Classic case of cascade component failure spreading from the suspension to the drive train. That bus was in pure agony. Thank god these guys did some very thorough diagnostics. That patient is in good hands.
It’s interesting that they went to the trouble of moving most of the suspension components down but for some reason they missed the shock mounts and the leveling valve. So close to completing it correctly, those details will make all the difference and I am sure he will be much happier with it when he leaves BGM!
Still amazing to me how much can be wrong with these beast and they just keep on going. Maybe not safe but they keep on rolling.
Hi Scott, Here in Australia you’d have to get an engineering report to do a conversion like this. It would cost a fortune! Just the report would be 20-30k ide imagine. For a car it’s around 5-10 K. Boy he’s lucky your there, no good having a nice couch and bed if your brakes, suspension and steering’s shot! Keep up your excellent work! 🇦🇺🍺🍺
If the “rebuilders,” and I use that term extremely loosely, were negligent enough to not understand the basic geometry 📐 of a chassis lift and all components that will be subsequently affected, I can only imagine what other issues that this coach will have if you choose to dig deeper!

I have had trouble getting car tires mounted properly. Insane lug torque, and when I took it back, they sent me out with 15 psi. And poor balancing. What more can you do wrong, crack my wheels too?
I am always surprised at how many people will tackle a job that they know nothing about and how bad the condition of some of these buses is that we pass on the road, Scott, as many have said before, we are very glad Bus Grease Monkey is there to save the day, and the people!
Amazing work as always Scott, you and yours❕ It's a head scratcher that no other? Person, shop??? Found what you did! Shock don't just fall off, break, break bolts off, there is always a reason. Parts replacement mills, that what they do. This bus is going to ride better, steer better, brake better, the geometry will be right to carry a normal load. Full or max extention on the bags and shocks preload the rear, it must have been a handful in the rain or snow.
My first introduction to working on buses and buses. Amazing stuff, I want one, but need to get out of college first.

Shocking! The whole suspension design was changed on this bus in 1970, by the chief chassis engineer, Bill Sheppard. The earlier design was far superior, & bullet proof, but as everything in the 1970’s motor industry in the US, things that were not broken, got fixed!

When that hub dropped in the oil, I think I got some in my eye.
I'm thinking I'd be using a transmission jack to remove the hubs my back would thank me later!
Hats off! To that young man for not going ballistic after the hub fell into the grar lube and it went everywhere! Man of steel! Lol!

Holy smoke, Scott; you have laid healing hands on a bunch of very sick buses, most of them 30 years older than this Prevost, but this bus could have caused tragedy on the roads like few others. I love the seemless way you and your son ppear to work together and the way you allow the owner to be involved, earn a minor in BGM maintenance plus get swear equity on their bills. I truly admire your business model.
For sure. All you need to do is watch KT3406E's video where he ran an old clapped out bus into a tree at 'only' 20 mph to see just how devastating and potentially deadly even a minor accident can do with this type of flat front, rear engine bus.
This man plays an admirable role in the country. A good role model.

I love the way that the land of litigation has no annual vehicle inspection..
Commercial vehicles do but private vehicles, especially rv’s get a blind eye. We try to do our parts to always make them safer when they leave.

Depends on the state. If you register your vehicle in Virginia you have to get it inspected once a year. Car, truck, bus, trailer, private or commercial. Small single axle trailers are exempt, and there may be a few other exemptions, but only for small vehicles.
The incoming suspension geometry would be an excellent lesson on what/how not to do things. What a mess!! The owner is lucky to have brought it to you with your knowledge of these beasts. By fixing these messes you are absolutely saving lives...DOT should give you some kind of award IMO. I can't wait to see the suspension repairs completed:-) Keep up the great work guys!!!

I can't believe how this shops are still operating. This was a major structural change to the bus and they should have engineered the suspension to handle the changes in height. You guys keep doing what you guys do best, Scott and Son!!! keep it up!!!
Thanks for the old ditty redux! Hope you get this straightened out for this owner..... headroom isn’t much if it handles like dead axle buckboard with flat spot wheels....

Thanks for the video on the Prevost. That is a large undertaking and a brain buster for sure calculating what has to be done just to have that bus ride like a Prevost should. Looking forward to the test drive

I don't know what it is but I love the sound of a Detroit diesel from the 40s to the early 70s. Especially the early ones.
I watch every video you upload. It's a long-term plan of mine to wind up with one of these machines eventually. I turn all my own wrenches and there's not a lot I don't know when it comes to wrenching on a car or truck... but this is a different animal for sure. Still nuts and bolts, just BIGGER nuts and bolts. I enjoy learning from your videos.

Wrong air bags. You should have been so lucky! I am praying for the owner that the rest of the modifications were up to par. Very gracious of you to take this on.

You just cant trust anyone to do work they say they do or can do. So frustrating. So it takes a special group like yours to handle so many people. Great for you guys but very inconvenience for the ones that are not close. Its a talent what you guys do on these buses.
Excellent explanation on the leveling valve linkage issue. Not liking the way it handled is probably an understatement. Even in smaller vehicles, a messed up shock is a nasty issue. I can't imagine what that "setup" was doing to handling.

