  • My vet refuses to declaw. If someone asks about declawing, she explains why it's a very bad idea. If they insist, she tells them to go elsewhere. She'd rather lose the business than declaw a cat.

  • I adopted a senior cat who showed clear signs of severe abuse and had been previously declawed. I was warned that he would be cold (he had been bounced from home to home for years), but he clung to me from day one and became my best friend. He had bad arthritis from the declawing, but he was still active, gentle, and loving despite it all. He passed in 2020, and I hope that he's sharpening his claws, chewing on crinkly plastic, and getting endless belly pats wherever he is.

  • When I decided to get two kittens, my mom was opposed to the idea of me installing several shelves for them to walk on and buying a lot of toys. She was like: "Okay, but you don't wanna buy _too_ many toys for them or install too many shelves and cat trees. Remember that it's your house, not theirs." I was honestly too dumbfounded to speak. That's like saying: "I wanna get a dog, but not walk too much, because it doesn't fit in my routine." It's not a luxury for them, it's basic needs 😂 From the moment you get a pet, it's _our_ house, not _mine._

  • I have to admit, many years ago I was too slow when it came to cleaning my cat's litter. Then I adopted a cat who was pretty smart. If her litter needed cleaning, she would drag one of my favourite shirts over to her litterbox and covered the box with my shirt. Every time she did this, when I saw what the condition of the box was, I apologized to the cat and cleaned it right away. Eventually, I kept on top of the situation and she didn't have to cover the box with my shirt. It only took a little while to train me.

    • When I moved in with my boyfriend, I had 2 cats, he had 1 & his disabled mom that lived with him had 1. Their girl kitties wouldn't let my girl, Snickers, down the hall to the litter boxes, so she peed on our bed, several times. We finally got the message & have had a litter box in our bedroom since just for her (all 4 use it now, she doesn't mind). We cleaned the bed really well & no pee issues since. We also got her checked out by the vet who said she was healthy & she needed a litter box in the bedroom (bf didn't want one in our bedroom, I didn't care, I've had a litter box either in my bedroom or attached bathroom since I got her, it's no biggie to me). All kitties are fixed & indoor only too. They are all good at training us & they're freaking adorable, especially Snickers. She's still skittish & stays in the bedroom a lot, we're working on getting her out more, we have the cat calming plug in things throughout the apt, they help some. Her sisters can be catholes though. She's fine with her brother (my other kitty I brought up here).

    • Where I live, 90% of landlords don't allow cats at all, and all the rest require declawing. It's either declaw, abandon your cat, or be homeless. Not everyone can afford to own a home. Even if you rent, you pay more for the joy of having a pet. Hundreds in un-refundable pet deposits and usually extra rent.

      @ShadoeLandman@ShadoeLandman2 жыл бұрын
    • @@ShadoeLandman Where do you live? Cat lovers might like to know so that they can be forewarned not to move there. I've been a renter, home owner, and then landlady. I've got lots of my own cats and even have allowed one renter to keep a dog. When housing is in high demand, the landlords can call the shots. So their anti-pet attitudes will prevail. Yet in general, people are more messy and destructive to rented property than animals.

I have trichotillomania and pulled out my cats’ whiskers until we got a second one. the first one “didn’t care” as much as the second one. our second kitty was truly traumatized from it. I stopped immediately once I noticed how much it bothered him, and sometimes now I will cry thinking about how I did such a cruel thing to them. he didn’t trust me for a few years after that. but slowly, I built up his trust again. and now we are inseparable and I am so grateful. he sleeps in my arms, begs me to pick him up to hold him for 5 minutes, cries outside the bathroom door, sleeps on my lap when I’m at my desk, etc etc. I love him very much and I’m sure he loves me too. he actually LOVES his whiskers being pet! definitely learn from the past and do better in the future.

