  • The 22-250 has been taking deer sized game from not long after its conception in the 1930s to now and will keep right on doing so well into the future..... You conducted your hunt under the good guidance of your Dad and did everything just fine Darlin and don't you worry about what anyone has to say here that might speak ill of how you did or the equipment that you used.... I enjoyed the video and it reminded me of my son's first hunt with me and its a very special thing! That you shared that moment with folks on the internet, was a thoughtful thing to do, but as we all know...... the internet is full of people who are much, much smarter...... and much, much more experienced....... and much, much better at the same thing than any of us in the video might be, so naturally, those folks are going to step right up and flood the comments section with "great advice"..... ;) SOOOOOO, while you're out shopping for that .458 super magnum antelope blaster, don't forget to find some of that new-fangled scent killer spray they got out there now to! Lord knows that as long as you wet yerself down with that scent-killer spray, the critters out there just automatically cannot smell your breath! TIC ;) (ya gotta love marketing)

  • I love this topic! Everyone eager to give their "Expert" advice on a topic that NO ONE will EVER agree on! Great shooting and congratulations on a great buck! I've shot antelope at under 300yds with a Weatherby 30-378 180gr Nosler Accubond putting a baseball size hole through their rib cage and they still ran. The fact that the animal runs has nothing to do with whether or not it will die. Always do what you feel is ethical and put in the practice to know your weapon and it's capabilities and forget about the crap everyone else wants to feed you! NICE WORK! I really enjoyed the footage!

    • @@stetkal nice shooting. As long as your on the plains with no trees in sight that's plenty of gun. As you get older & get used to a little kick get yourself a 257 wby mag. Pretty mild recoil & bang flop. Back to your shooting, 3 shots into a 6 inch circle looked very impressive : )

  • Thread the needle with a small caliber and they work just fine. I’ve used 22-250 for South Dakota pronghorn and they work fine. They are a light boned and skinned animal. Or you can be like my buddy and use his 300 RUM, have bad shot placement and chase a wounded antelope across the prairie with its intestines dragging the ground. It’s not what you hit them with, it’s where you hit them. Good shooting.

    • Let me start off by saying anything more than a 270 class cartridge is overkill for pronghorn. Having said that, I believe a 25 caliber 120 grain bullet up to a 280 140 grain bullet are the best choices since they are better at bucking the wind than, say, a 60 grain bullet. Best of luck on future hunts.

      @nmelkhunter1@nmelkhunter12 жыл бұрын
    • You really make yourself look stupid and like a KZhead liar groupie when you say a 300 RUM won't kill Antelop. The sure signs of a knowing nothing at all liar KZhead groupie is when starting to spout off the BS shot placement BS kills every game in the world right in its tracks. I take the complete organs + guts out of deer using a 300 Wby mag and rotten cheap lead core bullets before the Barns X bullets came popular, not once did any animals run across any ground and they died on the spot

  • Congratulations on a great hunt, and good shooting. You did well with the 22-250 but you might think about moving to a 243 or bigger. With proper bullets I am sure you will see noticeably better terminal performance on the antelope. But I have to admit, you did a fantastic job, showing restraint, picking your shot and placing your shot well. Congratulations.

    • Congratulations on your very first hunt. I hope you get to enjoy many, many more. Many of us have at one time or another, hunted using whatever we could get our hands on. I started hunting with a 1917 Enfield that originally belonged to my uncle. My dad borrowed it for me to use. It is chambered for the 30-06, was the rifle my dad started hunting big game with as a boy. It was originally a military rifle built for use in the first world war. It was approximately 65 years old when I started using it, it is presently @ 100 years old and I still have it. I have been fortunate enough to be able to use many different rifles and calibers in my lifetime and have many fond memories. I hope you can build many good memories of fine times in the outdoors hunting with family and friends, and can eventually pass the tradition down to your children. But in the meantime, I think you need a new rifle to start your new hunting life. Depending on what you hope to hunt, there are a number of standards that will serve you well. For deer/antelope size game, if you don't like recoil much, a 243 or 7mm-08 will serve you admirably. If you hope to go to bigger game like elk and moose also, a 308, 270, or 30-06 will handle your needs just fine. These are the standard, most common and proved cartridges, successfully being used for all manner of game for 50 to 100 years. They are plentiful, usually easy to get ammo for and fairly economical. Then there are many, many other calibers available for your consideration. Do a bit of research and find what suits you best. I have a 30-06 Winchester rifle I have used very happily on many hunts. I wish I had a son or someone else who enjoyed and appreciated hunting in all its aspects as much as I have. I would love to pass that rifle on to them to help them in their new adventures, to get started with a good rifle that includes a history they could maybe appreciate too. Good luck with your future, you had a fine antelope hunt there and performed as true sportsmen. I applaud you and wish you well in your future.

    • You will have to forgive me. I just noticed the video was 6 years old. I assumed it was current. I just like to try help new hunters to get started. I still hope you progressed into a great hunting life and I wish you much more in the future.

