A 1,070-mile train journey from Hanoi to Saigon (HCMC) on the Reunification railway, including the wonderful coastal scenery between Hue and Danang along the cliffs and through the Hai Van Pass. For timetables, fares & Vietnam train information see www.seat61.com/Vietnam.htm.
Thanks a lot for the video and info page, Mark. This looks like a very scenic line indeed with lots of coastal views!
Thank you for sharing this beautiful video. I enjoyed to see how's pretty my country side .
Very nice!!! I WALKED from Hanoi to Saigon 👣 it took me 3 months and 3 weeks by only walking 😂
thanks for the great video Mark! hope to be in one of those trains sooner.
SE1 departs Hanoi 19:00 day 1, Hue 08:02 next morning (day 2), Danang 10:31, Nha Trang 20:33 day 2, Saigon 04:30 day 3. SE3 departs Hanoi 23:00 day 1, Hue 10:50 day 2, Danang 13:12 day 2, Saigon 05:00 day 3. So both trains take 2 nights, 1 day.
So it takes a day and a half (referring also to the data in the video, you left 7pm (19:00) day 1, and arrived 6am (6:00?) day 3). Reminds me of Amtrak in the US--I once took Amtrak along the US east coast from Boston MA to Daytona Beach FL (and back)--roughly the same distance one-way, I'm guessing, but I think Amtrak was slightly faster (24 hours, or less). On the other hand, Vietnam has better scenery. :)
@@not-so-smartaleck8987 How did you get to Daytona? Cab from Deland?
Loved this one. Great work, terrific country. Thanks!
Hoping to take this train trip next week if all goes as planned. Thank you for the inspiration and the preview (and, of course, for all of your helpful information)!
Lovely scenery!!!

Super video. Reliving my trip there. Amazing country... Will be there again.
I travelled from Nah Trang to Ho Chi Min (Saigon) on this train in 2009. Fabulous journey
I love your videos mark! thanks a lot .. keep going!
Wonderful trip... I wish to take the train in same route! Thanks for posting video seat61!
You saw a lot of beautiful scenery during the trip, i like the video, a great job.
I think the coast between Hue and Danang is the most beautiful coast I've seen. Really like your video. Thanks for photographing!!!
then you probably have never travelled to another tropical countries. coastal area in Vietnam is only so so compared to Thailand, Indonesia, or even Philippines eventhough Philippines doesnt have long haul train journey yet.
What is the Food all the world know in Vietnam ?
Lovely country, lovely people, wish I could go back there soon. Great vid.
Stunning views!
Thanks for the informative videos.
Wow that's so beautiful. Love from India 🇮🇳🇻🇳
Good video thanks. I love Vietnam 🇻🇳
Nice to see these beautiful places in the world
Mark, many thanks for video & especially your website!!! Sine 2 years you're my top guide during travelling in SE Asia. We chose vietnamimpressive as travel agent for tickets. Hope that all will be ok :-) as you recommended. Great job&bst rgds fm Poland,
Wunder schöne Landschaften .Thank you "The Man in Seat 61" viele Grüße aus Deutschland.
From Hanoi to Danang we were in the Livitrans carriage, train SE1 From Danang to Saigon, in normal Vietnamese Railways soft sleeper, train SE3. Livitrans was a step above the DSVN sleeper, but the latter was absolutely fine. Several windows on the corridor side open in each car.
I believe from Hue to Da Nang a non-airconditioned hard seat would be fine, as you can easily open the window, instead of finding a toilet to open the window to film.
Either the corridor side is toward the land (and you'd have to find a toilet to open the window to see the sea) or the bed side is toward the land and you cannot enjoy the sea view on bed.
I'd stopped off at Hue before some years ago, and this was a limited-time business trip to gather train and visitor info, so we basically travelled Hanoi to Saigon straight through in 2 nights, 1 day. But we switched trains at Danang, as I wanted to check out both the SE1 and SE3.
Nice train ride Thanks
beautifully filmed, Mark. It is so wonderful to be able to open the windows on a train for photographing, unlike the European trains. It's understandable though with their high speeds. Give me back the early days.
Excellent condensed video.
04:15 I've seen that on Top Gear! Hope to travel to vietnam once in a lifetime. Thanks for the video
Thanks you so much, have a nice dayyy
Thanks for sharing! Hello from San Francisco. I was born in Saigon but don't remember any of it. Hope to visit one day.