It took almost 5 years for my cat, Stella, to be on my lap alone. She bonded to the cat we had at the time, who was 10 when she was just a couple of months old. She was always wherever he was. He passed in June and now we have a kitten for her to play with. It's a slow road, but I know she will be happier with company when I go out rather than being alone. I tried desperately to talk her out of it; explaining what it would do to him, begging, pleading, condemning, all to no avail. When the day drew near and every effort had failed, I resorted to sending her shockingly graphic photos with an article written by a veterinarian, condemning the practice. That finally got through to her, thanks be to God! She's since gone into long term care and he's my cat now. • @@m0zarts-animation In my case I'm lucky that the middle of our house happens to be my bedroom closet. When I first got my 2 cats (today happens to be our 12-year adoptiversary!!), I made them a bed, litter area and brought all of their toys that came with them into the closet as their "safe space" and made sure the closet door stayed open so they could start exploring the house slowly with the bedroom and still get to their safe space when they got scared or nervous. We slowly transitioned the litter and toys outside the closet door and, for the litter, to a better location once they had full run of the house. Carriers that have an easy-open top make nice beds where they can feel safe in the beginning too. It gives them a place to "hide" where you know you can have them ready to get to safety without a struggle! Good luck with your new kitty once you get it!

  • Declawing is not a mistake. It's abuse, plain and simple. Declawing limits a cat's ability to climb, defend themselves/fight, hunt, and as you pointed out above, use the litter box properly or even walk comfortably. People who declaw their cats and know these issues exist beforehand, are self-centered and think of the animal as nothing more than a toy for their entertainment.

    @Godlover614@Godlover6142 жыл бұрын
    • I haven't watched the video yet, but if Jackson really refers to declawing as a "mistake", especially if he refers to it as one even in cases where the (prospective) owner knows before making the decision to declaw that it is extremely harmful, he might be doing so to not alienate viewers who really should watch his videos. The kinds of people who'd even consider declawing a cat. But in my opinion such careful language alienates other viewers like you.

It more avaliable knowledge now, but there are some that don't know. I'm not sure what the laws are in my state for sure. I know the city I live in a cat must have a license and cannot be allowed to run free. There is no problem in the city with feral cats. There is a catch neuter release problem to help reduce the feral population.

  • Little Story: I’m working yesterday night at a club called Rodeo (I’m a bouncer). This cat comes onto the patio and everyone being drunk or loving cats is trying to put her. She didn’t let them and out of all people came straight to me. I tried to leave, not really being the cat person that I thought I was. So for about a hour she kept following me and I accepted her. I called a friend to come pick her up for me and I would get her after I got off. I gave him my card and said get food and a collar. So we stayed up until 5 this morning laying and playing on the couch. Went to sleep for a hour waiting until my local Walmart opened. Then as soon as it opened I got all “cat necessities” after watching some of your videos. So jokingly I named her “Rodeo” but she responds well to it. She has already gotten along with my dogs and I’m putting up posters soon to try to find her home. Kinda hoping nobody claims her because she has a loving home here…. But I guess I have to do the right thing.

They were handled by everyone, including us little kids, from birth and were the most laid-back, friendly cats I ever had. We were not allowed to mishandle them (parents taught us how to treat them), but they were so comfortable with us, we could walk around with them draped over our shoulders like a stole. They loved being held and pet, but they were rugged indoor/outdoor cats. Slept inside ebery night. Came and went freely during the day. Hunted various critters around our large property on the edge of town. Went to the neighbor lady's house every afternoon for a snack. Always came back around the house right before the school bus dropped us off in the afternoon. They were so great.

  • The thing about flowers is SO important. My sister was given a bouquet of some flowers that included lilies, and we knew they were dangerous for cats so we kept them in her room and kept the cats out of there for the time the flowers would be there. But they snuck in. And we caught them sniffing the flowers. One of the petals had a little bite taken out of it. We googled it and found out just how poisonous lilies are and we rushed them both to the emergency vet, where they had to get their stomachs pumped and stayed overnight. It was a really scary (and expensive!) time. Both cats were totally fine afterward, but it was extremely stressful for them and it took a few days to recover. Now we check every flower in every bouquet or gift and if there's *anything* that could pose a risk we re-gift it or throw it out in the outside trash bin. We're taking no chances.

