  • I took my 4 yr old daughter to adopt a cat, I wanted the big fluffy ginger cat: but he didn’t like me. 😢 a little black cat ‘chose’ my daughter, we took him home and he’s been our best friend for 22 YEARS!!!! He’s still going ❤❤❤❤

  • I fell in love with a 15 yo cat who had been abandoned at a local vets office. Everyone I told gave me the deer-in-the-headlights look when I told them his age. He’s 16 now, and sleeps on my head every night. I know I may not have him long, but he’s been the most wonderful cat. I have been blessed. It warms my heart that he feels safe and loved in his senior years….he deserves it.

A black and white tuxedo cat came right up to me and began to jump on me, as if to say "pick me, pick me!". He looked so much like Sabrina. Well my husband and I adopted him immediately. I have never had to go to a shelter to adopt, instead, each just appeared at our doorstep over the years and was taken in, no questions asked... when the light of a new friend brightens your life, don't ask why, just accept and hold on tight.

  • I took my youngest to 'look' at kittens. She said she wanted a ginger kitten. But there was a black/white/gray tabby with a big O on her sides (the initial of our last name ). It held back & just watched, with a look of longing. Long story short we got Isis (my husband was an Egyptian), we took her home. My young daughter lost interest after about a month. But I loved her for 20 years. She filled the hole in my heart when all my children left home (separation anxiety is real folks) . When she died, I wanted to go too. But, I feel sure GOD will reunite us in heaven whenever I cross that rainbow bridge. Cats 😺 & dogs 🐕are precious companions. GOD BLESS all creatures big & small!

  • I went to the shelter to adopt a cat. I intended to get a senior cat because I wanted to save one from being euthanized. As I was walking around, I came to an orange tabby and as I approached him, he rolled over on his back and meowed at me. I took that as a sign and adopted him. They told me he was 10 yrs. old which is a lot older than I was thinking about. Cats have short enough lives as it is and it’s tough when they die. Well, I may not have that many years with him, but he’s such a nice boy that I can’t regret taking him home. 😊

    • 10 years is actually around middle aged for a house cat. If he's kept indoors, fed well with at least some wetfood daily, taken to the vet at least once a year for screenings and checkups for health, and otherwise cared for... Your cat could live for up to, or even over 20 years. ALL of our cats growing up made it to over 17 years, with numerous making it to 18, 19 & 20. Some cats can outlive even that! Highly recommend feeding a "whole prey" food (many brands offer this, just check the labels and make sure there is as little "meal" in the ingredients list as possible) for dry OR wet and doing your best to get your cat eating wet food 1-2x a day on a schedule. We feed ours a quarter of a can of cat food 3x a day, but convincing our newest cat (my adopted girl Nym) to eat wet took awhile... Some cats will only eat dry, particularly if they come from a shelter where that's all they got. That said *_wet food is far healthier for cats to eat as they require the moisture and drink water less._* I also recommend getting a filtered water fountain - they go cheap enough on Amazon, I have the Catit Pixie Fountain and all our animals love it! Only have to change the filter 1x a month and the 3packs of replacement filters are only about 8$ (Canadian) on amazon! Well worth the money. Highly recommend Jackson Galaxy here on YT (the My Cat From Hell guy) for lots of great advice and recipes for helping to extend the health and longevity of your kitty friend, if you are concerned. Especially if you think you might repeat adopting a senior cat in the future, this can really help to not only elongate but give a really great quality of life to those older kitties! *_TL;DR: Getting your cat to live near 2 decades or more, at their maximum potential, might seem hard but only requires: annual vet checkup, providing a healthy SCHEDULED diet, keeping them indoors or in a catio when outdoors & ensuring they get play so they do not get fat (just get a lure toy and play once a day until the cat lays down, doing it same time daily will create a routine to stimulate and help make kitty secure). This recipe will give the best potential chance, barring unpreventable health issues, for your cat to thrive at maximum length._*

  • Very serious thing: If a kitten comes to you with no evident mother, u may be the kitten's last chance -- the dangers they face over night, attack from predators or bigger cats or simply being cold or hungry until morning is potentially fatal. The kitten or puppy or other baby comes to you because *It is your natural responsibility to help the helpless.*

  • When my youngest was about 9, we were in a pet store. Every time we walked past the cage full of kittens, one would watch us and meow loudly, try to reach out to us. Finally we brought my husband over and showed him what was going on. We were looking to get another car at some point and decided this kitten was it. Sebastian has been such a delight to have! He’s our fluffy marshmallow and I’ve gone to the ends of the earth for him (poor guy needed PU surgery a few years back). I know one day he’ll have to leave us, but I hope he lives a very long time. We were also adopted by a stray who showed up in our yard one day. He was thin as a rail, dirty, looked a bit ragged. When I went to feed him, he’d alternate between hissing and giving me a pitiful meow. I spoke gently to him while keeping my distance and tossed him some food so he knew what I’d brought out. My oldest was watching through the kitchen window and said I wasn’t even up on the back deck before he was at the dish eating. Good sign… So I kept feeding him and he eventually began trusting us. It’s been about 3 years. He’s not the indoor type of guy, so we built him a little house to shelter him from the cold during winter. And no matter how many houses he may hit up in the neighborhood for food, he comes back here to sleep and hang out. I named him Donovan (I was listening to his music at the time) when he became friendly and I realized he was staying with us. And if we ever move, I need to figure out how to wrestle him into a carrier because he’s moving with us. He chose us for a reason, I won’t leave him behind.

