Walking while black
Jacksonville’s enforcement of pedestrian violations raises concerns about another example of racial profiling: propub.li/2hCCBaE
After watching a viral video of a Jacksonville cop stopping a young black man for jaywalking, reporters Ben Conarck and Topher Sanders examine how “walking while black” can come at a high price. In this second piece of the Vox + ProPublica collaboration, they dig into how police citations for pedestrian violations often fall along the lines of race and poverty, and introduce us to some of the people fighting these tickets.

At 3:53, we stated the black population of Jacksonville is 30%. In fact, according to ProPublica’s latest methodology, it’s 29.4%. And at 5:26, we state there were 387 tickets given for walking in the roadway where sidewalks are provided. That number should be updated to 386.

Imagine how many people are getting angry because they got a ticket,,,, for walking.
As a non-American, jaywalking is officially the dumbest law I've ever heard of.
Why is wearing a hoodie deemed as “looking suspicious “? When the priest puts on his collar, that doesn’t look suspicious but we know many of them have committed real crimes against children.
Oh dang

Lol nice
I think wearing a cop uniform makes you look very suspicious, with all the nasty stuff cops have been doing.
I wear hoodies in 80 degree weather. A lot of the time, i regret it yes lol. But that is not a reason to stop someone.
Imagine being blind or visually impaired in a city with all those terrible pavements. Must suck.
adian Traveling while walking impaired would suck as well, imagine traveling in a wheelchair or with a walking stick, or walker in place with no pavement or destroyed pavement, or in places where you have to travel on the road. That's unnecessarily dangerous.
Nearthe2nd Sorry if I'm being a pedant but the end of your comment sounded superfluous. Is there ever a danger that's necessary?
That's your fault then, you shouldn't be blind or visually impaired in the first place. Here's a ticket for you for being selfish. By the way, you have your ID with you? - Bolen
Timothy Spence Yeah, all dangers are unnecessary, but when I said unnecessary I meant it's preventable. Not all dangers are completely preventable.
adian Pavements here in Eastern Europe are way worse.
Police: sir I am going to have arrest you for simply existing
as a black person, this is why I would never ever go to america
And people wanna talk about criminals, instead of ACTUAL police corruption.
Actually when we talk about criminals we are talking about corrupt cops, among others, since police corruption is a crime. So let's put them in the category they belong in. With other criminals.
Leonard Wolf true.
The people talking about criminals instead of police corruption on this channel are the police and family members of the corrupt police. They think they are above the law.
_Black person minding their own business_ Cops: Sorry, your skin colour is against -my rules- the law.

I’ve jaywalked and have had cops in their cop cars pull up to me too and tell me not to so . I’m half white half Japanese.
Man, we can't even take a simple walk down the street without being criticized for doing something "illegal"

Cops breaking laws aren't cops they're lawbreakers and should be treated accordingly.
Not in the system meant to protect them and allow for bulshit...
How exactly? Theres a reason this is condemned and most cops aren't racist most of them just want to go home to there families the only reason we think there are more bad cops is becasue the media only shows this because negativity sells if they showed us noithing but good cops no profits
@@chrisprizzle278 police officers are not exempt from the law. if police officers themselves are breaking this law, why doesn't that officer arrest his colleagues?
well cops have this higher privelege , they can u turn right left or any way.
THE thing is they all do it,ALL COPS are criminals.
Their is NO law saying you must carry i.d. while walking down the street
i got stopped for crossing the street at midnight, zero traffic, at a no walk signal. something like that is never about jaywalking.
