Chris Harris Drives His Toyota Land Cruiser - The Go-Anywhere Off-Roader
"You go into the desert in a Range Rover, and you then use a Land Cruiser to get back out of it afterwards..."
Chris takes us along with him to Walter's Arena to put his 2008 Toyota Land Cruiser through its paces on their off-road course.
Described by many as the ultimate go-anywhere off-roader, Chris talks us through why he decided to chop in his 2020 G350d and replace it with this very usable example of Toyota's robust luxury SUV.

I'm 30 seconds in and I already know this isn't long enough...
Agreed, Chris is a gem.
If it was an hour it still wouldn’t be long enough I absolutely adore Chris, his dry no bullshit attitude 👌
I wish Chris would do a feature film on the GT4 RS.
@@unclewilbur8976 we can only dream
That’s what she said.
This is my favourite piece of content in ages, and not in any category just full stop. BBC are sitting on an absolute goldmine just giving Chris half hour segments to himself for this kind of stuff and a half hour wouldn’t be enough for 99% of us I could watch him chatting like this for hours 👌
I agree. The BBC should sidetrack the other 2… And call it Best By Chris… Get it… BBC :-)😊
Completely agree. They really don't understand how rare and special he and his-content can be
@@ghibli608 call it Chris Harris on cars.
@@Cous1nJack these noobs don’t know about pre top gear Harris
To me he makes TOP GEAR . When Chris did a tribute to the Late Colin McKray using his Subaru was so impressive . Great Bloke
I love vehicles that don’t try and be anything they’re not. LC is definitely part of the dream garage for me.
Runs forever. We have a 2002 model thats flawless still.
Long after the current trendy suvs and crossovers have been recycled in to a fridge or a dishwasher this thing will still be plodding along effortlessly anywhere you take it. What a machine.
Absolutely. I have a customer with one that I regularly detail and service. It's an absolute tank.
@2STEPSAWAY it's but it drink like a tank too especially in 4l diesel version but worthed every penny 😍👍
I nearly got a new LC as a Xmas present to myself 2 years ago. I was drunk at the time, and next day thought maybe not. It wasn't unaffordable but I couldn't justify it at the time as I was looking to buy a flat. I would like one though as it would last for decades until they find a new way to power electric cars.
@@oddities-whatnot They last decades if meticulously maintained. Unfortunately rust really kills them in the UK. So many have 'dangerous' MOT fails by year 10 due to rust and dodgy repairs.
We live in Aus - This is a legendary car here in Australia - in our family we have three LCs all of which are over 700,000 KM on the clock... These cars get used in here like they are meant to be... one of our LCs has been to every off-road track in AUS and is still like a new car...
Land Cruiser King in Never Never
My GXL V8 ute was a beast... I loved that thing, had it as a company car when I worked for a mining company in Kalgoorlie. I used it as a 4WD work ute every single day and in the most demanding of conditions. There was almost nothing it couldn't take in its stride. If anything, I'd say the V8 was a bit too powerful for 99% of what people would need and probably not worth the extra money unless you really need it. It never even hinted at letting me down, no matter what the temperature or task, but thank goodness I never had to pay for the fuel! It was shocking how thirsty it was when it was being worked. But as the saying goes: If you wanna go to the outback, take a Land Rover. If you wanna come home again, take a LandCruiser. Out there, nothing else will do.
Yea i bet it's hit every dirt track that a corolla could get down. People are taking rwd cars along the tele. Deep down everyone especially closetdd cruiser owners know that if you plan to do any actual off roading you get a nissan patrol.
@@Nick-sd7um I am glad you like Corolla...
He did get the phrase wrong though "if you are going into the interior (oz outback) take a Patrol, if you want to come back take a Landy"
I know a farm contractor in Cork Ireland who bought the older version of this new in 2003 with the 4.2L straight 6 diesel and he still has it, uses it all the time and has around 600,000 miles on it from new and it never misses a beat. He refuses to get rid of it, it's pulled big fendt tractors from fields that broke down and it's a complete donkey that NEVER lets him down.
That engine is even more reliable than the 4.5 v8
This makes perfect sense, Chris loves well engineered cars 👍 Toyota 4WD's are the singular choice for use in outback Australia.
It's also the singular choice throughout Africa and also the only SUV United Nations uses.