I couldn't go through the long solitaire Covid isolation without cats but everyone was adopting. I wanted older cats because they are harder to rehome and I wanted 2. Finally we saw 2 bonded cats on the PAWS website. Their owner had died leaving 27 cats. I saw my two and learned that they had been at a shelter but gotten kennel stress and were fostered out but to a home that usually fostered dogs so were put in a small room and were too stressed to interact with the foster parents much. I took them and that was over 3 years ago! They helped me get through Covid and bring joy everyday! Thank you PAWS for the great work you do and thank you for Sunny and Chubby!!!

Soon after there was a few days of heavy rain and I saw the cat sitting out there again, seeking shelter from the rain. But after 3-4 days she hadn't moved, so I called my neighbour and asked if her cat was eating properly. My neighbour was relieved to hear that her cat was ok as she had not seen it for several days. She came over immediately with some food and the cat ate it like she never seen food before. But even after that the cat didn't leave my terrace... I talked with my neighbour and we figured out that the little lady didn't like there as my neighbour had two dogs and another bigger cat there aswell. I got some catfood and was told to keep feeding her and eventually she go on home. It's been 8 years and the little lady is still with me :) She simple moved out and adopted me, I had no say in the matter. And I couldn't be happier! She does almost everything all the other cats in this video do, she taps me when she wants something, sleeps in my lap or next to me in bed. She is now my little furball and I love her for it! :)

  • I went to a shelter specific for cats with the intention of getting a black kitten that I saw on their website. The adoption centre was a two level facility with the kittens on the lower level. The adoption manager was giving me a tour of the upper level when a cat jumped off a shelf and hung onto my leg. She would not let go. Her name was Kylie - a beautiful grey cat with amber eyes. Her kittens were adopted several months prior but nobody would take her because she bit visitors. I never did get to see that kitten lol. Ten years later and Kylie is my cat Queen 😂

I apologized and sat on the floor and told him if he wanted to say hi, I would respect his boundaries. He pondered for all of 30 seconds before he hopped down and crawled up onto my chest. Walked right into the carrier when it was time to go; he had no regrets. And as far as I can tell, he still doesn't. 😂❤

I've seen my little black furball in a post, her owner was moving to a military school dorm and could not take her pet with her, so it was either someone adopts the baby or she has nowhere to live. So we, the happy catparents, decided to go buy a cake to celebrate. And right outside a small local shop, stumbled upon another cat, that we could not resist. So now we have two 😂

  • I work at a shelter as a behaviorist, and I have a medical background, so all my cats have been forced on me. I foster cats too sick or injured to go up for adoption, and if they take longer than a month to recover I tend to get attached or keep them. I've also got a blind cat and a cat who's paralyzed in his hind legs who wouldn't be able to go up for regular adoption that I kept, as well. My poor derpy cst with his busted back legs was born that way, so I fostered him at 6 weeks because he was deathly ill. We took him to every vet in the county, including a university veterinary research center, and no one could figure what was wrong with him, but the consensus was that a heavy viral load had caused neurological damage. And all of my dogs were fosters with aggression or other issues that meant they'd be euthanized if they went back. So I fixed up their behavior, and now they live with me. 😊

I don’t know if I believe in a God, I don’t know who or what brought him into my life, but I care for him and he cares for me…he gives me more than I give to him. And the nights he stays in and snuggles with me is heaven. No, I didn’t have sober parents, nor many friends because of that. But my cat seems to sense this…he is always with me. Dogs are great too, when humans let us down, but a cat gives and never asks for much….they are just “there”

