Real Meanings Behind 9 Strange Cat Behaviors Explained

In this video, we will talk about 9 strange things cats do and explain the meanings behind them.
Why do cats raise their butt when you pet them
Stroke a cat at the base of their tail, and they are likely to stick their butt up in the air.
The base of a cat’s tail is an erogenous zone with lots of nerve endings. So many cats enjoy being pet or scratched by a trusted person in this region.
Interestingly enough, cats also adopt this posture when they are in heat and ready to mate. Female cats that are in heat often become more affectionate and drop into this position every time you pet them.
Why do cats cover their faces when they sleep
More often than not, cats cover their faces while they sleep to keep their noses and bodies warmer. By covering their faces with their paws or curling up tightly into a ball, your feline friend can reduce the amount of heat that is lost as they sleep.
Cats also cover their eyes as a way to block out the light.
Why does your cat lick you and then bite you
If your cat licks then bites you out of the blue, then you might be in the presence of a love bite. Cats often bite to show affection. But only with gentle and more controlled nibbles.
Some cats bite you as part of their grooming behavior. When felines clean each other, they lick and nibble to ensure thorough hygiene, meaning it is completely normal for our cats to bite us a little when grooming us.
But remember, if you are actively petting your cat and they give your finger a lick or two, and then a nice chomp, it might be that they have had enough of your pets and are overstimulated. Overstimulation happens when you touch your cat in areas they don’t like or when you pet them for extended periods of time. After some time, something that they might have found enjoyable turns frustrating and results in a little bite. This is your cat’s warning signal to stop petting them.
Why cats keep changing their sleeping spots
A study published in Applied Animal Behavior Science surveyed 1,177 cats and found that on average cats had 5 preferred sleeping places.
It is survival instinct for cats to regularly change their sleeping location. Cats in the wild frequently move their nests and colonies to avoid detection from predators.
Cats also sleep in different locations to enjoy privacy, regulate their body temperature, and to avoid stressful experiences. Many cats prefer sleeping far enough from litter and food to avoid strong or direct smells.
Why some cats over-vocalize
If you have got a cat that over-vocalizes, there are several reasons for it.
The most common cause of excessive vocalization is attention-seeking. Many cats learn to meow to signal their wish to go outside, be fed, initiate play, or even get you to talk to them.
Cats that are experiencing stress also become more vocal. A new pet or baby, a house move or big changes to the home, an illness or the loss of a loved one, can turn your cat into a talker.
Other reasons for a cat’s over-vocalization are boredom, loneliness, and separation anxiety.
Why cats take your spot
Cats often steal your seat because they enjoy the scent and warmth you leave behind. Cats love warm temperatures and want to absorb your body heat. Domestic cats also enjoy being close to their owners’ scent because it makes them feel safe and comfortable.
Why cats knead
More often than not, cats knead when they are feeling happy and safe. You may also notice they purr and have their eyes half-closed, which are often other signs of feeling safe and content.
Another reason why cats knead on random surfaces is to mark their territory.
Why your cat sleeps with you
Cats sleep with you for several reasons.
Cats like warmer temperatures than humans do. So when the ambient temperature is a little cool, your cat is going to look for a nice warm area to maintain their temperature, and your body is good source of heat.
Another reason your cat sleeps with you is because she wants to feel safe. In the wild, laying down or sleeping makes animals more vulnerable to predators. Sleeping on top of a trusted human gives a cat a sense of security, as well as comfort and warmth to sleep peacefully.
Cats also sleep with you to show you affection and love. While cats can be very independent, they do miss you when you are gone from home for a long period of time and will want to cuddle with you when you get back.
Dilated Eyes
Cats’ pupils fluctuate in size and shape based on light and emotion. By dilating their pupils, cats allow even tiny amounts of light into their eyes so they can see better in the dark. During the day, cats contract their pupils depending on how bright it is.
Interestingly enough, pupil size can also be an indication of your pet's mood.
Your cat could be stressed, anxious, excited or in fear. Cats also often have dilated pupils during their heat cycle.
In situations that produce enjoyment, like when they’ve just eaten their favorite food, a cat’s pupils may dilate as a reflex.