  • It's taken me twenty-five years to fully appreciate and articulate my thoughts on the matter. I recall I recall the second two cats I took in since coming to Canada. My mother and sister wanted to get Bear and Clovis declawed because of grandma's old furniture. I argued and fought, them as if they were my cats... I inherited them from my brother. They were originally his but he failed to take them with him when he moved out. There was no plan as to who would look after who. So I more or less took over the handling and caring of these two ladies. I argued as to why. I argued over cost. My mother was willing to hear me out but my sister was immovable. I was also still in school but my sister has ways of getting my mother to do things that I wasn't able to do. So I was out at school when the deed was done, then I came home one horrible day to find that Bear and Clovis had been declawed. Needless to say, my rage was incandescent. I swore I would never forgive this crime. Bear and Clovis would suffer. My sister said "Oh, you don't know what you're talking about. They are house cats. They don't need their claws." That was when I'd run out of things to say. So I slapped her as hard as I could, across the face. She then hit me back. Needless to say. It ended badly for all concerned. Bear and Clovis's quality of life declined. They were angry, bitter cats. They didn't get along with anyone. They limped all their lives. They suffered and they were angry cats after what happened. They used to be so sweet and cuddly. But they hated everyone. It took them years just to be able to come to me for anything. Most of the time they hid in darkened corners and behind furniture. When I moved back down to the basement. The cats came with me. I made sure they would want for nothing. I ensured their every need and desire would be tended to. Bear and Clovis became my shadows... and my bed... well, I was borrowing my accommodations from them. When I went to bed every night... Both cats would curl up with me. I fed them, I watered them and I ensured their kitty boxes were clean. They had full and happy lives with me. Even after twenty years. My rage over what my sister and mother did. Still shines, as nightfall in winter that comes with only a single star. Just thinking about it, makes my blood boil. I don't think I'll ever get over it. They didn't even have the balls to look me in the eye either. They waited until I wasn't there to protect them.

We have a 10 year old cat that was rescued by my daughter (it was a friend's cat) she thought it was kitten as so small but was actually 12-18mths. Peanut had been underfed and everytime it went to litter tray child in house use to pick up and shake it in litterbox. My daughter thankfully removed it from the situation.. Peanut was freaked took 6 mths for it to be in same room as us would not use litter tray despite as having multi litter trays and different litters to try nope would pee and poo on floor beside it. Slowly trust developed but took 3 years when suddenly she leapt onto my husbands knee for a head butt and has been his shadow since.. She will seek attention out now but does compared to our other cats like her own space will only come on her terms.. Toileting still a issue will never use litter tray and I can understand that we have got acceptable solution we put puppy training pad on hard floor near litter tray and she will use it acceptable to Peanut and easy clean for us. It is about compromise Peanut is, a loving cat with issues but show me a human without issues. Your fur baby has had a hard time will love, patience it will come to you in its own time. I am glad it has new guardian that understands. I hope you have a long and happy life like we have had with ours. • Well, she’s been through a lot. She may have been at her previous home or at the shelter for 4 months, 6 months, a year, and then suddenly everything went away, and then again if she got used to her space, everything went away again. She’s had at minimum 4 traumatic transitions in her life, so you must be patient. Give her lots of options to sit and lay, and make sure that from wherever she is she can easily see the whole room and easily hide when threatened. You have to remember that hiding is literally her only defense, she has no other way to survive if taken by surprise. I imagine this must be constant terror, knowing that if a coyote or a kid snatches you up you’ve got zero means for fighting back. She never learned to trust anyone, and she’s never had a safe space to call her own. I’d get a few stuffed animals and sleep with them every night, then give her one. Wherever she’s hiding, make her a little spot in there, make sure she’s got a quiet safe place where no one can get to her, if she likes heights this will be easiest, but I imagine she’ll have difficulty climbing with no claws. Get her one of those self grooming tools, that cats can rub up on, so she can maybe get an itch if she has one. Think about where you position everything, get some of the little enclosed kitty beds, abd some open ones. imagine that she’s going to be in there, and she needs to know she has options, and she needs to see what’s coming. This is important with the food bowl and the water bowl, which should be in different places, minimum several feet apart, but also make the dish in a position where when she uses it her back is to a wall, and in front of her she can see all entry points. Same with litter box, put different ones all over the house and make it a defensible position. You may want to consider feliway it’s a synthetic hormone that calms cats bc it’s the thing they are rubbing on stuff with their face, so they recognize it. Also I’m pretty sure Sherpa and extremely soft blankets help. But most of all, just giving her every possible way to find her dignity and sense of security and letting her come at her own time, you will eventually have the greatest kitty in the world. It may take a year, but I believe you can do it Oh, and I’d look into the best kitty litter too, one that’s best for her fragile paws Good luck, she’s lucky to have you!

