Hello everybody! Today I'm showing you the recipe for a much-requested dish: Budae-jjigae a.k.a "Army Base Stew." It's a spicy, savory, Korean-American fusion dish made from an umami-rich broth, Korean hot pepper paste, flakes, kimchi, and American Spam, beans, and sausage.

  • Wow!!I made it earlier!! I hadn't dried anchovy and dried mushrooms, instead I putted 4 big mushrooms and some fish sauce. In the rest I putted all ingredients. It was delicious!! Thank you. Next time I will try Korean Beef soup!

  • In my opinion, the aspect that distinguishes Maangchi from other KZhead cooks is that she doesn't only show you a dish - she introduces you to an experience. It's not just the preparation or the presentation, but the world around the dish. Thanks, Maangchi.

  • My grandfathers were in the Korean War and WW2 before that and Budae Jjigae pretty much was invented during and after the Korean war and they both told me because food was so scarce that it could be made any which way. Thank you so much maangchi for putting this up

    • budaejjigae is not junk food in korea. it s very nutritious and healthy. the food has very korean history. when korean war happned, korea ppl didnt have food to feed themselves so US army gave their sausage"spam" to korean ppl. koreans made it food with their own way. That is Budaejjigae. budaejjigae is very super lovely food in korea and has live history that korean ppl wanted to feed their family even in war

  • Just made this for dinner following the recipe in your cookbook! Absolutely delicious, I added sautéed mushrooms and it was really good. However I did boil the pork belly before hand like you did in the video which made it really juicy. I must admit my family and I’s spice tolerance is nowhere near yours haha, I could only use a quarter of the gochugaru so it was more of an orange color, but still plenty spicy and delicious! Thanks so much!

  • I didn’t like this dish when I was a kid living in Korea - thanks to my idiot cousin who told me the individually wrapped American cheese was made of cow poop 🤣🤣 But as an adult, I ❤️it not only because it’s delicious but because of the history behind it. I love that American soldiers shared their army base food supplies with the locals and combining our two beautiful cultures together we made this delicious dish. ❤️❤️❤️ I am forever grateful to all the American and Korean soldiers who fought to protect Korea and Koreans. Thank you! And thank you Maangchi for always sharing your amazing dishes!

  • hi maangchii :) i first started watching your videos during my first years of highschool so i could learn to cook when my parents werent home and years later i just made your budae jigae recipe while i take a break from writing my microbiology notes for university (using kimchi i learned to make from you :D) no idea how often comments left on older videos get seen by creators these days but its nice that i got to have my culinary learning experience shaped by such a kind and talented lady :)