Normally those hubs are aluminum this one was steel. Same package size much heavier

Dropping the drum into the oil tub, I felt that
Retired big rig mobile truck mechanic here with my own rolling home; '96 Country Coach Magna. . . Since I don't like busy work, . . . like cleaning up an oil mess I created, . . . when I was at the shop, I would support the hubs in a ratchet strap sling setup with an engine hoist when pulling hubs. I could wiggle and pull the hub without a concern for supporting the weight. The setup time was always less than the cleanup time, and besides that, I didn't like crushing drain pans. I also avoided wrestling heavy steel objects like brake drums in wheel-wells in the same way. For some reason my back sensed that that was a bad idea. As higher functioning primates, we mechanics should always make tool and equipment devices to facilitate our repetitive work. If the oil seal had failed, such that I didn't need to catch much gear oil, I would use a wheel dolly and pull the entire dual wheel/hub assembly as a unit by removing the hub nut. I could disassemble everything out in the open after that. If I was out in the field, like in some remote trailer yard, and I needed to do a wheel seal, or more, I'd remove the wheels and hub nut, wiggle the hub off the axle a bit until the oil would drain (property owners didn't like oil in the dirt, or on their pavement), then put the inner wheel back on with a few inner lugs, and use my tire iron in one hand to pry and jar while pulling the tire out with the other. I'd walk the wheel/hub assembly just off the axle stub, and then lean it back a bit and roll it away from the wheel-well. . . . When my wife retires, I'd like to acquire an older Prevost with a Series 60. I think I'll go with a original build though, not a modified coach, like the one in this video.
This is an excellent case of what not to do when modifying chassis suspension. The steering on the other hand, that is a disaster and I'm sure this driver/owner was fighting it all the way. I can handle a little play in a steering column u-joint but never never never in the knuckle to steering gearbox input shaft. That connection must be tight at all times. This gentleman bringing his coach to your shop was the right thing to do as it will save his coach from further damage, but it saved his life. You are right however in that the bottom section of the coach should've never been touched or altered and if the tires were that far into the wheel well, they should've gone with a 22.5" low-pro tire which would've given them 2" inches difference over a stand-up 22.5". Had they done that, it could've avoided all the mess you're now dealing with. As you said, once all the corrections are made, that coach will ride like a feather in the wind.

The first thing I thought when he slid the hub off was, He don't know how heavy that cast Iron hub weights and it's going to slip into the pan.
I think this is the first non aluminum hub he’s touched.
I know... I was thinking the same thing, thought he was about to ask someone for a hand. I could tell just from looking at it, and the awkward working height, there's no way I would have been able to hang on to that thing by myself. Gotta be like 100 pounds there or more.

Love this channel ! I just cannot believe, all the engineering modifications and labor placed into raising the body, that no one stuck there head down below and seen the shocks and bags were maxing out. Is not that suspension modification 101 !?

Wish you were near by i have a Detroit 6v71 that is giving me some trouble. I have to hold the throttle open on it to get it to start and once it's warmed up for about a 45 seconds or so only then will it idle. Really smoky on start up as well. Engine is in a 1984 pierce dash firetruck. Love the videos man.
Fascinating to watch these repairs.....these old inter city buses sure look like money pits. I guess by the time Greyhound is done with them, they’re pretty well used up.

Holy smokes. Owner is lucky, REALLY LUCKY, that thing didn't come apart on him. Have seen many a plastic bus literally falling apart, but not a Prevost. After finishing the video, the owner might be better off just parting it out.
The whole time watching, I'm saying "poor bus!" At least she's in capable hands that will make it safe and pleasurable to drive.

It’s kind of surprising that insurers will write policies on old buses like this without requiring a comprehensive inspection, similar to a marine survey.
They will not do full coverage collision but just liability.

Haven't worked on Prevost in years I was the Neoplan man in the 80s and 90s.
Great job finding the problems with the suspension and you guys are putting back together correctly. It is astounding that bus did not end up on the ground. Question: are the shocks and air bags too small for a vehicle with that weight and size? Are you guys going feature that bus getting put back together?

Have you ever done an overarching bus conversion video? One that talks to what additional equipment and investment is needed? Electric power distribution, installation efforts etc.
Now that's a hot mess! What were they thinking when they cut the bus up? Just awful. If you get this remedied, I will bring you my pusher whenever I get it. You are awesome!
Object Lesson here for people, be completely aware of things that are affected when you change an original design of something.
What they did was change the entire geometry of the suspension because of the position of the leveling valve mislocation. I'm surprised the owner didn't have a major crash. I also can't believe someone would mount those huge tires and balance them properly. That could have cause a serious life threatening accident. Good thing he bought it to you to get repaired professionally.
boy, that suspension geometry is a disaster and that extreme backlash on the rear diff can't be good either. cant wait to see the improvement when done.

This only pulled in the shop here 3 days ago. What you have seen in this video is up to date from end of day yesterday. Waiting on parts for the next few days so you won’t see it until probably next week.

I wish you could have shown when you were all done and a test drive with the owner to tell how how better the ride is now. It had to be so much better and far safer when you got done with it.

After 38 years under vehicles, NOTHING surprises me anymore. The worst part is if people put in just as much effort to do it right as come up with half assed solutions, we'd be out of business, lol. I got tired of being on my back years ago and found some ARI Hetra lifts at auction for $8k and lifting a vehicle is so much nicer than crawling around underneath it, the 4 pc. set is good for 64k lbs. Even better is putting one up on stands and having the lifts usable for other cars and trucks.
Looks like they did good work on the cabin. Clearly had no idea how their decisions impacted the suspension though. All of that is very basic stuff. Eight inches of lift is significant. I'd be curious how many treads are engaged on the drag link.
BGM to the rescue! For all the chassis modification, would it have been better to start with a different bus? The owner should keep an inventory log on the unique parts and settings to make life easier when future mechanics are working on it.
I don't care what anybody says...I'm 43....and any old school Prevost with the Stainless sides is rockstar stuff...like GnR toured in back in 87. Too cool.
