  • I forgot to add, I used to live on an exquisite 65' New York Yacht and Engine house-yacht in Bahia Mar (back in the Fifties (I'm 76 now) and the big deal was to go up to Pompano and watch big sports fisherman trying to come in Hillsboro Inlet. Spectacular! Port Everglades was benign by comparison. In fact Hillsboro was every bit as hairy as Haulover. Now I just teach sailing to potential bare-boat charterers on Buzzards Bay---pretty ideal training ground! Cheers.

  • With the last boat, also note the bowline neatly coiled on the foredeck ... you can see it right at the start. Of course that ends up tailing in the water and there’s one place it’s going to head and then they’ll be in trouble

  • I was in the Navy and on a ship deck at least 20' above the water. In rough seas we were required to wear life jackets when working on deck. Get knocked out and thrown overboard with no vest and you're gone. Same applies to inland lakes as well.

    • Your absolutely right I was in the Coast Guard, in the Seventies, Cape May Coast Guard sent out the 82 Footer the wrong boat to send out, it wasn’t nice as the 82footer has a semi round bottom, not good in rough seas but is a fast boat, full bore it will top 50+ mph. Well we were waiting for the. Franklin to get close to the lightship, with the round bottom and 3-4ft. seas. A seaman was going on liberty for a week, but the Franklin rolled in toward the lightship, the seaman was on the top rung of the jacob’s ladder, and the Franklin cut his leg off below the knee. We got him aboard the 82footer to get him to the hospital, needless to say Brian made back to shore in 34 minutes, and was rushed to the hospital, when I last saw him he had an artificial leg and foot, and was doing quite well.

  • Good observations and I love dropping the hook at Haulover's sandbar or spending the night in FIU cove. I was once coming out of Hillsboro Inlet, another inlet known to be bitchy at times. It was my wife and I on our Chaparral 240, a 24ft. express cruiser. As soon as we left the Inlet we encountered 4 foot swells. These are not normally unsafe for this boat but definitely not enjoyable. The problem that day was how closely spaced they were, if I remember less than the length of the boat which was like a bucking bronco. I was definitely anxious but waited but a break in the sets and quickly turned back to the inlet, rode the back of a swell and mercifully re-entered the inlet and safety again. After that day I always made passengers wear a pfd when traversing an inlet.

  • Having lived on boats and sailed thousands of miles, I am always convulsed when I see the combination of inexperience and lousy boat design interacting. My buddy used to have a pair (in sequence) of those superb 1929 Chris Craft Commuters. They had deep, convex V hulls. Repeat: CONVEX deep vees. 25-30 knots into stiff SW (25 knots) winds on Buzzards Bay. All we did was gentle cleaving of the 2-4-foot waves. Sent spray WAY to the side. No pounding. The reason the new deep-vees are straight-sided is to prevent these yahoos from broaching. They just don't know boat-handling. You can have all the speed you want---you'll still pound your molars out. More moronic is the concept of using BALSA wood in sandwich hull and stringer construction! Brilliant. The combination of imbecility and water is always hysterical......
