Throughout football history, there has only ever been one who was known as the most intimidating and fearsome goalkeepers of all time. With lightning-fast reflexes, a genuinely fearless attitude, and a commanding presence on the pitch, he had the ability to rally his squad and intimidate the toughest opponents of his era - striking fear and doubt into the hearts of even the most skilled strikers as they approached the goal.
He was truly a forced to be reckoned with - so much so that over his career, he would come to be known as Der Titan - or in English, the titan. Very few in his position have achieved as much or even come close to the level of respect his peers had for him - and his name was Oliver Kahn.
There’s a reason why in the eyes of many, Kahn was the greatest overall goalkeeper we’ve ever seen. So today, we’re gonna take look at his career story and see how he became known as the scariest goalkeeper of all time.

Who do you guys think are the top 5 goalkeepers of all time? 🤔
Casillas is definitely one of them
Casillas, Yashin, Khan, Neuer, and Idk who else
Gianluigi Buffon
Neuer Buffon casillas kahn yashin
1 Yashin 2 Buffon 3 Casillas 4 P. Schmeichel 5. Oliver Khan
He is the reason why Germany produces good goalkeepers. A whole generation looked up to him and everyone wanted to become a goalkeeper.
Germany ALWAYS had crazy goalkeepers!
When i was younger, i started to play Football and being a Goalkeeper just because of him.
there is an old tradition in germany to train goalkeepers as good as ever possible. there had been many top goalkeepers in germany before kahn. but yes, he is at least one of the best ever: if your opponent has a body like a main battle tank but moves like a cat on adrenaline, you better take care.
@Conny Faust You are right. But looking to the future it is questionable if it goes on like this. Right now there is no young german goalkeeper who can be expected to be world class anytime. Looking at the most valuable german goalkeepers right now, almost all of the 10 highest rated keepers are at least around 30 years old. The youngest somehow promising goalkeeper here is Alexander Nübel, but he also is already 26 and I don't see him becoming a world class keeper. Apart from ter Stegen, Neuer, Leno, Trapp, Nübel Germany has only a bunch of keepers on a solid Bundesliga level, nothing special at all. It will be interesting to see what happens, when Neuer, ter Stegen and Leno retire...
I love Kahn and for me he is the best GK ever, but no. Germany always has more good GK on average than the other countries.

Yes, definitely one of the all-time best goalkeepers. Fact: Kahn had a broken hand in the 2002 World Cup Final. In addition, Germany was even more unlucky as their best player - Michael Ballack - was unable to play in the final. I'm not taking anything away from Brazil. I'm just adding a few things that most people don't know.
Michael Ballack has to be the unluckiest player in modern football, was such a good player, played in excellent teams with amazing players but never actually forfilled his dream of being a european champion. Shame... He was a beasy

As a young goalkeeper at KSC, he was supposed to "hold" children's shots on goal during a charity day. For every goal scored by a child, money was to be donated to a foundation. At the end of the day, not a single euro went to the foundation, and an Oliver Kahn was very proud of his work.
Of course not a single Euro went to the charity. When he was a young goalkeeper we still had Deutsche Mark ;)

Kahn was ruthless! He was a beast on the field. He got kicked in the head while catching a ball and got knocked out. Others would have left the field with trauma. He just shook it off and continued not slowing down in the slightest! I loved this mans sportsmanship so much! He was such an idol!
Modern players would leave the field after catching the wind from the foot missing their head.
I love athletes who grit through anything. One of the reasons I love Hockey. Those players are stone cold