She even pats my arm now when she wants her toy which I never in a million years thought I'd see! Also try vanilla yoghurt on your finger or tiny pieces of cooked chicken . Food & treats build trust.

In my opinion if you don't want to deal with claws, you shouldn't have a cat. Mutilating animals (declawing cats, cutting dogs' tails and ears, etc.) just so they suit what we want is abuse.

I'm so glad that we evolved from that to banning this cruel process. Now, not ony it is forbbiden, but it is punishable by law as animal abuse... Finally a bit of common sense. I'm 50, and docking tails and cropping ears haven't been legal in my country unless there is a medical reason for it/ the dog have been in an accident or something, since I was a toddler. I can honestly not remember when I last saw a dog without a tail or ears. I mean, except for on youtube and videos from the US where they seem obsessed to it to their dogs. The majority of illnesses we see in pet cats can be traced back to poor nutrition over time - the most common endocrine disorder in cats these days is type 2 diabetes due to obesity (because, as you said, cats are carbohydrate intolerant!), and the most common cause of death in older cats is chronic kidney disease, which is accelerated and exacerbated by imbalanced diets.

  • I didn't know how bad declawing a cat was until I saw "My Cat From Hell" featuring a poor little cat that was front declawed and had litter box issues. We never declawed our cats when I was growing up because my mom didn't believe in it. She always said it took away their main means of defense. Looking back, I'm glad she said NO to declawing. She taught me a valuable lesson, one that was emphasized after I saw that poor little cat on "My Cat from Hell". In 2018, my province of Nova Scotia became the first province in Canada to completely ban declawing and later on, made it illegal for all veterinarians and laymen to do it for cosmetic purposes. In fact, all cosmetic surgeries on dogs, cats, and other animals were outlawed here. The only time a vet can perform a declaw is if it is medically necessary for the cat - like the toe is injured beyond repair and would be too painful for the cat to keep for example. I'm extremely proud of my province and glad to see that no more cats will have their toes amputated. Being sick isn't an excuse either... If you're too sick to have a clawed cat, you are too sick to care for said cat.

However, with a whole of love and some training he became a devoted and protective member of our family who loved our kids and eventually our grandchild, even if he still hated strangers up until the day he died. Sounds like your cat is already on the road to recovery if he's bonding with you enough to have separation anxiety, He's come to view you as safety and comfort. I hope the poor little guy soon has more restful sleeps. Good luck.

    • I understand the separation anxiety part! I adopted my older cat when he was about 2 years old (he's nearly 11 now) and he has always had separation anxiety. It is....better....now that we have 2 other cats to distract him and keep him company, but it is not uncommon for him to be in a frenzy/panic if he wakes from a nap and both my partner and I are out of the house.

    • 😿 awww, poor thing! We ended up being my baby's 4th owner due to no fault of her own. She's sweet, well behaved, and I will never understand how she went through 3 people before finding her forever home. She wouldn't even walk on, let alone sit on laps for the first year or two that we had her. It's very clear she was kicked or thrown from laps, because she was terrified of them. She also would panic if you'd pick her up. Now, after much patience and coaxing, she's a lap kitty (will wait for you to get comfy to come sit) and she's ok with being picked up, but doesn't like to be moved around while being held. We're still working on that one. It's taken years, and she's still clearly got some PTSD, but it's waning. That's over 5yrs. Kitties with PTSD just need extra time and love, and good on you for making an effort 😻

Thankfully now she knows better. Both my cat and my brother's have their claws. Mine doesn't like getting her nails trimmed, but she has plenty of cat trees and scratching posts, so I never had a problem with her clawing my furniture.