  • Nice. I got my first and only pronghorn in Idaho in 2001. It's difficult to draw here but I keep trying. I got mine with a 243 with a 95 grain Nosler Partition. I shot and it turned 360 degrees and dropped in its tracks. Some people don't believe me but I think pronghorn is one of the best meats there is. I like it better than deer or elk provided it's taken care of and cooked properly.

  • All bullets kill. Caliber does not matter. Shot placement matters. I can miss with a .25-06 just as readily as with a .22-250 regardless of bullet energy. Some animals will drop slower than others even with an accurate shot regardless of caliber. They are dead but they just don't know it yet. That Antelope was dead standing. Great accurate heart shot. The second shot was not really needed but was quicker to get the animal down. There is no such thing as clean kill. Killing is not clean regardless of caliber. I have seen a 7mm Magnum butt shot deer and the deer did not go down because of a heavier bullet and more bullet energy. The point and reality is there will be miss shots sooner or later when hunting and some folks need to get used to that fact. Great hunt and good shooting. Thanks for sharing.

    • I have shot many deer and hogs. I have never shot an animal and it just stood there even though it received a critical blow. I would consider that round not fit for hunting deer regardless of shot placement. I understand the challenge of getting an accurate shot that will kill an animal. But I do not consider killing/hunting to be a game. When you go hunting you don't shoot a caliber cause it has no kick and you think it will increase your accuracy. It's not fun to watch an animal die, to have to get up close and finish the job. I understand how an animal can twitch when it's dead. Standing is a sign of life. I would not tell anyone that dead standing is true just to convince them that that animal did not suffer. There is a harsh reality of hunting, knowing that you are causing pain to that animal. An ethical hunter recognizes that there will always be pain, but will have a goal to make the death as quick as possible. That starts with being an accurate shot and bringing the right amount of power out into the field. Respect the animal you are going to eat, give it a quick death.

    • billie bleach I have seen heart shot deer run a good ways before dropping and you want to tell me that is BS. It ain't fantasy, man. They don't all drop right away. Some do but not all. That is reality. Even archers will tell you they run a good ways before dropping. Archers don't have the luxury of follow up shots most of the time. Blackpowder muzzleloaders are another one that don't have the luxury of a followup shot most of the time.

      @rbm6184@rbm61847 жыл бұрын
    • Bennett Marcum I would have agreed with you prior to this year. I shot a deer with my .270 and it didn't even flinch. Shot five more times thinking my scope had to be off. Took at least a minute for the animal to drop. Never once reacting to any shot. After examining the deer at least four shots through the chest. Two directly through the heart. I learned that even, what I would consider perfect humane shots, don't always drop the animal immediately.

      @kgm2046@kgm20467 жыл бұрын
    • Exactly. Most of us would think a .30-30 lever rifle would take a deer down immediately when it was shot through the heart. Well it ran a good seventy to hundred yards before it dropped. I saw this happen. It is not fantasy. Yes some even stand before dropping without running. Animals are tougher than we give them credit for. Conversely I have seen large animals drop right away with small calibers. Large caliber or small caliber, high energy or low energy, the animal may or may not drop right away. Accurate shooting in critical areas is still the best bet for as fast a kill as possible but still no certainty and again caliber does not matter for those reasons already listed. Its why we call it hunting and not killing.

  • Nosler is making a 70 grain accubond in .224 caliber. It would probably be the best choice for deer/antelope class if you want to use a 22/250. You might be better off with a 243 for this sized game. They don't have much more recoil, they have more energy and there are more bullets available designed for big game to choose from. I use a 243 or 6mm which are almost identical (6mm is a touch faster) for deer antelope and they both do a great job. I've never lost anything and if they run after being hit at all, they go no farther than any other caliber I've seen. It would probably be a little better choice but each to their own. Good job and good luck in the future!

The level of 98% hunter ignorance these days about guns & ammo and modern bullets is mind boggling. I have guided hunts from the Pacific NW to brown bear and Yukon moose hunts in Alaska then to see clients pay up to $20.000 then show up for the hunt with the low budget cheap deer ammo you wonder what the person was thinking to be that stupid. This is a complaint of near all Hunting guided seeing the clients show up with wrong rifles - wrong ammo - wrong gear even when the client was either told what to bring or was sent a list of gear to bring. One problem that repeats itself is the client is warned and told you bring a rifle of a 338-win mag or larger and then the moron shows up with a deer gun 30-06 and 150 grain lead core deer ammo for a brown bear or Yukon moose hunt which puts me in danger for going to look for wounded game.

Watching the video I would have just waited as well but that adrenaline is hard to control =), as we are both inexperienced hunters. Thanks for watching.

      @stetkal@stetkal9 жыл бұрын
    • You say you are inexperienced, but your advice to Skylar in the video was: "Wait, but you make the decision." That's perfect. I don't know if you are her father, but that was amazingly great advice and so good for her. You gave her the choice and she chose to shoot. Those are the kinds of decisions that make great hunters and people.

  • im in the market for a hunting rifle but i hate recoil ,people say the 243 doesn't have much but 22-250 it's got less ,do some hungers out there can give me some help in choosing between those 2 calibre?? i only plan to hunt deer or wild pigs ,thank you God bless you all .

