spanish clubs had extremely high debts, it was before teams like Kiev were just "one of many to beat", back then they were fierce competitors. And Oliver Kahn was the one who taught young goalkeepers the excitement of being a goalkeeper, the mentality aspect of being a professional football player and made goalkeeping worth watching. Neuer however, to finalize that comparison, is the guy for the stats. He has been showing absolute perfection many times but he is not as exciting and game winning as Kahn was.

That being said, when Khan was the main goal keeper, that was the most frustrating match to see especially when they were going against your favorite team. I mean damn. Ball after ball gets deflected and safe by Khan, you cant help to cheer for him after your favorite team was defeated by Germany.

Baumann(hoffenheim), trapp(frankfurt) or ortega(bielefeld) could make the national sides of competitive nations if they weren't german. It is also something not just specific to football, like german keepers in ice hockey (grubauer and the other one) and handball (thiel, fritz, wolff, bitter, ramota, quenstedt, heinevetter) are also outstanding.

A month before Euro 2004, in a friendly, he conceded 5 goals to Romania in what was one of the biggest disasters for the German national team (they only scored 1). After the game, Kahn's declaration was as blunt as one would expect from him: "They slaughtered us!" - although none of the goals was his fault.
