What can be done to improve life chances and health outcomes for people with Down’s Syndrome?

Those living with Down Syndrome and other learning disabilities have long faced poorer life chances, health outcomes and a life expectancy around 20 years lower than the average. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
What can be done to improve the picture was a question that our reporter, Ruben Reuter, put to politicians in charge when he went along to a reception at Downing Street being held to mark World Downs Syndrome Day.

    • Ruben is brilliant. It is just a shame that he only gets "rolled out" when it is to do with disabily related news reports.

    • @@AnyKeyLady Do you think he would be good for reporting on the complexities of Ukraine or the middle east? He has his script and he asks his questions. Fair play. But does he have the depth of knowledge to report on something difficult? Whoever he interviews is briefed to be gentle and not wrap him up on long words or distracting narratives. Its nice to see people with Downs represented on TV but lets not push reality.

  • I have fibromyalgia and functional neurological disorder. I cannot get a wheelchair on the NHS because it would be predominantly used outside my house because my house is too small to use the wheelchair inside and I don’t need to be in a wheelchair at all times. This means I can’t go out of my house independently and without being in absolute agonyand it impacts the whole of my independent life so how does the government expect me to go back to work?

    • @meme4one I thought it was relaxed and easy going to watch, I thought the mp looked suitably uncomfortable- and to be fair, this spin doesn't get aired very often- so it's better to hear the questions and answers than a big old ding dong. I felt that a firm boundary was set and a standard was firmly staked.

  • Down Syndrome people can contribute to society. They are not useless. They need more help than others. So do the blind, the deaf, the crippled in a wheelchair. They are still citizens and some have skills that can be useful if they are helped to develop them.

  • Brilliant interview, tough questions politely delivered. We all need to hold the Tories to account on their awful agenda! Huge steps forward have been made in the uk over my lifetime, but more can be done. We need to look at the way the US treats people with Downs Syndrome, its streets ahead of where the uk is.

    • Support for all children is standard but people with disabilities need more care.

      @reallymakesyouthink@reallymakesyouthinkАй бұрын
    • Hello, I apologise, I meant "support for all children with learning disabilities, regardless of diagnostic status," i.e., for the children waiting 3 years for an assessment in mainstream school. Often, children with hidden disabilities (ie autism as mentioned) are mistreated in school settings for the results of their needs being misunderstood and unmet. Regularly punished, isolated, excluded, and branded poorly as very young children and young adults. Where as if they were able to access support services, if education settings and social care providers were better provided to support teachers and students, and the support was available to meet the needs, rather than only meet the diagnoses. The MP who is interviewed says that the referrals have increased, and so they are struggling to meet diagnostic needs - however, they are increasing funding to do that. My rather reactive comment wasn't really as much about celebrating downs syndrome - which I absolutely am very excited about and don't mean to over shadow that at all and I am pleased to see that they are leading the way by employing a downsyndrome first approach in parliament by employing people with downs syndrome to speak and identify solutions in practice. More of this please 🙏 and I agree that there needs to be an increase and drive for supporting people with downs to level up and creating equal chances and equal opportunities for study, travel, and arts and social engagement as well as independence and employment- supporting creativity and philosophy and multiple talents in the workplace and not just an opportunity for ticking boxes or having a volunteer. Sorry, I'm digressing, my reactive comment was because like he says, people are dying early and one of the reasons is through the stigma and trauma that can be caused from school age with punishments and misunderstood children not being given the educational support they need in school settings. Whilst they are waiting 3 years for a diagnosis, damage is being done that could be easily avoided by understanding and meeting the needs of children with learning disabilities. I agree that disabled people do need equality and extra support to achieve that, particularly people with downs syndrome, especially because their personable, physical, creative, philosophical, uniting, academic, sporting, artistic talents are often sidelined by being inaccessible to develop, except for the wealthy, they don't have as much encouragement for career progression, and are often in infantalised or niched in disability clubs and garden centres. Not knocking those niches at all, and volunteering and speaking to people on and as the level we are is one thing, but what I mean is that people with downsyndrome are professional talented people that can be direct and think outside the box and are very much required to make changes and development in business and industry and in social design, as well as crafts and everyday volunteering. I did write this earlier, probably in a much 😅 better way, but my battery ran out. I am so bothered about this topic, and I'm so glad that it's been brought up.
