For example, in the 58 world cup, they scored 89 goals in only 35 games (3.6 per game), compared to more recent world cups (2.6 to 2.7 goals per game in the 2014 to 2022 world cups). So getting clean sheets in that era is even more impressive.

  • Look at his childhood. To go through a war, working at a factory, worrying every day that the nazis will push through and invade Moscow, making weapons as a 12 year old. Then quitting the sport altogether due to a nervous breakdown, eventually making it to Dynamo just to warm the bench for several years. He even won the Soviet hockey league which is mindblowing considering how good they were at hockey. And despite all that, being voted as the best voted european goalkeeper 9 times, winning the Olympics and the European Championship, and eventually winning the Ballon D'or. Obviously he's the greatest goalkeeper of all time and one of the most underrated players in history.

  • There’s no doubt Yashin changed the scope of goalkeeping. Perhaps no other footballer has changed the game as much as he did. His athleticism with his diving saves, rapid reactions, sweeper keeper role, punching and quick release of the ball to launch attacks and the vocal role he played in organizing his team were all innovations now taken for granted, though few of even the best contemporary goalkeepers possess all these skills. But there was also his courage as one can witness in the many instances in this footage where one sees him diving at a striker’s feet. He was brave, intelligent and humble, a great example.

We even decided to make a 'greatest team ever' and that's when i first heard of Lev Yashin from my Dad. He spoke about Lev as if he had supernatural abilities, diving through the air totally horizontal catching a bladder with one hand (if you know what a bladder is then you'll know how tough and heavy those balls were). Lev Yashin is a legend of the beautiful game, always first on any World select team sheet, and a pioneer of modern Goalkeeping. Great video bro, it would be nice to see more videos of bygone heroes of Football. If i could suggest just one player i'd like to see a video of Garrinsha who played in the same Brazil team as the great man Pelé. • Another important fact about Lev Yashin is that he is the only goalkeeper ever to allow an Olympic Goal during a World Cup. It was in Chile 1962, against Colombia; URSS was defeating Colombia 4-1, that's when the Colombian Marcos Col executed a corner kick that went really closed, the defender let it go thinking (probably) that Lev Yashin was behind him but he wasn't. In the video you can see the recrimination from Lev Yashin to the defender. The Olympic Goal gave Colombia a second wind and they ended up tying the match 4 - 4 in an historic match for the Colombian team.

  • Undoubtedly Lev Ivanovich Yashin is the best goal keeper ever..considering the facts, old football was defenitely very tough in terms of the weight of the ball used, the bad pitches, the heavy jerseys and boots, less protective elements and the brutal tackles. It was infact the survival of the fittest to remain injury free. To be a star in that era and maintaining such a clean stats.. that too as a Goal Keeper, needs insane skills..Salutes to the Legend.

  • Lev Yashin was indeed the only goalkeeper to win the Balon D'or in the history of football, what a spectacular achievement. He made goalkeepers proud by that feat. Congrats yashin👍👍

  • I would like to add one more thing, the ball was made of leather which would soak up moisture from the grass or even rain water and become twice as heavy, thus becoming very difficult for all players to play with and especially the goalkeeper, after the 70s synthetic material was introduced which was waterproof.

  • Ivo Viktor was a Czech goalkeeper who came second in ballon d'or voting and was one of the best at his time, so he was pretty close...

  • Just watch clips of him. Within 2 minutes you will see how great and how ahead of his time he really was. Dude was amazing. Acrobatics like that bk then were unheard of. He dominated everyone while also wearing gloves equivalent to oven mitts.

  • I always want to know how good the football legends really were when there wasn't a comprehensive coverage of their career and lev yashin is one of the most important ones. I look forward to watching more videos like this

  • My father was always a big fan of Gigi Buffon and Oli Kahn. But he said that Yashin will be the greatest goalkeeper of all time! He was simply right!