  • Some cats can be protective of their owners. When I lived alone I had a small female cat that would sleep on my bed, but always snuggled beside me. One night she sat right on top of me all night and was awake. I couldn't figure it out. I got up to see if she wanted food and she didn't, went back to bed and she continued sitting on top of me all night, awake. It turned out we'd had a prowler trying to get into the house and I believe she sat on me to protect me and kept vigil all night long. There were large men's footsteps in the flower garden all around the perimeter of the house, so it appears he had been trying each window. He had also smashed a terracotta pot by putting his foot on it, for leverage as it appeared he was trying to open the ranchslider in the lounge (sliding doors) from the top somehow. This was the only night of my cats 15 years of life, that she ever sat on me like that while I slept.

  • I used to have a cat, and he would always give me the affectionate "love bite." I noticed that he would intentionally bite me with the back of his mouth, where he didn't have teeth so as to not hurt me. He would also vocalize when he wanted me to check out whatever he was looking at out the window, usually a bird or squirrel. One time, I heard him making a vocalization I had never heard before, it was something in between a growl, a yowl, and a meow. I went to check on him, but he was just lounging around, so I walked back. Then he started making that same strange noise again, and that's when I noticed he was sitting behind a running fan, so he was making different vocalizations into it because it made his voice sound robotic, exactly like a child would do.

  • Thank you for a great video! When my aunt's cat had kittens on July 4th, 2005, she had 3 white kittens & 1 black one. Both my boyfriend (at the time) and I immediately knew we wanted the black one. So I told my cousin that we'd like to meet them but already had our hearts set on the black one. My cousin told me "the black kitten is kinda sped, she doesn't meow or play much with the other kittens"... Fast forward to us bringing her home, and I swear she meowed for 2 weeks straight! We named her Marley & realized very quickly that she was an absolute sweetheart that had only been acting that way because of the environment she had been in. (That's a whole nother long story, but basically she had been kept in a small room with 7 other cats before we brought her home.) Marley ended up being one of the very best things to ever happen to me. She gave me nearly 18 years of the purest love, the bestest hugs & snuggles, the loudest purrs, and so much fun! She just passed away 2 weeks ago 😔 Marley was impossibly sweet, and by far the most loving little angel. I miss her. I miss hearing the sweetest meows & loudest purrs. I miss getting the most special hugs & the bestest snuggles every day. I just miss my girl.

  • I have 3 cats. The oldest (9 yrs female) is really shy, only likes our family, enjoys belly pets, never bites and she really talks w us, whether she wants food or affection she "explains" that easily. Second cat (6 yrs), is extremely fearful of outside world and not interested even looking out of windows, likes to pet but not on belly and likes to bite sometimes. We found her on the street pregnant, she had 4 babies that was with her (and us)almost a year before adoption and she is so grateful, you can see it from her behaviour. Third cat (3 yrs) is male used to be feral cat that I found in the middle of night, following me home so I took him. He was so crazy at the start, we were all afraid of him cause he was unpredictable. Now he is domestic cat, really nice, just needed some love. They are all sterilised and as we have a dog they all learn to come when we call their name, they can go out on the leash also. We found them on the streets, tried to find owners for months but was abandoned obviously, they all have chip now and we love them so much, our dog is happy to have them also. Cats are so magical and I would never live without them anymore 😊

  • One of the most accurately done cat behavior videos I've seen. As a tip for cat biting, if play gets a little too aggressive, which it often will, and a bite legitimately hurts, just say ow firmly and stop playing. This is what cats do with each other. If it's too aggressive they make a pain noise and play stops. It teaches them the limits of play vs real fighting. Play can begin again fairly quickly or the cat may want a break. But this will teach your cat your limits with play biting.

    @mycroft16@mycroft16 Жыл бұрын
    • I do this with my cat. If my Ow comes off too painful, she starts licking me 🥰

      @mariab3642@mariab3642 Жыл бұрын
    • @@mariab3642 That's also a thing cats do with each other. When a cat bites too hard and the other one yowls in pain and runs away, the biting cat grooms the area as an apology. The great part about that is that this means your cats understand when you follow them and pet them a bunch as an apology after you step on their paws or tail. They know you're saying sorry.

