  • I live in Los Angeles and those are what we would call Hard Shell Sand Crabs. It was almost impossible not to scoop up a handful of sand off Santa Monica Beach back in the day. I checked several times in the past 15 years and haven't been able to find any. It's really sad. I see fishing reports from the Santa Monica Pier and the Santa Monica Bay and they say they're catching fish but I never see anything. I used to catch halibut off the Santa Monica Pier but not since the 1970s I'm so jealous! There still is one great fishing spot and that's off Point Dume North of Malibu. I've caught everything and anything imaginable from there and I suppose you still can. It's one of the most beautiful spots to fish from and just to be out. You can look up Point Dume and see how beautiful it is and at the same time extremely hazardous to get to. And I surely would not eat anything caught in the Santa Monica Bay these days. You are so lucky for your fishing opportunities!

  • I took my 3 yr old daughter to the beach in FL one year and she had the best time digging in the sand after sand fleas. She got really good at catching them and loved to hold them as they tried to dig their way out of her hands. Her giggle was fun to listen to. That was 34 years ago. :o) I'm glad you tried them. Now I don't have to. LOL

He taught me how to catch them, and I'd hold them in my hand and laugh, and called them tickle bugs. That was about 30 years ago, as well. Thank you for reminding me of this memory ♥

    • Did someone say a fact...There are several creatures that may be called sand fleas: the sand fly, Tunga penetrans (the “true” sand flea or chigoes) or the arthropod from the family Talitridae. While all of these creatures are arthropods, none of them are in the same order. Sand flies are true flies which can bite. There are also Chigoes, which are parasitic fleas found in tropical areas, such as South America and Mexico, which may burrow into people’s feet. These pests could be the reason for some of the misinformation about “sand fleas” from the family Talitridae, including the misconception that sand fleas bite people. However, this article will focus solely on the sand fleas from the family Talitridae. Sand fleas are also commonly known as beach fleas, sand hoppers, or beach hoppers. Despite their common name, sand fleas are not actually fleas. In fact, they aren’t even insects. Sand fleas are very small crustaceans, in the Amphipod order. Sand fleas jump like fleas and are difficult to capture which may be how they got their common name, not because they actually bite people.

      @christianbazo6335@christianbazo63353 жыл бұрын
  • So apparently they are NOT “fleas/bugs” they’re actually crustaceans 🦞 like shrimp 🦐 crab 🦀 and lobster. They’re just small. The name is really off putting 😝

    • @@ASMRDogsWalks lol I've gotten way to much rest.... I know they are still called sand crabs to this day by some folks. I'm willing to bet though you wouldn't go to Paris island and call them a sand crab.... I'm chill though dranking some bud platinum and watching all kinds of crazy shit for a few. All is good, all is well maybe I should take my drunk ass to bed lol...

  • I've tried it once when I was a kid. My aunties fried them, and I was grossed out at first but they taste like shrimp. It's a great snack.
