Restoring The Original Château Windows. Ep 24

Bonjour à tous.
This week at the château, Terry tackled one of the original windows of the front of the château, but as no work has been done in the château for over 40 years a lot of the windows are in a bit of a sorry state. With crumbling wood, missing glass and no paint he has a lot of work on he’s hands.
The first window which will be restored will be the front third floor dormer as a trial run to follow the process on many more throughout the château and to get the third floor ready for winter.
Plus, we finally get to see the first radiator completed in ash’s spray booth along with the window latch fully restored and see if it is the colour Terry wanted.
And If you would like to join us on our family journey restoring this once abandoned château, then please just follow the link below, 🥰

ABOUT US,
We are a family from the North-East of England following our dream to restore a beautiful abandoned french Château. We discovered the heart stopping Château De Lalacelle in summer of 2020, this beautiful architectural monument Is set in the countryside of North-West France.
The moment we visited the Château we all fell in love, from the beautiful sweeping landscape and forests, to its stunning untouched interiors and magnificent spiral staircase in the turret.
Unfortunately Château De Lalacelle has been abandoned for a number of decades so will need a lot of restoration and DIY.
Please subscribe and follow our families journey, with the up’s and down’s in moving from the UK to rural France and restoring this beautiful building to its former glory.

  • I know that i’m repeating myself but I must say that all of you are doing a quality of work that shows how much you love this wonderful old home. She must be the happiest old girl in France to have you lot come into her life just when she was about to give up. You folks are doing better work than a hired man would do at any price because you really care and the pride in your efforts shows and will stand with you for ages. Bravo!

  • Hi Terry, nice job on the glazing. This is quite a difficult job and it looks like you have quickly gained some good skills with this process. In our 18th Century Presbytere all the windows were like your Dormer window. It took me 4 months of solid work to strip, paint and glaze them all. From my torturous experience. here are a few tips that might help you. I believe the Dormer window you were working on can be easily removed so you could work on it laying flat on a pair of tressels. Old French window hinges normally are in two pieces (one part screwed to the window and the other part screwed to the frame. Then, either a removable pin is knocked in to join the two elements, or one of the elements is fitted with a male pin and this inserts into the female element attached to the frame. As is often the case, the French have evolved a better system than the English. By removing the window, all sides can be accessed for stripping. Regarding painting the windows, the wood found in these old neglected windows can be very porous and dry. I did find applying the paint straight from the can did not create a long-lasting finish - after 18 months the paint started to delaminate. After that, I watered down the first few coats so that the paint could penetrate the wood and get a good grip on the surface. Regards painting in general, recently I have discovered Linseed Oil paint. This has an excellent reputation and like lime mortar is the old fashioned way of doing things, but really works. Check out this video:kzhead.info/sun/isxsm8x9eJ6FoY0/bejne.html. I highly recommend this product. If you do elect to use Linseed paint, before painting the frame and window it might be a good idea to give the wood a coat of linseed oil which will penetrate the wood and provide some really good protection. With regard to glazing the windows and the use of putty. It is important to work the putty before you use it (I know you did mention this in the video). The more you work it, the easier it will be to apply. I suggest you buy some linseed oil and when you finish the final mitres, dip the blade in some linseed and you will achieve a much better finish. With regard to repairing damaged wooden window frames, the hardener you used is very effective, I have used it many times with success. Regards filler, I would suggest a two-part product that is epoxy based. Normal water-based fillers tend to delaminate after a while. French windows do sometimes have intricate profiles where the window joins the frame. When repainting the window it is important to strip off most of the old paint on these surfaces otherwise the depth of the paint will stop the window from closing properly. Regards acquiring new glass, most Brico shops will cut and supply, however, on a job this big, I would suggest you buy it in large sheets and cut it yourself to size. Glass is easy to cut. Good luck with the rest of the glazing. Lester Pulsford.

  • Terry, I’m an antique firearms restorer and if you want to save the mullions dividing your window glass that have become rotten and weak because they’ve lost some of the original wood you can mix a waterproof resin with a small amount of the sawdust from your sanding and build up your mullions a layer at a time and then sand them back to your original dimensions. You’ll be amazed at the strength you can add and will be able to save your original windows.

  • Another KZhead channel -- It's a Wonderful Life -- found a quick and easy way of stripping off the layers of paint on the window/door mechanisms by using a wood stove. I cannot remember which video it was in but you can email Peter and Anna. I realize you are using a mask to sand the old windows but look into bloodwork to measure any lead levels. Bloodwork is frequently used in US remediation companies to insure their employees are not getting lead poisoning. Your family's work ethic is amazing and it shows on how the property is coming along.

  • I love that you all have your own projects but are all working together. You have your own little community. I loved the view from the top of the stairs. Xx ( l love painting too and for the same reason. Not sure if I love the prep work quite so much tho ) the radiators and window fittings are lovely.

  • Pain staking work but what a wonderful job. I do think the rose gold/copper radiators will sit very well in the Chateau. Have a wonderful week...and to all xx

  • I am SO thrilled to hear that you respected the bees. Even if you do need a special licence for removal of them, that doesn't always keep people from "dealing with them" in horrible toxic ways. How wonderful to hear that you have simply integrated them and hope to have hives on the property. Makes my bee loving heart sing! 🥰

  • Having done renovation myself it seems like everything takes forever but now we can see the hard work on the windows. Keep on and each window is closer to your goal! Well done everyone!

  • Hi everyone, great work on the window Terry, & Ash did a wonderful job painting the window hardware, which is beautiful, I believe that type of hardware is called a crémone bolt. Thank you for sharing, loving the chats at the end, sounds like so much progress is being made. Take really good care of yourselves, stay safe. Much love Kathy x (Ontario, Canada)

  • Great video. The transformation of the window is just so visually pleasing. The color choice for the closing mechanism is perfect. It stands out nicely, but is not garish. It looks so classy with the white window. You really did a good job Terry. So glad you showed us. All that being said I think it is the radiator that nearly steals the show. With the dark wood... It is a great pairing combination. You and Ash are really excelling at some of these skills you are picking up. I hate to reiterate, but your drone shots are really stellar. The music choices correlated so well with the video, and the nature shots are some thing I really enjoy every video. Once again well done all. Thanks for sharing.
