The Easiest Way To Catch Sand Fleas (Without A Sand Flea Rake)
Sand fleas make great baits for pompano, sheepshead, redfish, and black drum.
And the good news is that they're really easy to catch from the beach.
You don't need a rake to catch them, like most people think you need, all you need is your hands and a bucket lid.
In this video, I'm going to show you how to catch them, as well as:
- The best tide to catch them
- How to find them
- And more
I used these tips the other day on the beach as I was catching sand fleas to do some pompano fishing and within just a few minutes I had all of the sand fleas I needed for the day.
Have any questions about catching sand fleas?

Y’all give up shrimp and crabbing spots too?
Easiest way? Bring the kids and offer them ice cream for a bucket full.👍
Lol
i would do it ice cream or not xD
Super helpful, Man. Keeps me from buying a rake that I may use three times a year. God bless, Stay safe, Tight lines! - Hedge
Very good video on how its done..now show us how you are suppose to put them on the hook😉😁🕊🙏
Wow, absolutely great job man. I was actually able to see them with yr video for (my) first time. I can't wait to try it.
Great video, thank you for the quick tip that was new to me!
I live this video and will give it a try this weekend. Thanks for sharing.
This was my life as a kid!! Now I got kids to get the bait lol
Nice tip - so much for the rake
Thanks! I've never owned a sand flea rake. Always caught them with my hands.
That works!
Cool! Watching in the car heading up to do some beach fishin in Sarasota! Tight lines!
Awesome!
As noted below, I used to see them all the time in Jax, but almost never anymore. Is this the prime time of year to get them? My friend has a beach house where I've caught tons of pompano and whiting on shrimp. Sand fleas would absolutely kill! Great video!
man they are so cuuute 😍
Never been able to catch on west coast in gulf only on east coast. Are they around here on the beaches? Thanks for video
Thank you for this.
You're welcome!
Maybe I have not thought this all the way through, but wouldn't it be easier to put them in a strainer rather than on a lid? Then run water through the strainer. All you have left would be the sand fleas.
Exactly my thought.
I'll just use a colander 👌
I was thinking a bucket with holes drilled in it.
Is this what's biting is on the beach, cause we don't see um? Or are they really no see ums?
Wyatt, Are in NC? I haven't seen any sand fleas here in Brunswick County in yrs. Used to see them all of the time. I'm sure they are still here, I've not looked at the right time.
you just gotta find the right beach. when i went to Oregon I was suprised by how each individual beach I visited differed from each other
I will use this tommorow when i go to the beach
Keep us posted and thank you!
Best way I’ve found to collect them is to use a spaghetti strainer. You can get a ton in one go and it rinses all the sand off
Interesting thanks for sharing!
Lol, blows my mind that he didn't figure that out already
Great video. Why are the questions not being answered.
This is great! Except that I was just at Moss Landing Beach and while I did see a lot of holes, I didn't see concentrated spots like what you found. It was right at high tide though, if I'd waited an hour I might have found them. If it is this easy I don't need the rake!
Thanks for sharing!

That sand crab is so small, but I like it
All I do is look for their antennas when the water is going back then I dig one up
I live in St. Petersburg FL. Anyone know of a good spot in my area to take for sand fleas?
At 0:11 were this little patches past it sand fleas too? I’m confused on what you mean V’s???
The V’s are the shape of the antenna when they poke out of the sand after a wave comes by.
They don’t bite ?
I put Sand on my hands and I out the sand flea on top of the sand on my hand it started to bury down and it tickles my hand
A plastic garden scoop with holes in it work great.
Thanks for the tip!
That’s like a Pinterest idea..”Why didn’t I ever think of that”😃😃😃😃😃..I’m doing that. Now, I’m thinking “hmmm”, fiddler crabs or sand fleas for Sheepshead?
I’m at a beach we’re there is a ton of shells so it’s hard to tell for me
👍
Even better with one of those plastic sifters that come with sand toys
There is, without question, a huge problem with sand fleas all across the African continent; people who go barefoot (which is just about everyone) have these things burrowing into their skin, on their feet ... and it causes horrible sores and what not ..... but .... these things are big enough that, .... how can you miss them? .... idk Y they're so seemingly unavoidable all over Africa .....
have you played on a beach with them before? I have lol, best time ever. they're very sneaky little guys. I wouldn't notice they were on me until i felt a pain on my foot, and sometimes theyre under the sand and when i lift my foot there's many of em. they're scavengers, eating any organic stuff they find on the beach. so they like to nibble on our toes.
after some research I found that the jigger flea causing the disease you mentioned is also sometimes called the sand flea. jiggers are tiny and live in the soil, and many houses have dirt floors. I hope this helps
I use a d or shrimp net.
In South East Asia, we use motorcycle baskets.
That is awesome, thanks for the tip!
I thought before I spend the $75, I'd check to see what's really up with sand flies... Thanks
👍
dont sand fleas bite??
y they called sand fleas? 😂 ye these little guys like to nibble on anything organic. this includes feet. they dont usually cause too much harm, just a tiny bit of pain
It’s all about the U
You could use a shovel and put it in a container
Good tip!
Worst method ever
but lots of fun 😁
