  • Very different w/ an adult feral, just FYI, important for those that don’t know.💜🐱 Also generally good to be patient and let them settle and feel safe vs forcing things too fast. They learn to trust when not threatened.

  • In my experience stray cats and abandoned dogs make the best pets. Once you prove your love for them overtime, they transform into the happiest, most loyal, most well behaved animals. I have a pit who spent her life in and out of shelters, getting adopted, being dropped back off, and when I first seen her she looked so sad, and it was literally heartbreaking. She was super anxious, super clingy, and was very bothersome at first, and really she still has her days, but she turned out to be the best dog I could of ever asked for. She still gets under my skin at least once a day, but she brings a smile to my face and warmth inside from every other moment. Except when she snores, no matter how hard I try, its extremely difficult to tolerate. Thank god that its not every night.

    • My pittie was clingy and anxious too. I'm so happy when he's brave enough to do something on his own now and when he cuddles me, its for love and not because he's terrified of the world. He's also comfortable enough to eat slow now, instead of gulping down every treat and meal in a panic. Life on the street is no life for those sweet pups

    • It's so wonderful! I got a feral when he was about 2 years old, and when I had him fixed and made him into a house cat, he purposely walked an inch away from my leg and refused to touch me. One day a few months after we were cohabitating, I was lying down for a nap and he had started lying down by my lower leg, which I hated, because I have restless legs. Out of the blue, he stood up and started walking towards my face. I was scared, but he wasn't in an attack position, so I just stayed put. He put his mouth to mine. Pulled away and did that two more times while the tears were running down my face. Then he turned around and walked back to my leg. He was asking for a little more time, but telling me he liked and trusted me. He passed at 21 years old.

I put down food for her daily and a litter box which she took to right away. She slowly started emerging to explore, and came to understand she had nothing to fear. She was safe, fed, warm, and comfortable. Soon she was very playful and affectionate and no longer feral. I named her Tuesday because that's the day I found and rescued her.

  • Obviously, be very careful. Don't just take some feral kitten home. Test it for diseases, don't handle it with your bare hands, treat it like you would any other wild animal rescue at first. And probably don't try this on an older cat, they'll have too much baggage at that point.

  • I believe talking to them softly also helps. So they get used to human voices and speech, and learn to associate it with safety and happy, positive experiences. You'd be surprised how well cats understand speech! My kitty actually started doing things I was trying to encourage her to do (like coming to me when called) when I started telling her "Good girl!" I never had to give her any treats or bribe her with playtime. I just told her she was a good kitty and gave her lots of pets.

It took half a year, but they started off by running away at the slightest sound and ended up discovering that receiving pets was something they could no longer live without. You'd never believe that they used to be so scared of me They're both still very much alive and I've been feeding them throughout the whole journey. They now sit on top of me and rest their heads on my hands until I pet them. Both are glued to me.