  • I believe that some cats might sleep with you in attempts to make *you* feel safe and comfortable. When I was little, a family cat named Buddy was staying with my dad for a long extended time, and when I stayed over Buddy would sleep with me every single night. He’d come into my room and lay on my neck, wrapping himself around my head, purring away. He was the biggest sweetheart and lovebug of a cat I have ever met. Note: Inzide dah felines, when dah hydrogen atoms are clipped off the fatty acid they are waiting for oxygen to be converted to H²O during that okay? Yah, the pH level is getting more acidic. The biggest problem within deez furry tings bodies is that the enzymes for converting fatty acids into CO² and H²O in the mitochondria are zlowing down when internal environment is getting more acidic. This has been recorded a few decades ago when the research about mitochondrial function all ztarted, yah. A study of a guy from a Skandinavien university iz highlighting that detail about taurin and the pH buffering function in the mitochondria. 2. There is also a pH buffering agent occurring in we peoples, outside of the mitochondria, but still inside the cell.....the beta-alanine boosts the intracellular pH buffer carnosine. 3. In cats blood, there is bicarbonate that keeps blood slightly in the alkaline range, thereby supplementing the zodium bicarbonate delivers the bicarbonate for that. So, to be the superman of fat burning during endurance exercising (which most felines lack), it is a good idea to close the chain to keep the mitochondrial fat burning at optimal speed by supplementing sodium bicarbonate + beta-alanine + taurin.

After being home every night for months and months with him, I went camping, for one night. Today he is a big chunky happy cat and I am mentally and physically so much better than I ever was. Cats can change your life and make you a better human being. His siblings used to bully him and he could barely get any food from them. So my dad decided to bring him home. He got used to living indoors literaly in a week or two. Somehow he has literally never done anything wrong. He got used to us so quickly. Withing a month he learned to communicate with us and point out little cat issues he seen (aka I ate all the food and I shat so much in my box it needs a cleaning again) jokes aside everytime we would put something where it usually doesn't belong he would meow until we put it back where it should be for some reason.. Also he is extremely jealous of our turtles and everytime we approach them he gets angry because he is not the only one getting the attention. Also he is afraid of other cats and everytime there is a cat outside he panics and hides. I could write a lot more about him but I gotta go

    • Ours never used to be chatty until her younger brother of 7 years died. Now she's really noisy and like to carry a bear around whilst meowing loudly. If you open the door she gets embarrased and drops the bear pretending she's never seen it before.

    • I'm happy for you both! Adult cats almost never meow at one another. It's kitten vocalization, a way to get attention from mom when hungry or scared or lost. Meowing is for our benefit, since we assume a caretaker role and don't respond as readily to body language.

It snowed back in April, I went out the door & fell on the ice, he immediately ran to me, my husband came & helped me up. But my cat climbed into bed with me, he was licking me, head butting me. I spent several days in bed, he never left my side. He would only get up to eat &.go to bathroom. He knew I was hurt, his love & loyalty was stronger than most humans show. He usually stays outside, but nothing was gonna keep him away from me. My husband actually tried to pick him up to get into bed, he growled at him. He had to sleep in our extra room. • I adopted an older cat that came from a neglectful home. For the first several years that I had her, she would come sit on my lap and purr like crazy while I pet her. Then, she would suddenly bite me and run away. She had trust issues, she was anxious, and had a terrible stress rash on her stomach most of the time. After those first few years, when she learned to trust us, all of those behavior stopped, and the rash went away. We were very patient and gentle with her at all times. We did not get angry when she bit because we knew she was just filled with anxiety. Toward the end of her life she trusted us completely. We could bathe her, clip her nails, clean her ears, hold her like a baby, whatever. Your cat may never get to be that trusting, or like that much attention, but be patient with them. You don't know why they're anxious, but just be gentle and treat them with respect.

She’d lurk around her food area, run into the kitchen whenever I would and meow NON-STOP. It was driving me nuts until one day in Petco, I realized I had bought the wrong Science Diet food the last time i was there. If you’re familiar with Science Diet, you know they have A LOT OF different formulations! I felt so bad. She was trying to tell me but I would’ve never figured it out unless I just happened to be in the store looking at the different foods and realized I hadn’t bought her the option for senior/indoor cats age 11 and up. Oh well lesson learned. Pay attention to your cat’s changed behavior.

