Hanif Kureishi on life, death and dreaming of returning home
It was Boxing Day last year when the acclaimed British writer Hanif Kureishi - author of the Buddha of Suburbia - was hospitalised after a fall in Rome that left him paralysed. Since then his family have helped him share his pain, frustration and creativity via moving - and sometimes darkly comic - outpourings on social media.

Earlier today he briefly left the London hospital which has, for now, become his home, for his first TV interview since his life was changed forever.
The writer has, through the suffering, been documenting his journey in extraordinary blog posts - which are now being turned into a book.

I love this man. His work and art have given so me much throughout my life (I'm 50). Something in my brain lights up when I read his work or just hear him speak.
G-d Bless Hanif Kureishi for having the courage of his principles and, sticking with our glorious NHS. "Like living in a shopping mall" is surely a description of living in a hospital that anybody who has also done so, can easily identify with. Presumably Mr. Kureishi is awaiting a place at Stoke Mandeville. I hope he'll be on his way much sooner than he expects.
His intellect is intact.his soul is bruised though and all the love In this world will see him through this difficult phase.
I wish him the best recovery ever! He's so brillant and talented and his story is unbelievable.. Go Hanif!!
What are great, man, when we all grumble over small issues. This man brings home how lucky those that have our health are. I wish this brave man the very best, and I am sure he will make it home.
Thank you for your honesty. I wish you health and healing and strength in the months ahead ❤
I’m sorry to see this . I wish him recovery
It’s dispiriting to watch this as someone that has been a fan of his work from the days of My Beautiful Launderette in such a frail state. He was always exuberant, boisterous, an envelope pusher in all the right ways, and even in recent years, he had this controlled indomitable vibe about him particularly when discussing literature. He’s barely 70, I hope to see him make a full recovery.
Allah bless you with soonest recovery !!!..... our prayers for you !!!...
He's such a strong and passionate man ! May he get well soon !
That's the strongest he'll ever be. Strength is a parent to suffering. Hold on tight Hanif!! 😢
What a way to face life itself. Love you Hanif ❤
Much love and luck to Mr Kureishi, his partner and his family, I'm such a huge fan of his writing, I cannot begin to imagine how tough it is physically and mentally but I am willing you on Hanif! x

And every soul shall walk through it's door.
Good luck x
Loved this guy’s fiction. Wished he’d taken better care of himself in his latter years. Likewise Amis.
Chapeau to the Victor Frankl style humor !
❤
What kind of fall did he suffer, that caused this huge amount of damage to him-??
👍
May you make a full recovery, inshallah. Please learn about prophet Ayyub( pbuh) for inspiration. Indeed, adversity has touched me, and you are the Most Merciful of the merciful.” Surah Anbiya Ayat 83
Every soul shall taste death.

Wishing you well Hanif. I read your blog in South Africa and include you in my prayers. You are brave and strong and find yourself with a great opportunity to draw close to your soul. Try to see the hardship as a blessing. I know it’s easy for me to say. I wish you strength and the knowledge that there is a divine design back of all suffering and sorrow. Thank you for your raw and honest sharing. With love from the Cape of Good Hope, Merle Levin
