The government has put the UK on what it hopes will be a path to becoming a world leader in the fight against smoking-related diseases. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
It has introduced its Tobacco and Vapes bill that will mean that the legal age people can buy cigarettes will be raised by one year every year, so anyone born after 2009 will never legally be sold cigarettes.

This government does all the things we didn't ask it to do, and none of the things we asked it to do.
they know It'll never pass but they need something bang on about in the future that costs nothing
The one thing the public really want is a general election.
Actually no. You voted for it. The UK has been on its way to a nanny state for some time now. Your penal colony is even more advanced than you in that regard. Don’t take this as an insult. I’m American and we’ve become an international embarrassment. Sure makes you wonder how so many countries suddenly became liberal dictatorships simultaneously, no? Cheers
They are foreigners ...unelected ..and Unaccountable to the British people ..!!
Speak for yourself... it is very rare for a piece of legislation to do extreme good with zero harm to a country, and a full ban on smoking is one of those rare cases. It makes air cleaner and healthier for zero cost. Zero. Even tax revenues will be unaffected since ex-smokers will inevitably find other things to spend their money on. You live in absolute la-la land if you don't agree with this policy 100%.
Perhaps people wouldn’t smoke/drink as much if the government weren’t working their absolute hardest to make everyone feel as miserable and restricted as possible. How about educating the public and letting them make their own decisions? But personal autonomy isn’t the British way really.

Hard drugs are easy to consume in secret. But if you smoke in a city, good luck trying not to have anyone notice. You don't need a trained dog to notice if someone's smoked over the last 24 hours, or if someone's smoking within a mile's radius, or if someone has ever smoked in their apartment.

What about a ban on everyone in the 5th richest country in the world doesn't go hungry!!! Think on that!!!
A ban on homelessness would be good and the only money we would need to do this is the money used for treating it's symptoms.
But a ban on homelessness and hunger isn't sexy.
If you banned hunger/homelessness in the same sense then it would act to persecute people for being homeless or not providing enough food for their kids etc. you’d need it to be a slightly different way to achieve that. Like adopting the models they have in Finland with plenty of social support systems, but the Tory government aren’t going to do that. They will keep reducing taxes and national insurance and run the nhs and social security support systems into the ground so badly they’ll not recover, then we’ll end up like the USA, even richer but the money will all be with even fewer people who stand to gain from others poverty.
I thought on it and it doesn't make any sense grammatically.

Smokers cost the nhs much more than they pay in, genius.
I don’t believe 17 billion is spent on the small amount of smokers in this country.
Ban bans.
A fart ban is needed in this smelly land.
I smoked for 16 years. I quit almost 9 years ago. Smoking has gone down a lot since I started and I’m glad that the prevalence is going down. I smoked for a year and tried to quit for 15 until I was successful. It’s an addiction that’s incredibly hard to break. Still, I don’t think that making it illegal to use is a viable solution.
Cos you didnt smoke weed
@@mcfcguvnors I did that towards the beginning. It was legal from age 18. What’s your point?
I found opiate pain pills easier to quit than nicotine
They are not making it illegal to smoke/use. They are making it illegal to be sold to a certain age group, that's not the same thing.
@@garylovell6017 still won't work though They'll get it from somewhere or someone
Awful nanny state move. It's a direct violation of personal choice, and freedom to deny a citizen a legally available product. Once an individual has the facts and still opts to do the activity, that's their choice, and not nanny's.
This is a good thing. Stops big corporations exploiting kids and getting them addicted for profit while still allowing adults who smoke to continue... its a literal win win. I can't see why people are complaining. This is literally a very good thing.
Find it deeply ironic that the UK was founded on revenue from among other things Tobacco 😂😂😂😂
The UK never made a penny from Tabacco.
@garylovell6017 ... the biggest tobacco company in the world... British American Tobacco?!
@@rorynash7042 Yes TOBACCO not Tabacco as all these thick idiots are calling it.

@garylovell6017 I'm dyslexic, so never really go for the spelling jokes, but I see what you've done ;)
I don't smoke, but if I wanted to, and couldn't buy tobacco, I would grow it in my greenhouse.
My cousin grows tobacco in his greenhouse, the rest of the family grow weed 🌱
Does it not smell, do the neighbours know?
@@byroncudworth6918 Rhino air filters - no smell
Finally- an incentive to smoke we can all get behind.
How is this going to be policed?
I was a smoker for more years than I care to mention. Everyone knows the harm of smoking, but taking peoples right away to smoke is outrageous. Smoking is on the decline anyway and has been for years. I used to say, take the revenue from cigarettes to make smokers only hospitals, those hospitals would be state of the art, best in the country. These are all steps to control the masses. China - North Korea - Here we come! Canada is almost there. Cigarettes today, what your allowed to eat tomorrow, what you’re allowed to say the next day, what you’re allowed to think the day after!
people are already getting arrested for words now

While we're at it, why not legalize punching people? And why not tax those punches? Because who cares if you harm other people, right?
I can't see how this would work
It's working in New Zealand. Also cigarette related deaths and cancers and other diseases cost millions is treatment every year too. It also smells bad.
@@JamJam0189 Apparently smoking is estimated to cost the NHS £2.5 billion every year. The pros definitely outweigh the cons.
@@JamJam0189 The New Zeland ban was repealed last month.😂😂
It's very simple: 1. The government bans a commodity. 2. The black market steps up to meet the demand. 3. ???? 4. Uh...

They say we shouldn't tax big business as that will ruin the economy yet British American Tabacco is close to the top of the FTSE100, I guess the tories are showing that maybe we can reduce their finances a bit, well in this case a lot...
The enjoyment of a cigarette is one of life's great pleasures. Hands off smoking pleasure!
Much though I hate smoking I'd love to see them try to enforce it - for generations most smokers have probably started long before the legal age.
"Nanny says NO !" Blatant Age discrimination. Someone needs to challenge under the Equalities Act 2010.
Well let them ban it, they will only be signing the party's death warrant.
They like fine wine so no chance of banning alcohol , like the ER on a Friday night is always busy with rowdy smokers
I guess im gonna become a traveling cig merchant
I dont agree with the basis of this bill because its unconstitutional in who it is applied to. It contains and encourages age discriminaton
Which constitution would that be?