I could never just rip out a line of them like she could, but a few k's off the back of my tongue, with my mouth open, as fast as I could would be enough to get her started. We'd have a short conversation like that, back and forth. So funny! And she never seemed stressed, or anything negative, really. She'd just have her little 'k' conversation, until she got satisfied (or bored) and rolled back over in a different napping position. Or walked away, regally. Having made her point.... 🤣

  • 6:32 I've read that cats also knead when they are separated from their parents too early, due to death, or just by giving the kitty to another person when they're too young (a few weeks before born). That happens because the kitten didn't have time enough to knead its mother when young, so when the cat grows up, that good feeling of kneading its mother keeps in their memory, and they keep doing that even when they're adults. I live in Japan, and here, the law only allows people to sell a kitten after being 2 months with its parents (and brothers and sisters if born together), so they won't feel that lonely after being taken to a new home. (some breeders usually prefer to keep a little longer (like 3 to 4 months) to be sure that that kitten is also free of some kind of health issues) Due to that, it's hard to see cats kneading if you bought them from dedicated breeders.

    @suikun245@suikun245 Жыл бұрын
    • I've had cats knead regardless of age they were separated from mother. They just mimic childlike behaviour when they're feeling safe and comfortable. If they also nibble or suck on things like rugs or quilts while doing it then it may be a sign of early separation from momma cat.

  • My family always used to go to the mountains during Easter. Our cat would be fed and taken care of by a neighbour, who had other cats, and who was well acquainted with him and very nice. Every single time we got home, he'd had heard the specific sound of the car engine far away - lived in a valley - and gone to his "overlook" place. Then when the car pulled up the driveway, he'd come running down. Meowing and craving tons of cuddles and affection, then leading the way back up the path to our house. He was well taken care of while we were gone, however he'd always be so, so happy to see us when we got back. This is just the tip of the iceberg, but the point is that there's not a shadow of doubt anywhere in my mind that he loved us, and we loved him back.

Both come to cuddle with me every day, and at least once a week, our boy will come running to my room while yelling and just DIVE into my lap expecting pets. He is very, very insistent. He has this spot right at the base of his ear that he's crazy for having scratched. It makes him sound like an engine. His entire right ear, indeed, he just loves for me to touch. Scratching, petting, even lightly pulling on it. He goes nuts over it! He's such a precious boy. God, do I love him.

    • The females in your house can eventually help her to enjoy their pets. Start with giving her a treat every time the female sees her. If not already doing it, the female should be the one to feed the cat. When the cat is close by, don’t make a fuss, just stay still. The cat will start to see female as safe and approach out of curiosity. Read/watch videos from Jackson Galaxy to learn specifics. Good luck!

My next door neighbor (unbothered by it) even commented about Kitty's heat singing, how it would resonate through the immediate neighborhood! (She did have the spay, at about 1-1/2 years.) Her in-heat singing inspired an idea anyone with the unfixed cat, the equipment, and know-how is welcome to do: Record that mating song; run it through AutoTune (I'm told at full, even casual speech sounds sung), then add some Barry White-worthy background music!

She loves attention but as soon as she's had enough she'll give a little nip to say, "Okay, that's enough." Then just sit on you for the company. This cat has also been blind since birth so she has no subtle body language so when she's had enough she goes right for the most obvious, "Knock it off." Signal. She's a good girl.

  • Great video...covered pretty much everything in terms of the "why?" question. Got nervous on the first one when I thought it was stopping at- cats lift their sensitive butts to get a little butt-play from their ape-like companions (or something like that). I personally never read into it that way w/ my cats...and wont be any time soon. From personal experience, which actually means sh!t as I am personally not a cat, but barring it's not in heat, it's giving you the opportunity to get your face up in there, the premium location for a good whiff...IF trusted. I notice when my inside/outside cat comes inside, that my other (only inside) cats go in for a whiff.....the two she tolerates she offers them her ear to smell, the other two that pick on her get her paw and a hiss at their attempt to smell her and to her favorite one she offers up her ear *AND* butt to, and as far as I've seen therhas been zero butt-play, just some sniffs from her trusted "bestie"- like the other cats do to her ear. So, with the exception of being in heat, offering their butt like is a kind of handshake in the cat world I presume . ^^🌘🫲 edit: ...and yes, I have too many fu*k!ng cats!! ....yeah, as well as too much time on my hands.

  • I'm convinced I taught my kitten how to kiss. Ever since he was weeks old I have been giving him non stop kisses all over his face. Now, he will climb on me and press his nose all over my face and kind of move his mouth around and purr. He's not rubbing his face on me like other cats do. I swear he's trying to give kisses!
