  • Meanwhile here in Moscow the city is gearing up for Victory Day tomorrow. Posters marking the event are on the sides of buses and on the windows of supermarkets, cafes, hairdressers, you name it. Flags fluttering and flying everwhere - including the occasional red hammer and sickle. It's a day of remembrance and a day of huge celebration. Fireworks all over the city in the evening once it gets dark. And people go onto the street or lean out of their windows and shout "URRRAAAAAAAH!!" Long live Russia!

The myth of “Great Patriotic War”, of Mother Russia surrounded by enemies who dream of nothing else but conquering it… Serves well as an excuse for the crappy social-economic conditions and justifies the need of “strong leader” - who needs a war from time to time to keep the myth alive.

    • Indispensable. It took Russia so long to get to the point of invading Ukraine. Partly because they hoped for diplomacy to take the place of military action. And to have time to rearm and regroup after the events of 2014-2015. Also, because the Russians were acutely aware. That once this conflict started, there could be no turning back. The stakes could not be higher. They will escalate to the Nth Degree if necessary.

That was a surprise at the time of his first invasion of Ukraine wasn't it. Oh, then there was the time that he lobbied for Yanukovych in Ukraine before Yanukovych got elected. Can you imagine a foreign head of state being welcomed to lobby for a president of a foreign country. A different relationship existed between the 2 countries then. Anyhow, Yanukovych was elected as head of a government that had a mandate to sign up with the EU. So what did Yanukovych do? Signed up with Russia instead sparking the Maidan revolution. If more than 100 enlisted I would be shocked as our present so called government have treated the British working people like scum for yrs. Anyone having the audacity to display the union flag has been described as extreme far right scum. That demographic is where the army would normally recruit so I can't believe that they would rush to enlist in a suicide mission against a nuclear power. If all these so called politicians are so convinced that going to war against Russia is a good idea they should provide leadership by enlisting themselves. Only a moron would try to start a nuclear war with Russia our present government have been really really bad at everything but going into an unwinnable war really is off the scale in stupidity.

Short range nuclear weapons). - The better reasoning would be the lifting by the UK and France of the current restrictions placed on Ukraine by those countries on the use of cruise missiles against Russia would mean Russia heartland (including Moscow & St Petersburg) would be open to attacks by Ukraine using the Storm Shadow cruise missiles. Though such attacks would not stop Russia's victory over Ukraine, such strikes and consequent civilian deaths and damage would lead to strong pressure for Russia to go after uk and France directly and thus widen the conflict; something which President Putin does not wish to do so. - President Putin would rather concentrate on formulating measures and gathering consensus on those measures to strengthen BRICS before the September conclave in Kazan, Russia. • Troops from other NATO countries can of course carry American made nuclear weapons - they don't have to have designed and manufactured them themselves like France and Britain do. This has always been a potential flashpoint. If you go back to the famous Cuban missile crisis of 1962, while not publicly known at the time, this had been triggered by an earlier move by the US to deploy nuclear-tipped missiles to its NATO partners Italy and Turkey (France had refused to accept them). By 1961 the US had 15 liquid-fueled Jupiter missiles ready to go and deployed in five sites across Turkey. Each missile was fitted with a 1.4 megaton nuclear warhead. With a range of 1,500 miles, this put Moscow and other targets in the then Soviet Union under clear threat.

  • It comes down to strategic vision. For decades we have spent astronomical amounts of money on military hardware with no real thought about how situationally useful any of it would be. A prime example of this is aircraft carriers. We have 11 of them and Id need a super computer to figure out just how big that mountain of money would be. And they are useless against a first line military power like Russia, as they would never get close enough to do anything but be a target. Patriot missiles cost so much money, that even if they worked, we couldn't afford to use them for long. AND RUSSIA IS A NUCLEAR SUPPER POWER.

    @steveclapper5424@steveclapper542417 күн бұрын
    • Here in the UK we now have a new aircraft carrier. Our only. Splendid bit of kit. Cost us billions. We're very proud. It didn't work at first, but they fixed that by spending a few million more of our money. It floats beautifully. The paint is pristine. OK, we don't have any aircraft to put on it but - as befitting our place as Washington's bitch - we pay for the US marines to use it. We pay them. And they do what they like. Awfully nice chaps though.

    • The amount of money spent each year just to maintain one aircraft carrier is equal to the GDP of some countries. And like you said, we have 11.

      @josephvanwie6706@josephvanwie670616 күн бұрын
    • Russia is not a first line power, not even close with how poorly its doing in this war. Those 11 carriers would sink the entire Russian navy and its single carrier and handle full of major surface ships in a matter of days or weeks should a war start. The Russian submarine fleet was once a match for the US but likely its been facing major issues similar to how poorly the Russian army did in the opening weeks and months of the war. So it wouldnt do a lot better than Russia surface fleet. Now China could stand up to US and its navy. But China has a navy many times larger the Russia. And has spent hundreds of times more to get it to that point. Russia simple cant compete with its limited resources. Hence why its united shipbuilders went bankrupt last year.
