  • Mental health issues have been ignored in this country for years and rather than spend resources on helping these people lead fulfilling, lives they are locked up and ignored. It says all you need to know about a government by how they treat their most vulnerable. Disgusting.

  • As a person with a learning disability, I see this as the most disgusting way to treat people. All we are asking the NHS is to take the millions spent on keeping people imprisoned and pay more to those who are trying to help us. The waiting time to get help is now 3 years, and they have stopped taking any more patients due to this. I am on antidepressants with diagnosed ADHD and GAD.

  • As a mother of autistic children this to me is unfathomable. My son is mine, I've raised him, fought for him when all the specialists gave up and told me they'd never walk, talk or be able to have a normal life. My boys do it all now, yes the asd causes issues bit i work with them to understand why, how to manage and support them in doing it. The schooling system for sen kids is vile, my son was filmed naked by another kid while naked and changing for swimming, he was left unattended by staff that were meant to be with him every minute but they failed.... That video was distributed, my son bullied and tried to hang himself on school grounds was kicked out, permanently excluded apparently under safeguarding. The kid that filmed my son was also 11yrs old, same age but he'd distributed the video. When my son was kicked out, that boy was kept in the school for more than 2yrs after.

    • Autism is not a mental health condition 😅 seriously educate yourself. There is a genetic disposition to autism. 90% of my family has autism. It's gone from generation to generation. You cannot cure it. Just manage it. If you seen the stats for how young people die with autism or the sexual abuse or domestic violence they suffer from, you might realise they fight every day to stay alive. I know I do. This is coming from someone who also suffers a lot from chronic physical health issues who nearly died. Suffering is suffering. I'm sorry that you suffer too.

      @ageautistic6957@ageautistic6957Ай бұрын
    • @@ageautistic6957very well said. I've never met anyone with ASD that has not also had physical difficulties too, often pretty severe. Unfortunately gut problems go hand in hand with ASD (I have Chrones Disease), and I think it's about a third have epilepsy - many of whom won't get the privilege of driving. I also hope OP well. However, few people are born with heart conditions & high blood pressure that prevent them living a normal life. Mostly heart conditions, high blood pressure etc come with age, in comparison to ASD which is lifelong, and dare I say it, some older people would not be suffering with their heart or high blood pressure if they had looked after their health. I've more sympathy for someone with ASD who is locked up and living half a life, than a 55 year old bloke who has had his freedom and youth, is married with kids, smokes 50 a day, drinks, is obese and then complains when he has high blood pressure.

Utter nonsense, there was a big documentary on tv serveral years ago about a place called Winterbourne View it flagged up loads of abuse that was happening there. Things like people being trapped under chairs while staff sat on the chair laughing. One lady was shut outside in soaking wet clothes. The gov promised then to close long stay secure units, but it didn’t happen and I’m not surprised that they won’t meet this target either.

  • This inflammatory report misses out a lot of the processes involved in long-term care. It's not just one signature on a paper and you're serving a life sentence. There is more input from other services other than just the NHS, ie social care services, the Courts and the councils. Is the person vulnerable to exploitation financially, sexually or emotionally? Do they have the understanding to make decisions for their own welfare? Do they have a safe place to go to? AIs the person a risk to themselves or others. How many times have you read in the newspaper of some person with a learning disability being subjected to violent abuse, murdered or exploited, ie Lacey Fletcher left to die by her parents. Life in reality is more involved than just opening the door and pushing vulnerable people out.

  • Could they be let into the community? People who are the most vulnerable, particularly adults, can pose a risk to themselves but also others. Yes I understand it’s bad to be hospitalised but I don’t believe the women saying “more often than not” … that lady they have in the crash pad seems okay but there are others who would be nowhere near that level of functionality. That’s why she got out. If those families can’t manage them then it’s wrong to release them into the community. End of story.

    @alanna4858@alanna4858Ай бұрын
    • But if the right supports were put in place they could manage, these people are not stuck in there because they have committed crime’s it’s simply that they have a learning disability.