That sad mistake against Brazil in the WC final had them lose and he blamed himself so much that he even had depression for it. The vid focuses on the good parts, that's cool but he also had quite a few struggles. He did come back to the national team as a sub and helped the team from the bench in 2006 as a leader
Lies again? Smart Bundesliga USD SGD
he was injured in the finals but took those mistakes as his own since he laced up regardless, until then he was the sole reason germany even got to the finals,so good he still got best player of wc award
Remember him for consolating Valencia's Canizares after the Champions League final, he was a true sportsman!
He did the same with Lehmann during the penalty against Argentina
As a german, he legit was the reason I asked my mom to buy me goalie gloves when I was young. I was out with my friends daily to play with me always in the goal because I also knew I wasn't that good at kicking like some of them were. And I punched those balls away just like Kahn did. Good memories. But watching him play always gave us heart attacks when he decided to run out to the middle lane to slide into the ball.... Absolute unit and mad lad to do this.
thats awesome haha😂
The fact that this MadLad did this and his Team didn bother. God damn i miss the times when he was playing. You knew he would always pull the most drastic stunts if he needed to. Just like you said. Leaving the Goal to start a offensive with the team...thats just bad shit crazy and he still went for it. And most of the time it payed of. God damn such a legend.
At one Bundesliga match, Kahn was hit in the head by a golf ball and he continued playing after the laceration on the temple was clenched. That was just his mentality. My favorite player of all time and the reason I started playing football and being a goalie.
I cant forget this one interview with him after a match: "Weiter, weiter, immer weiter" (Keep going, keep going, always keep going) That probably is the perfect summary of his mentality. That quote is almost inspirational, because its just so true. It doesnt matter how hard something is, how much you struggle or how much pain it causes. Just keep going. As a Hamburger SV fan i couldnt stand him. Today I defintley agree that he is probably one of the best football players germany ever produced.

@@sargonsblackgrandfather2072 This is an all time 11 of the angriest players.
If you were a young GK in Germany during that time Oliver Kahn was the absolute role model for you. Of course he was a legendary GK but also his personality on the pitch and his mental strength was something to be admired. And it also helped that Ballack and him were the only world class players during one of the darkest times of German football when you were happy when Germany would beat The likes Faroe Islands etc.. Kahn and Ballack carried our national team to that WC 2002 final
Even some of his teammates feared him because if they made a mistake he would give them hell for it iirc. He was always looking for ways to improve and motivate himself. For example, if he was driving with his car to an important meeting or game, he would count every green light he drove through as some kind of victory and see it as a good omen for what was ahead of him. I think he talked quite often about motivation and such thing (when asked). I might misremember it a bit, but he also said that easy games were actually among the most difficult ones for a goalkeeper because of the risk to relax and lose focus during such games.
I remember when they showed him sitting in his goal after the wc finals against brazil, he didn‘t give a shit about the golden ball he wanted to bring the trophy home. It was so sad to see as a kid, this giant defeated after he fought so hard, head hanging and trying to keep the tears back. Pictures i will never forget. And all that „scary - crazy“ thing was just the pure passion he felt for his sport.
Dude has balls of steel.
Raymar bro in all honesty. Thanks a whole fking lot for putting out these player focused football history videos. They always make me cry in nostalgia, cuz football and it's personalities nowadays just isn't what it used to be. Glad you're here to let the youngins know what it used to be like and to see all these legends once again appreciated
Honestly, as a kid being myself borned in TOTALLY LATE 80's only Sir Barthez and Sir Kahn inspired me to play football and become a goalkeeper. I'm a CR7 fan since '07, but being a goalkeeper by heart and in field, they are the gods for me to worship 🙏🏻❤️
He's from my hometown, I walked by him once in the streets, and I can say, "Titan" is not just a nickname, he was absolutely massive and intimidating even in plain clothes. You really wouldn't want that coming towards you at full speed.
Kahn, Casillas, Buffon, Neuer, Navas, Schmeichel ABSOLUTE LEGENDS
As a brazilian myself i'm happy we won the 2002 world cup, but man, this guy deserved one so much
Kahn was terrifing to watch, I could almost feel his spit through the TV every time he yelled 😅
German goalkeepers hit different. There are revolutionizers like Kahn and Neuer completely changing the goalkeeper-game but these giants make us overlook the others, like Ter Stegen or Lehmann. Keepers in the shadows of the best, which would still be considered 10/10 in every other nation.
Don't forget Bert Trautmann. He played for man city long time ago an was very successful for that time.
The GOAT of keepers. I love Buffon but if i had to build a team I want Khan gaurding our goal. the man was a gangster on the pitch but a gentleman off the pitch.
What many people don't know, he wrote a book for motivating young people to have a vision and to set goals and pursue. It got it in my hands and used it for motivating children. His spirit, of envisioning his goal, e.g. to become goalkeeper in the Bundesliga, was so strong, his vision was so real in his mind, that it would really motivate him to put all the effort for realizing his goal. An inspiring athlete.
I've always felt that the goalie has to be a very secure and imposing pressence on the field and for that Oliver Kahn was and is my fav goalkeeper ever. The man was an absolute beast, with reflexes and grip that I have yet to witness again from somebody else. Fokin legend.
Kahn is a legend. Every away game in Germany he got ape sounds from the fans when he touched the ball and bananas thrown in the penalty box for like 20 years. They never stopped it, it was brutal. But he stayed cool (mostly) and did his thing.
Why did they throw bananas at him? Did he made a fruit comercial or something?
@@LarryHym Because people thought there was something simian about him. And by people I mean all the fans of all other clubs in Germany, me included. They never stopped making ape noises and throwing bananas on the field until he retired. Thank god he was white.
@@nuclearwinter391 simian? I would have to disagree with that. However, I would argue that his eyes are not as open as with other germans. But you are correct, thank God he is white.
@@LarryHym that's okay if you disagree. There were probably millions in the stadions and at home who thought otherwise. The sounds and the bananas for 20 years were self explanatory. He looks like Dr. Cornelius son but he never lost his cool about this (he went wild for other reasons). One time he actually ate one of the bananas they always threw in penalty box. It was awesome.
Well, it wouldnt have made a difference if he wasnt white - because being insulted as ape had an entirely different connotation in germany. Before being connected with the entire world it was literally the same as calling someone dumb ("Affenzirkus", "Sich zum Affen machen", "Was ein Affe" etc), so when it would have happened to a black guy back then it wouldnt have been about his skin colour, but about people thinking that person is stupid. Today is a different story because due to globalization we share cultural aspects of other parts of the world and it would obviously be connected with skin - but not back then. The connection just wasnt there - also because of lack of "exposure". @@nuclearwinter391