I own one of these in Australia and I agree 100%. Put a lift and some tougher tyres and these things are just fantastic in the most remote places you want to travel to.
I really like these types of chill mostly talking videos with Chris. They actually feel almost like vlog. And it's full of cosy vibes and dogs, and normal feeling like chatting. Perfect
I love it when Chris Harris shows us his personal cars and explains why he loves them .The Old M5 Sharknose video was also great as was the 2CV video and the Peugeot 205 video PLEASE MAKE a video showing us your opinions of "The all time Greatest cars" in your opinion and why. start with the Mitsubishi evo5
That 2CV video was so good! It was a long time ago now though.
Nailed it. I have an 80 series Land Cruiser and every single thing on the truck still works perfectly. This paired with my GT3 are all the car I will ever need.
I would like to get a 200 series but I don't want to down grade from a 80 series
@@micktaylorwolfcreekmechanical No, you don't. The 80 is the benchmark, even today.
I have a Toyota FJ Cruiser and a 981 GT4, so I have the lite version of your ideal garage. The FJ has seen hard use offroad, with several long trips from Cape Town up into africa proper. It has a snorkel and lifted OME suspension and has managed water crossings in the Okovango Delta midway up the windscreen at times. Never skipped a beat. It's true what Chris says about Cruisers and africa, you take a big risk putting your faith in anything else.
What a review by Chris Harris of the humble Toyota, Absolutely nailed it
A Land Cruiser is not just a car, it's something you look after for the next generation.
no that's a Patek Phillipe
Just as I'm moving to Shetland and already thinking of buying one of these, old Chrisy boy nails it for me.. I'd watch 2 hours of this !!
This is why Chris has always been a car guy. Been watching back when we had 480p
Having just completed a Safari in one of these with over 400km on the clock, couldn't agree more. The only car you see on the Tanzanian trails for a reason!
Nothing better than off-road Chris Harris content on a Sunday morning. Than seeing him in his natural element. Even taken his dog out for the day.. Plus enjoying his time out in front of the camera.. I simply have my coffee & a comfortable sofa 😂
Engineering masterpiece!
This is a really good tribute to a car whose real beauty is hidden underneath....The breadth of its abilities, the ownership experience, the static engineering and the real-world dependability of the 200 Series silently screams "SOD OFF" to every proponent of its (non-existent) competitors!!! Thank you Chris!!! Cheers from Nairobi, Kenya
Best co-driver ever.
Is that a (u.s.a. here) bull terrier? My youngest brother had one of these with that straight snout but his was white with a black circle around his eye. Was the most good natured, loving dog I've ever been around and would excitedly run and constantly spring up in the air like a deer on caffeine😄 little guy just died at 12-13 years old and my other brother buried him on their tree covered 5 acre property where he spent the last 7 years. Edit- yeah it is. Aka the ole US Spuds MacKenzie mascot and my brother's dog looked identical.
@@jeremyb4493 any dog is a great dog but bull terriers are extra lovely in nature. Sorry for your brother’s pup ♥️
Agreed Chris! My '16 LC200 also happens to be the "best" car I've ever owned. And while I haven't owned as many as you, I've owned (too) many. The Land Cruiser is built like a tank, is ultra-reliable, it's comfortable and reasonably luxurious. And certainly highly capable. Mine is the 5.7L V8 which I always assumed was the same 5.7L V8 in other Toyotas - Sequoia, Tundra etc. A side-by-side comparison by a youtuber revealed the LC engine is different. Built with harder and more durable plastics, larger and more solid reservoirs, etc. Point is: the Land Cruiser is simply "built differently". In a very good way!
I just love Chris Harris videos. It is never long enough. Can listen to him ALL DAY.
I have a 2013 Land Cruiser with the 5.7l V8. i take it off-road on the beach for 2 weeks each year. I've taken it off-road in the mountains in CO. It is a superb vehicle with impressive off-road abilities.
I have a 97 Land Cruiser and I approve of this message.
This is a return of peak Chris Harris; reminds me of Autocar and Drive days - a return to form. Thanks.
Someone who likes cars reviews the flashiest new Ferrari (not that Harris doesn’t do this very well) but people who really love them as machines just GET this. Brilliant vid!
One of the only cars I ever sold as a used car salesman in Johannesburg that had over 350 000km`s on the clock and sold for R50 000.00 over retail book value...the minute we advertised it for sale the phone started ringing and didn`t stop for over a week after it sold... P.S : You have very fine taste in dogs too Chris, English Bull Terriers are the best breed ever!!!
