This cop pulled his gun on a student who was picking up trash in front of his dorm.

Zayd Atkinson, a student at Naropa University, was confronted by an officer while picking up trash for his work-study job outside of his dorm. The officer did not have reasonable suspicion that a crime was occurring and was not entitled to demand Atkinson's date of birth, according to an independent review by a former U.S. Attorney.
Research shows Black people are often exposed to heightened scrutiny and suspicion, which can begin early in childhood. 54% of Black Americans say they felt others 'have been suspicious of them because of the color of their skin,' compared to 6% of white Americans.
Several officers, some with guns drawn, surrounded Atkinson. A college faculty member later appeared to back up Atkinson. The police officers never asked the faculty member, a white man, to confirm his identity or prove that he worked for the college.
After almost 15 minutes, the officer gave Atkinson back his ID and left. The officer resigned two weeks after the incident but will remain on the city payroll until February 2020. An internal investigation found the officer violated 2 department policies but did not conclude he was racially biased.

    • And they have no idea how to deescalate the situation. The faculty member comes and says he knows him, but they make him stand ten metres away so he has to shout to try to calm the dude down, which obviously doesn´t work because who calms down when someone yells at you? Let the man go to him and talk to him quietly and let him know they will deal with it. But the cops don´t want a discussion they can´t hear happening because they want to control the situation that they caused. Even at the end the cop couldn´t let it go. He had to keep talking. Just say "I´m going to put your licence here and then walk away. Sorry for the inconvenience." and then do it and walk away. But no, he needed the last word. No wonder he got fired.

    • That is a different officer. It was the other officer, the first one, who irritated him. The other officers had nothing to do with it, they were made to believe that the young man was dangerous or holding a weapon.

He seemed really on top of it: - Students may not have driver’s licenses - Even with a driver’s license, it may not show the college dorm address - Student ID would probably not show dorm address - Someone picking up trash is unlikely to be causing issues for residents - Didn’t let student prove they could enter the building - Didn’t know the law - Didn’t know when to just walk away as the best course of action

The student never had to comply with anything, or tell the cop anything. That being said? The student properly identified himself, provided proof of his right to be there, and even offered to open the door using a key with his name and picture on it, all in the first 66 seconds of conversation. • It is not pride. I see this type of thinking all the time on subjects which have nothing to do with this. Once someone starts down a mental pathway they keep to that direction because they can do nothing else. It is why if a person who commonly debates in poor faith hears certain words they will make an assumption based on the data they already have set in their mind before the conversation even takes place. Then continue to speak as though they are right even after being proven wrong. We are more animal than some think. The act of pride in this case would actually be a fear response in this case. Someone attempting to control the situation because they are confused. It might be a fear response as you said though it could also be something else.

Common sense says no, that’s a stupid idea, the accused is not stupid, the police officer is clearly a boob. I mean if the accused is going to go to elaborate lengths to break into a student house, of all places, why then waste all that time and energy of pretending and then create noise by breaking the door? If he knows how to pick locks, then the accused wouldn’t pretend anything.

Honestly the moment he took the taser out on him was where the line was really drawn, especially if he wasnt threatening him at all. If you're afraid of a stick like that, then you shouldn't have a firearm or a taser on your belt.

    @_AwesomeLogic_@_AwesomeLogic_7 ай бұрын
    • He told him to show his id and then it will end there which was a total lie. In some states legally you do not have carry id or produce when asked. But you also want to mindful and read the room sort of speak because like it or not in a public forum the cop has the power. Comply and get home alive and then report the cop formally after the fact. It is not always the easiest to do because some cops try and bait to respond negatively so they validate their aggressiveness. The cop really wanted to tase the guy but the guy was not raising his voice or acting aggressively. So instead of defusing the situation the cop was trying to escalated matters.

  • Watching this video is deeply troubling. It's disheartening to see instances where assumptions based on stereotypes lead to unnecessary confrontations. It's crucial for law enforcement to approach situations with an unbiased mindset. In this case, the individual was peacefully cleaning his yard, and the items in his hands were simply tools for that task. It's essential for us as a society to foster understanding and address biases to ensure fair and just treatment for everyone. Let's hope for accountability and positive changes in policing practices.