    • I was alarmed to find out declawing is legal in Washington. I just checked the ASPCA's (American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) "Position Statement" on declawing. They say they are against it for all of the reasons everyone here has cited, but in the case of a cat that cannot be adopted due to extreme behavioral issues even after all other interventions have been attempted, they would make an exception if the animal would otherwise be euthanized. That doesn't sound very common-sensical to me - ? Because I'm not sure a psychotic cat with behavioral issues is going to become more adoptable if it is then also maimed - ? But I gather they do not support attempts to legislate against declawing. I find this disappointing.

    • I'm very glad the cat came to you and got saved. Too many people don't seem to care. My mother and stepdad moved into a house on the countryside in December. After a couple of weeks, a skinny stray cat started to visit their barn. Mom immediately started to feed her, and the cat soon became more relaxed around her, but it wasn't until the first heavy snowfall that the cat decided it was time for her to move in with the new residents of the farmhouse. In early January, my mom sent me a picture of the world's grumpiest cat face just staring through the window from a snow-covered window sill. The next picture she sent me was of the same cat chilling on the couch after eating a whole bowl of cat food. Said cat now sleeps in my parents' bed and dutifully keeps the mice at bay. A friend scanned her shortly after she'd moved in and found she was chipped and registerd with the national pet database. They called her previous owner, a man from the neighboring village, who was happy to learn she was still alive almost a year after having run away. Just imagine, nobody had even cared to take her in, let alone getting her scanned in the meantime! The man gladly allowed my parents to keep her because he saw she was very happy in her new home and he didn't wanna risk for her to run away again. Cats are very aware of our ability to look after them, to the point of them actively asking for our help if they need it. For that reason, I am convinced that they are emotionally hurt when their request for help is turned down. Yes, cats DO have emotions, very much so! So, even if you cannot keep them, saving a stray cat's live is always the right thing to do. The least you can do in winter is to provide them with a bowl of water and food in a place that doesn't freeze over at night, and set up an insulated box for the cat to sleep in. Its what my late grandma always did for the strays that were too scared to come inside.

When I got home from school, not only was my cat neutered, but my dad had gotten his front paws declawed, without talking to me about it first. It's been 21 years, my cat passed away last year, and I'm STILL mad at my dad....to make it worse, he didn't want to neuter his dog, because "neutering the dog would be cruel". The dog (also now deceased) developed cancer in that area later in life, and it decreased his quality of life dramatically in his final year. we still fight.

    • Yep, I'd be mad too. Hopefully one day your Dad will admit he was wrong and apologize to you. Sadly some parents don't know how to do that. My friend's cat was his best friend growing up but because his mom had an irrational fear of looking out the kitchen window and seeing the cat dead from being hit by a car, she had his father take my friends perfectly healthy cat to be euthanized. When my friend got home from school they lied and told him his cat had been hit by a car. His father eventually told him the truth years later (It probably would've been best if he hadn't😥). It is not OK because you decided to buy a cat-incompatible couch. Or get scratched now and then. (Especially when the cat withdraws consent to be e.g. held and there is not an overriding need for the health and safety of the cat, say a house fire.) Getting scratched is almost always your fault or sometimes an accident and comes with having a cat. PS: Yes, in civilised countries declawing - like poking out eyes - is forbidden. The same may not be true for barbaric or decadent countries.

I base them liking the scent on the idea that they will seek out and smell pine needles when I take out on a leash. The pine pellets are a little harder to clean but they control odor way better. I switch to the pine when I got two new kittens that had been using pine pellets. My older cat took to them without issue. They are also way cheaper if you get the 40 pound bags that they sell at Tractor Supply. Apparently they work well for horse bedding too.
