But still very similar concept and sound... Except for a bad time when you don't hear it... I guess for both the engine and the grill situation..

We used to run it in a shallow sea-swell at about 70 mph, and it was a safe, but violent experience hitting every other swell-top - but it was a shed-load of fun. I can’t imagine doing 100 mph on top of that, in anything floating 🤣

  • Those "strange" noises that are heard while maneuvering, are the clutches on each drive being engaged/disengaged. The pilot is essentially steering the boat at that point with the independent props...

    @goldsburg@goldsburg2 жыл бұрын
    • Those are not clutches. The boat has crash boxes. What you hear are the PT's being engaged and disengaged via disc brakes on the PT shafts. You put the drives in and out of gear while the PT is not rotating, that's the whole idea behind crash boxes. There are buttons on the shift levers to engage and disengage the brakes as you shift and manoeuvrer the boat.

  • Take that boat through Haulover and I might be impressed.

    • That boat will have zero issues with Haulover. Plenty of MTI's, Skaters and Mystics have crushed Haulover.

  • Looks like Havasu landing? I heard the street party Thursday for desert storm is back on...the city had canceled it due to COVID at one point. Over 200 boats registered for DS poker run.

  • If that is prop driven what kind of massive reduction gear is in that thing? I think the ship I was on in the Navy was 300 (rough) to 1 from turbine to shaft.

    @bbaff8622@bbaff86222 жыл бұрын
    • There is no reduction box. There is a power turbine designed to spin at similar rpm as a normal V8, so about 6500 rpm. What ever reduction is there, is just the normal reduction in the drives. Your story does not add up. Usually ships that use gas generators as propulsion units, being it engines like the LM1500 or LM2500, don't need a reduction in that magnitude. Heck, even if you drove the prop straight off of the HP shaft which you NEVER do, that would be about 9000 rpm at full chuff. Normally a PT on an LM 1500 and LM2500 spin at about 3000 rpm or so, so in order for a big commercial or naval vessel to achieve useable prop speed at say 150-300 rpm depending on ship size etc. it would only need a 10:1 or 20:1 reduction. If it was a water jet propelled ship, then the PT shaft would go straight to the input shaft of the jet pump without a reduction.