*Land Rover has left the chat*
Couldnt agree more. Had one of these for 10+ years. Not a rattle, not a squeak. The embodiment of reliably and no-fuss understated luxury.
I really understand your love and appreciation for your car. I own a Pajero 2800 intercooler turbo, a BMW 520 F10, a SEAT IBIZA GTI 16v group A rally car and a Toyota Yaris. By far my Pajero is my favorite car (and I know is not as good as a Toyota). 25 years and 222,258 miles after, I still love it and enjoy it every day as my daily drive and as a family car... Reliable as hell, I used it as my recce car for Cyprus Rally twice, 2010 & 2011 (meaning, it did the whole rally 6 times) and then it was my service car. I tow my trolley with the rally car to all the events. Still standing strong. Respect!
My grandpa owns an old Land Cruiser, and it is honestly one of the nicest cars to drive in. So when I heard that it is getting discontinued, I got a bit sad.
Love the last v8 gen of land cruises. They look timeless, bullet proof and to me rides like a rolls Royce even though I’ve never been in a rolls Royce
I have gone thru a 180 in life, ladder frame Japanese vehicles are the only thing I want to drive. And definitely in diesel, love the sound of it.
This and every other Land Cruiser is legendary in Kazakhstan 🇰🇿 Everyone who can afford one has one
Have a mate in NZ that put one on its roof in a lake completely submerged. 24 hours later, it was rescued, fluids drained, etc, and he's still using it. Everything still works, and that was in 2008. Got my father one in 2006, and he still says it's the best car he's ever owned. Towed his caravan 21 miles before realising the caravans brakes were still on. I'm not talking about a modern caravan but an old one that tipped the scales at close to 2 tons. Didn't even notice, though caravan needed new tyres and rims.
Chris the forest gnome… best car ever indeed!
Chris is just the best car reviewer with the best filming to go with it ever imo.
Being a car nut I used to be hung up on performance when I was younger. Being well travelled, and seeing these things go about their business in terrain beyond comprehension gains you an extra special love for Toyota. 💪 Great video.
The dog made it. Love Land Cruisers. Love Bullies. If ever there was a spirit animal for Chris it's that bully.
In Australia the LC200 and all the other models of LC are king and for a reason. I have one of the first 200's that came to Australia, 2007 Sahara, similar to yours except no seat heating - it doesn't get cold here at least in WA. But you are absolutely correct, they are an immensely capable vehicle, and put most others to shame in going through the rough and tough. Yes they love to drink, but hey in Australia which is a huge place as compared to the UK, then you do what you have to do in order to get around. I love the simplicity of the vehicle and its virtually 'bullet proof' performance and reliability! I've said to my wife, I have no desire to get another car for the purpose that I use this one. Good review. 👍
An LC200 is one of my dream cars, too bad the current price of LCs in Australia has priced me well out of the market
Please tell me how many liters for 100km Thank you.
@@fastlion6553 with my 200 I get around 15-16 litres/100 kms around town, 13-14 litres on the open road or highway and when I’m on the boggy tracks in the bush or the beach then I can expect to get anywhere from 18-24 litres/100 kilometres. Like any situation the variables change depending on the road conditions, tyre pressures and how much gear you are carrying. The beaches down here in the great southern and south west are pretty soft so you have to be prepared to go through the fuel.
@@crispyinasia61 as a Toyota fan I feel so proud about your experience.
These are the Chris Harris videos I was unknowingly waiting for. Never watched him on Top Gear as it died for me when the real trio left but Chris is so good just on his own.
Mr Toyoda was a legend and built some awesome machinery. 👌
Love the way he keeps the reviews very different every one’s doing hi end cars as a review nobody keeps it real the message is you don’t need to spend thousands to make you self happy anybody can have a nice new car, these days it’s not like it was when l was at school cars are not as special as they once was on the road and everyone is getting in to debt for something they can’t afford and doesn’t really make them truly happy because if it did they would keep it for ever and remember it or keep it until you really needed a new car l Love to see a top gear show or a car show on older cars cars that was out of your price range but now in arms reach l think that’s what we need as times are getting harder also it saves the planet keep the reviews coming 👏🏾👍🏾👊🏽
Ah Walters Arena, many a muddy mile around that awesome motoring nirvana
Check Scotty Kilmer's youtube channel if you want the true, honest opinions on cars.