  • No lies were told here. When I lost my first good boy in May, I was absolutely lost. He was my therapy companion for 11 years and a very good dog - my constant shadow. Fam were not excited at the idea of bringing a new dog in to help me, so to stave that off they tried to convince me to get another cat (I had previously only had cats my whole life, before getting a puppy in 2012). They took me around to numerous rescues, shelters, adoption centers... none of the cats responded at ALL, they didn't even look up or seem the least bit interested. Then my dad and sister went to the nearby SPCA and saw a tiny 3 year old black cat with pretty green eyes and came home insisting that I go see her. She hadn't really responded to either of them, but they had both liked her, so I went to take a look. It was only a week after I had lost my bestest pal, so I was not really sure I even wanted a cat at all, I was really more humoring them... When I walked in, there were lots of cats, and plenty that immediately came over to say hi and get pats (most of those were on hold already lol). On a chair by the window was the little black cat my dad and sis had found, and when I walked over to her and offered her my hand she not only responded... she very gently took my hand with her two little paws and tugged it in to nip in that way cats do when they want to show affection, not play or hurt. Having grown up with cats, I knew what that was and meant -and was floored when she even got up to try and sit on me when I moved to an empty chair. She was being bullied, so was quickly chased off by the more assertive older black cat, but I was sold already. After petting all of the cats who would let me, and giving the little black cat one more pat and a promise to return, I went out and filled in the adoption forms. A few days later, we had returned with my back-pack carrier to pick her up. She not only remembered me, but abandoned the people trying to play with her to immediately WALK INTO THE CARRIER literally the moment I put it down open. She just walked right into it, and was so calm on the way home. I've named her Nymeria, which is good because it turns out she is quite the tiny fighter. She's been almost constantly sick since we got her, but is slowly getting better. She had a resperatory infection that would likely have been a lot on her tiny skinny body in the shelter (she must have just caught it when we went to get her as it bloomed over the next week). Then, after fighting that off for the most part, she got an inner or middle ear infection that took almost a whole month to heal! Now it seems she's got allergies... 😆😆 But I have the funds to care for her, and I have the time and space and family to help... She follows me everywhere like a tiny black shadow, and gets very cross when I go out and leave her behind. Since bringing her home on May 10th, we have also gotten me another doggo (adopted July 1st, 2.5 year old chihuahua) who she took to INSTANTLY. Turns out, she must have come from somewhere with dogs because she took to all the dogs, especially my new pup, instantly and shows not a lick of fear around them! So now, where I used to have one large white dog following me around, I have two smaller animals - a black cat and a white and black dog. We all miss my big boy, and I wish he'd gotten to meet Nym and Jupi (the chi) before he went... but I would not have had the space and need to adopt Nym and Jupi if he were still here. We really only get them for so long; cherish every moment and don't let the ending of one story stop you from beginning others. I'm sad my Number One is gone, but I'm so glad I adopted the rest of the crew. One day, when I cross the bridge myself, I'll look forward to reuniting with all of my pack. :) Love them hard, raise them well and be grateful for every moment that you get to spend with them, even when they're being troublesome, those moments will be precious in the end too.

Her previous owners had left her in the countryside and she was rambling about two weeks till she find our house. She was waiting for us at our doorstep, when we arrived. She wasn't afraid at all when i take her in my arms. I still remember tears in my eyes, it was too heartbreaking to not to cry. Then, when i was petting her for first time, I heven't know yet, that she was abandoned. The next day I found out, that somebody left her in our village and my parents decided to take her with us. We never thought seriously about adopting a cat, but we did. I definitely found best friend then. Everytime I'm crying she tries to calm me down, look at my eyes and cuddles me. However, this story of mine doesn't have a happy ending, because one day when I came homw from school, I realise that none of my Cats is in the house and I panicked, I literally searched the entire village from noon to sunset, then I found out that my Aunt gave them away to other peoples because she said the house is smelling bad, I didn't even get the chance to say goodbye because they know I wouldn't give her up for anything, I haven't forgiven nor talk to her since then, and that was more than a decade ago.

  • I lost my petite black cat Abby in 2017 at the age of 15 on January 30th. In a matter of hours, rather then days or months, her kidneys were on the rapid decline and failing on her. I still vividly remember the day I adopted her at the shelter. She was so thin and frail, her coat of fur was ragged at best, and she looked so scared of everyone who passed her by before me. But once I walked up to her cage, she rather quickly got up and started grazing the side of her head against the metal bars whilst purring softly, while I had brought my fingers in to touch her. I knew right away that she was the one, in that moment, asked one of the ladies who were working at the shelter at the time to take her out and put her in the side room for me, and it was love at first sight for sure. Abby got placed onto the cold floor below and automatically jumped up onto my lap and quickly fell asleep against my stomach while I was sitting there on the wooden bench. What an affectionate, loving soul she was, from day one of owning her, down to her last moments I had to spend with her.

Callie (now 6) was born in our garage and then moved out by her mom. She came back a year later and ran into the house when we opened the kitchen door. Onyx (now 5) was waiting for us at our vet’s office. She was found at about 2 weeks old, alone and starving outside our vet’s clinic. They loved her and fed her back to life and, when we went in to pick up Hoppy’s ashes, we somehow left with Hoppy’s ashes and a 6-week old kitten. We have 13 other stories similar to these 2, including Hoppy’s story. There’s nothing better than a cat who has chosen you.❤