    @joeguzman3558@joeguzman35587 жыл бұрын
    • Joe Guzman A 243 has very light recoil, and will do a better job on deer and especially pigs. 25-250 has almost nill recoil, but is marginal on deer, and especially pigs. Go 243 and even get a heavier weight rifle. That will give you very lil recoil.

      @Kman31ca@Kman31ca6 жыл бұрын
    • +Joe Guzman, You ask a question that I would like to share some of my thoughts. If you run a ballistics test on both of the calibers you inquire about, then you will find as far as accuracy they are neck and neck to 300 yards. I'm talking about a 1/4" difference at a hundred and about 1/2" at 300. This is with a 55 gr on the 22-250, and the same bullet style of 80 gr on a 243. The 22-250 at 3600 fps, and the 243 at 3300 fps. As you see, there isn't a whole lot of difference. I shoot, 243 and 223, they both can kill deer. The focus then would be on two things for me, killing power, and meat damage. The lighter the bullet, the less meat damage. However, weight retention is necessary for penetration. The 55 gr will blow apart much quicker than an 80 gr will. Meaning, you may blow up one lung, and not both with a side shot to the ribs. Or destroy a shoulder and watch it run off on three legs. If you like to varmint hunt, or like long range shooting, then by all means, a 22-250 will do. On the other hand, if you're like me, and like to deer hunt, and have long range capability, then you may want to grow into a wildcat like the 6mm-06, which will out perform either one. But not everyone can afford one or tolerate the constant making of your own ammo. The thing I see you may want to consider, is game. If deer is all you plan to hunt with minimal varmint hunting, then go with the 243, if you haven't already. Then you can shoot heavier bullets if you want, or stay low if you want to hunt coyotes. It's an all around cartridge and can be easily bought or re-loaded from 58 gr at 3900 fps, to 105 gr. Plenty for many game species. Weight of bullet, is weight of bullet. But a 58 gr 243 will out perform a 55 gr 22-250. Again, the 243 is your best choice.

    • @@stetkal Well hey man... at least your girl wasn't using her rifle's optic to scan the terrain looking for her buck. 2019 season, one of my outings where I chose to post-up nearer to a road... (my usual spot in 5+ miles hike-in) I'm sitting there, and later in the AM this white GMC truck pulls over, two people hop out, the truck goes on, their demeanor looks sorta frantic so it made me curious. I'm sitting on my spot in a Ghillie Suit. Curious I turn my 15's over to their direction... and what do I see? The kid was pointing his rifle DEAD-ON AT ME! MAN!!! Talk about Pucker-Factor!~ I had to bark-up "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING? HE'S POINTED RIGHT AT ME!!!!!" - Hearing that, I see the rifle start to point away more behind me. Whatever, I figure Ok, phew. Musta been only 2 minutes later, "Pow!" and it hits like 20yds back and up from me. Startled me bad. I look over and they are all rejoicing with each other. Then like the next split-second later, my brain is like "Oh no... no.. don't tell me they shot a buck." So I get up from my sit and walk up the slope I was seated upon back up to the flat about 20yrds up. Sure enough, lil 2x2. Apparently as they were approaching they'd seen this little buck cross the road up ahead of them. The buck was upwind of me. If they hadn't seen it. I have no doubt in my mind that sooner or later he'd have strolled down into my FOV eventually. Turns out the shooter was also a 15yo daughter like in this vid. I took a moment to relay to the Dad the importance of having her NOT user her Rifle's Optic for scanning the terrain. Then congratulated the girl on getting her first. Now I always bring an Orange hat that I stick standing up outta my pack when it's on the ground beside me on the sit.

    • Her second and third shots were great shots. However, I think she should have used at least a .243 with a 100 grain bullet. In my experience an antelope hit with a 100-115 grain bullet in the same places this buck was hit will either run 20-30 yards or fall over on the spot. If recoil is a problem, perhaps she could practice with the 22-250 and use a 243 or slightly heavier caliber in the field.

    • Keaton Draper exactly...when she gets a GOOD shot, she drops it. But she is still very young and unexperienced...so she's all but sure to take good shots. Animals are no practice-targets...so there are two ways to go here: make sure you take good, well placed shots or make sure the animal gets wacked, even if your shot placement is a bit off...by using a decent caliber for the critter you are shooting. The second option seems to be the best for her. And I'm not talking magnum here...a good old .243 would be OK by my book. After all, I don't want to much of the meat screwed up by some 30-06 bullet...so, no my friend, I am not a magnum-addict. But I do believe in humane hunting, being it with correct shot placement or the use of a calliber with sufficient knock down power. What I don't believe in is learning to shoot at the expense of the animal you're practicing on...it's a simple matter of ethics. 200 yards isn't real close, so make goddamn sure you have the necessary power at hand....I'm not criticising the girl here, but I do find it bad sport to let an unexperienced, young female shooter have a go at a pronghorn at distances around 200 yards with a varmint load like the 22-250. You can justify this till the cows come home...fact is, it isn't right...it just isn't.