Defiantly one of my top 5 dream cars
Thank you for the such reviews. Love the way Chris explains everything honestly. Such content is as rare as sensible cars, like this Land cruiser
You can tell Chris has driven one too many Range Rovers that he is astounded that everything works in his Land Cruiser.
Chris’ content is endlessly watchable… top stuff!
I have a 2013 URJ200 (US V8 gas version) in New England. Chris is spot on with his review. It just proceeds... anywhere, even towing our 2 ton travel trailer. A personal bonus is it that it doesn't stand out. There are so few of them that one really knows what it is. But the ones who know... they know. I plan to keep it forever.
Great content, Chris! Land Cruisers are like red wine: Just getting better as they age.
more chris, more pip, here for it all
i have waited long enough for this video, thanks chris! Absolutely love the land cruiser and what it stands for!
Chris Harris, Legend. 200 series Landcruiser, Legend. Great film 👌
I always look forward to content that Chris is headlining
Great video, really enjoyed it. I had a 100-series and now a 200. They are fantastic machines.
Australia and Africa love the Land Cruiser.. No nonsense vehicles. Just pure awesomeness
I’m an European living in west Africa, and I can confirm these are the must have cars, the premium luxury vehicle everyone aspires to have at some point in their lives. Can’t beat Toyota and the Land Cruiser in terms of build quality and reliability. It’s a top top car.
More videos of this please! I just bought a 200 series here in the States and catching up on various maintenance. I have already fallen in love and have completely forgotten about my 100 series I just parted with.
I LOVE that you made this video! Of all the different cars I've driven, Land Cruisers have always been my favorites. I'm also sad at the same time, because you're adding to the Land Cruiser hype, pushing up the prices even more just before I'm about to buy one. 😂
Such a satisfying wholesome watch. Thank you Chris.
In this video, Chris himself embodies the ethos of his Toyota - he’s very practical, and not very glamorous. Well done!
Yet again you've got me wanting/ needing a car a hadn't given a second thought to before, cheers Chris keep up the awesome work dude . 👍👍
We need a full length adventure out in this thing Chris. Remember its not just this one, its generations of Landcruiser's before it that brought us here, All brilliant in their own way when released. Had an 80 series until recently and was started to show some age after THIRTY years. Moved on to the 200 as soon as I heard they were dropping the V8 and the Tailgate. Impresses me every day I drive it. 3 kids 1 wife and half the house in the back for trips away, no worries, There and Back again.
I would like to get a 200 series but i don't want to down grade from a 80 series lol
We love our 200 series and have enjoyed the distant remote places that it takes us. Good video!
Chris you rock as well as the Land Cruiser 200 Diesel/Petrol V8! Thank you for making these informative and thorough videos. Cheers mate
One cannot say enough about the quality build of these vehicles - Toyota reliability is legendary. I drive a 1984 FJ 60, and it is still going strong.
They are the GOD TIER vehicles down under in Australia... they can cross the country without fail in comfort no matter what. awesome video.
Thankyou for shedding some light on a true quality car
My neighbor has this car and they have had it for over 20 years and they swear by it for its comfort and capability, they drive to Turkey on a regular basis. It's tough and an enjoyable ride. I agree with you far superior to most high end SUV's
Waiting for Chris Harris' 11 min feature is worthwhile. Nothing like it. So refreshing,no background music needed.
I bought a new 2021 Land Cruiser to tow my caravan which it did admirably for a 13 month trip around Australia. I have sold the caravan now but there's no way I'm selling my LC. I love this car. Comfort plus and probably as reliable as any car on the market today.
Great, insightful video Chris
I share your feelings Chris I've been driving Land Cruisers for 30 years and I've loved every single one of them, but my 200 has been my favorite so far. Wish I could have the diesel version. Great segment I really appreciated the genuine interview and practical stroll in you personal 200. Godspeed
Thanks for showcasing its go-anywhere spirit. 👍
Chris, we need more journalists to do reviews like this, not about new cars, but older ones, maybe ones weve forgotten about, ones that revive memories for people. Excellent
Great review, thanks Chris. I’ve got a 1997 80 series, 4.2 turbo diesel. Absolute beast of a machine and effortless in all it does.