Same story with Neuer. We should have lost against France and Algeria on pure merit but Neuer just decided "Nah bro, im going to win this" and made up for the shit performance happening in front of him.
I remember him when I was a kid Khan was saving miraculous shots that no one could save. Only goalkeeper in history to win the Golden Ball. He's the greatest ever.
Raymar kan you do a video about Peter Schmeichel
My favorite goalkeeper of all time
One of the best, if not the best, ever goalkeeper to have come out of Germany. The Champions league final against Valencia in 2001 was iconic. The saves were brilliant. Other than just having agility and good vision for making saves he was also extremely athletic from the way he flung himself as he made crucial saves.
His one kryptonite was Pierluigi Collina. UCL Final 99- lost to United. WC02Q- lost 5-1 at home to England. WC final 02- lost to Brazil. Collina was refereeing all three of those major games.
I remember growing up in germany as a little kid barely knowing anything about football, knowing next to zero player names - but that name was different. Kahn was like a myth, a living legend - kinda similar to Schuhmacher in f1. One of the greatest german people alive. I knew no Ronaldo, Zidane or Figo, newer watched a football match or knew that fc bayern munich exist - but I knew his crazy eyes and bloodstained face and that he would never back down. Kinda like the war hero we never had. So yeah to us germans growing up in the 2000 he is the greatest goaly of all time (although retrospectivly seen Neuer will likely have surpassed him when ending his carrer - still he will never be the TITAN 🫡).
King Kahn had a fiercesome reputation, and though he usually just barked, he did also bite (literally), but the one you really needed to look out for was Toni Schuhmacher. That guy was a psycho. In the one game back in 86 Mexico he almost killed a striker of the French team. Just ran headlong into him like a Juggernaught and completely disregarded the ball. What I hate most about that was the fact that he never even apologised. As for best goalkeeper, he may currently not be in his best form, but Manuel Neuer is collectively praised as the best Goalkeeper Germany has ever had until now.
someone asked Chuck Norris who is he afraid of, he answered Oliver Kahn.
Kahn was a freaking titan and one of the greatest ever . I used to watch his matches just to see him shout at the players .