Thanks, Mark, Will give it a go in November when heading for Halong Bay .
Thank you! Your video very useful!
nice video, thanks!
wow...great video!
amazing
Ooooooh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm going to Vietnam in November, first Hanoi then Ho Chi Minh City. Was thinking of doing the train trip BUT its a 36 hr journey (don't know how you did it in 9 minutes...). I'm still considering it but given the limited time I have might end up doing it by plane. But this is truly inspirational!
Do part of the journey, so you don't need to overnight on the train
it's wonderful awesome your video
simply fantastic, enjoyed the journey to saigon
Have a nice day'!!!
Livitrans sleeper is $49 Hanoi-Hue, $59 Hanoi-Danang. Regular sleepers about $80 Hanoi to Saigon
is that for 4 persons its 80$ or per person?
Well done.
incredible
I wonder how it could be a great journey. .!!
Great video
No worries. It's an allusion to a famous British Transport Film of (I think) the 1950s, 'London to Brighton in 2 minutes' which showed the driver's eye view of the London-Brighton journey, speeded up so the journey took 2 minutes on film.
Love to hear the sound
I n 1969 I was stationed in Danang during Vietnam War so I didn't get a chance to experience the true beauty of the country.
Have travelled the Saigon to Nha Trang maybe 4 times, the first was with my faience and I booked the 4 berth in the Blue Carriage on entering the cabin the guard kept back the two unused tickets but I made him give them back. Talking to others they try and sell them as an upgrade. He kept knocking the door as he passed in the night, so in the morning as we alighted I made to give him a 5oo,ooo VND note, he held his hand out and I just put it back in my pocket and made the gesture bang, bang. He looked away sheepishly. I now live half way between Saigon and Vung Tau and have driven that route up as far as Hue. Stopping off at great places enroute.
IIt is such a beautiful countryside . I wish I could be in that train.
damn...i love your video,man...
beautiful country
thanks man!
Your vidéo is just great....
Hi I have this exact trip in mind. I love train travel best way to see the countryside. Did you go straight through to Saigon or did you have stopovers on the way?
In Australia, I once took the train between Adelaide and Perth across the Nullarbor Plains by the Indian Pacific, a 3 days and 2 nights train trip (actually did it twice, back and forth). I said I'd never do it again. Hence it makes me very hesitant about this train trip...
Beautiful, Love the trains in Vietnam-What kind of camera did you use, good video
nice train video :)
so beautiful places beside the way i 'd like to be there
Great video! How much the ticket from Hanoi to Saigon?
Metfone about 40 - 80 usd. it has a variety of seating: bed or hard seat and soft
Thi Bich Nguyen Thank you!

Wow you are great
Thanks, inoue jerry, regarding where one can and can't film in Vietnam.Where do most of the passenger rail cars come from?
Lovely

Mr. Mark Smith, Yesterday , War, destruction , hatred , hunger , Communism . Today , tranquilit , joy , progress, beautiful cities, freedom and peace . Congratulations Vietnam. Greetings from Brazil.
Very good
beautifull
Great!
Bonito vagão de passageiros, poltronas confortáveis comida e bebida servida numa pequena mesa do vagão,muito bom, gostei!
Remarkable.
Mark, Would it be the same coastal route if we were to start the trip from Saigon to Hanoi ? Was a bit concern that the South to North track is not as good as compare to North to South .
Good clip. When was the line built ?
This is amazing, thank you! We wanted to know if its worth the 30hr trip from Saigon > Hanoi and looking for alternatives. Not sure if we can endure a whole 30 hours of a rickety train.
Funny thing is, you have to live through those 30 hours of you life somewhere. They don't go away. You can spend them at home doing boring stuff. Or in MacDonalds. Or in a car, stuck in traffic. Wandering the streets. In a hotel room. But spending them making an epic journey, a memorable adventure across Vietnam, with a bed to sleep in, room to move around, fab scenery out of the window (and cultural scenery inside the train too!) is no bad way to spend a few hours of your life! ;0)
+Mark Smith (The Man in Seat 61) I took that exact train journey as well and couldn't agree with you more
you can fly if you dont like long train ride or you can do half way train and half way by plane from hcm to da nang then fly from da nang to ha noi
Another great video, Mark. The food looked tasty. I'm guessing you hopped off at the station stops and there were vendors ready with hot meals? Or do they sell food on the train? What are the toilet facilities like?
Leslie Mosier I hate to think what toilets are like . They probably provide buckets
Leslie Mosier dumb n dumber is you
Excellent vid. And thanks for NOT speaking during the whole thing. Many do and it is a nuisance!
+samquan123 2 nights, 1 day. But on the video, it takes 9 minutes!
+samquan123 Why? It's only a day. Saves two hotel bills. And what a day - a fab experience!

the train have great view of country side , sea view , then moutain view :) my dad are crazy train lover ( likem any other japanese ) so we normal take a train ride from da nang to hcm one time for ever 3-4 year
Nice train ride.
the Hai Van Pass is definitely the steepest gradient the whole in Vietnam Railways system
i left ha-noi @ 8am? and arrived hcmc @ 630pm the next day, October on 2018. once was enough for me,thanks.......
Guard stations by all rural tunnels...single tracked - all of the way? Were your in-train movements limited?
I was traveling by train to, SE3, it's take long time, Hard sleeper.. lol.
Was I seeing things? Does the train go round in a great big horseshoe shape at about 3:43?
No. Actually the road you see faraway is for cars. btw its been 4yrs but hope u can still see this :D
great vid ! and this is vietnam , New Zealand take note lol!!!
When will there be a high speed train from Hanoi to HoChiMing city?