I've had 1996 and sold it last year, I am still not sure why I did that..!!
I'd still say this is an underrated car. Love the LC, it's incredible! Even more tempted to get one now!
Buying that Land Cruiser was one of the best decisions in my life. I wouldn't add nor subtract anything more from what has been said about this car. It's simply the best, oldschool and long lasting vehicle one can get in the whole car engineering history. And to tell the truth - they don't make this kind of cars any more. It's a partner in everything for life.
Great presentation ! Apart from looking at the car - I was most impressed with the whole video production - beautifully shot, edited and presented.
Perfectly done, Chris. It is *not* an SUV, it's a pukka 4WD off-roader with a lot of creature comforts built to industrial standards. If want something that makes an impression at a swanky event, get a Range Rover: if you want something that will muck in and get on with it, get a Toyo LandCruiser.
Agreed. I have a 2019 LC that will stay in my family forever. It goes anywhere and does everything comfortably.
I love me some Chris Harris on (Collecting) Cars.
LC is a thing of beauty. It's loveliness increases, it will never pass into nothingness.
I have what I like to think is a baby Land Cruiser - a 12 year old Rav4 - beefy and sturdy. Frankly I don't see too much difference in my impressions and my feelings - built to last and built to perform. Love it! But having said that - this is the puppy I would love to have when my car grows up!! I work extensively in the Arabian gulf, and the countries there are just oozing with these puppies, and performing with astonishing reliability.
I sold our 2000 V8 petrol in Dubai with over 400,000 km ,everything still working to a very happy local, who is still running it hard. They do get through Dunlops at an alarming rate though! Nice tribute Chris thanks!
Best land cruiser review yet, and very helpful with the G Wagon comparison.
I adore my 100 series LX but I am craving the upgrade to a 200 series, brilliant video as always Chris!
Id watch a long form series of chris going about his day with his dog.
Chris is so captivating.
It's a living legend. I had on for fourteen years on issues at all, ages like fine wine.
So glad you made this video Chris! I’m a Brit car enthusiast living in California and have really fallen for the Toyota brand! These land cruisers are the ultimate do it all vehicles! I currently have ‘21 4runner which you guys unfortunately do not get in the UK. Totally over engineered, bullet proof and most capable body on frame vehicle’s out there! I recommend watching Dave from “Automotive press” KZhead channel to truly understand how amazing these vehicles are!
UK has both the Prado and the Surf. Both are identical to your 4runner
I am the same, i started working in Nigeria a few years ago, 3/4 of the cars there are toyota. It seems its only the UK or Europe who are in the dark. Since working here, i really want the 5.7L V8 Tundra. It's the pickup chassis to your 4runner
we have the land cruiser prado which is pretty much a 4runner with slightly different body panels and uglier front end design.
This video should’ve been at least 3 times as long. I can listen to this man talk about cars for hours
Just bought a 2010 petrol 200 series! The most complete car ever made. Sports cars aside, it is the answer to every question here in Australia.
This car is a tank. If not because of London's ULEZ zone I'd have one yesterday! That 4.5 V8 diesel is a nuclear reliable unit. Well done Chris. Been a fan since your Autocar days.
Greatest SUV ever made imo
Great video Chris. I'm a Toyota fan. I've had since 1989 1 corolla 4wd est and 8 Rav4s since 1995 now driving a 2019 rav4 hybrid. When Toyota had Club Toyota I went on a Landcruiser off road course with Motor Safari in Wales. A fabulous day learning all the off road skills. I completely agree with this review, a fabulous vehicle.
First the r129 and now this? Man this guy has taste 👌🏻
I’ve got an 04 Lexus GX in the garage and I feel the same way about it. The GX isn’t as posh as the LC but it shares a lot of the same ideas and hardware under the skin. There’s something very compelling about them and I still enjoy cruising around in it all these years later.
Used to sell these back in the early '00s - brilliant machines!
I drive a 1991 Land Cruiser. It had been badly abused by previous owners, towing, salt water dips, poor maintenance, bolts missing, you name it, they tried to kill it. I have taken care of it for ten years and it is by a very long way, the best vehicle I have ever owned.
all day, every day with these. Others have already said it in the comments section, the best recent 10+ minute video on KZhead full stop.
Finally, some well needed objective opinion for the LC, and I'd like to see some more videos on the 300 series especially the GR version.