There was once a German commentator, I can't remember who and at which game, who said: "Even if the opponent's striker gets past this defence, he must think, damn it, here comes Oliver Kahn".
Hello! First of all, its a great video, and I also appreciate all your other work. Now some minor corrections to the story about the Karlsruhe SC (which is my hometown club and I used to be at every match at home in the time when Kahn was with us, and even before and after): the KSC played in the second division in 1986/1987 and then made it back to the Bundesliga, but Kahn was not our first choice keeper then, it was Alexander Famulla. Kahn also did not play a major role in the first seasons in the Bundesliga, but then there was one match in the 90/91 season in which we were 1:2 back after short time vs Bochum and our manager decided to bring in Kahn. He was a bit nervous at first, but then he made some good saves, and we won 3:2 in the end, one of my alltime favourites Srecko Bogdan (an AWESOME Libero, who kept us alive and in the league in the early years) scoring the winner. After that Kahn was our first choice keeper and we slowly made progress. Not wanting to take anything away from Oliver Kahns GREAT contribution to the success of the KSC, but in the time when we finally qualified for the UEFA Cup, our team was not bad at all. We had some decent defense, the - although a bit aged - workhorse Wolfgang Rolff in the defensive midfield (he was part of the EC winner team of the HSV 1983 and stopped Platini in the final in Athens!) and brilliant and fluid attacking players like Sergej Kiriakov and Rainer Krieg, Valeri Shmarov, Manfred Bender (he came from Bayern München and brought us excellent corners and free kicks, and also the winning mentality) to just name some of them. In the first season in UEFA Cup we also had a new striker named Edgar "Euro Eddy" Schmitt and I would say in the first half of the 1993/1994 season we were one of the best teams in the world when playing at home. We beat PSV Eindhoven, Valencia (7:0!) and Girondins Bordeaux with a young Zinedine Zidane... but it is true, Kahn was special, his mentality could be felt even in the top of the stands, and when he left to Bayern München, we never had the same quality in the goal again (although his successor was not bad either, just not so special like Oli). The transfers of good players from our team to Bayern was also something slowly killing the club (we lost: Sternkopf, Mehmet Scholl, Oliver Kreuzer, Oliver Kahn, Thorsten Fink and Michael Tarnat to Bayern).
I honestly believe that in his prime, oliver kahn was the best keeper that ever lived.
I am from Bavaria (Bayern) and never was a FC Bayern Munich Supporter, but as a Kid i remember someone saying: Kahn is the only player, which is feared by his teammates, the oponnent players, the coaches and even the refree 😂 Kahn was so cool and insane, we need more like him nowadays
I remember wanting to be him when we played football in the park 😂. Man scared the shit out of me and that was the reason I wanted to emulate him (also he was class). So while every other kid who got to play gk went for Buffon, there was this one little Italian boy who went for Oliver Kahn 😂
shoutout to the guy he is shouting at in the thumbnail: Fatmir Vata, a legend for my club Arminia Bielefeld, i was there that day. Great memories
can you make video on Alvaro Recoba?
my top 5:Keylor Navas (you know you have a great goalkeeper when he carries his team on a world cup tournament directly to the quarter finals , 2010 to 2014 Navas looked unstoppable ), Casias (the reason why nr 2 is cause he was one of the main reasons not just the most important one),Buffon (italy was generally great at defense thats why he is here) and Neur
Calling Kahn a legend would be way of an understatement. I have never seen a player, any player, no matter on which position, who was that dominant in everything he did. He was like a force of nature that kept balls out of his goal, strikers away from him and who pushed his teammates to do the impossible against all odds. I think the most Kahn thing I ever read about was when he took part in some charity penalty shootout with 9 year olds. It was said that they would gift some money for every goal the kids scored on him. He saved every penalty.
He is a living legend.
2002 Ballon D'or was a joke Ronaldo only scored 16 GOALS in 2002 and won the ballon dor just cuz of a world cup If khan had won that award (which he deserved) everyone would put him up with Yashin as the greatest GK ever
World Cup years usually have the strangest Ballon d’Or standards honestly, which is why Modric won in 2018 over CR7 imo
