"Children's false control of nature's law.
Beasts of night now a forgotten folklore.
A second star to shine all their flaws
When the last sunset falls they are no more."
Hiyaa!!! I hope you like my first ever original animation. I've got some stuff planned about it. So if this goes successful. I might do a second Kuneho animation ^^

  • I absolutely LOVE that we filipinos are getting a really good presentation of our culture thanks to SAD-ist who is a filipino herself. The backgrounds are so gosh darn accurate and I’ve seen some mythological creatures that i’m familiar with such as tikbalang, kapre and more. I love every frame and details you put into this SAD-ist! Like I could never 😩 With that aside, Typhoon Odette is no joke and its straight up traumatizing, and i’m glad to know that people who got affected by it will somehow get the help they need.

  • I’m a filipino, and I want to explain everything in this animation here. Kuneho is Bunny in tagalog which explains the designs of the characters. And the lore behind this is based on an old Philippine folklore, I think the monsters are based on the “Aswang” the most famous philippine mythical creature, which is a monster that is a vampire and a wolf combined together that can shapeshift and disguised as a human being. There was this one old filipino movie where there was a traitor amongst the village which is an aswang disguised, but I could be wrong. The monsters could be a mananaggal, but they only target pregnant women I think. The world building of the city is based on sari sari stores and poor homes stacked together. I don’t know if the symbols are from igorot tattoos or from another filipino tribe. And I want to say that this is the best animation comparing to the filipino tv shows and animations from GMA ngl. I hope to see more on Kuneho.

Just that little detail made me have chills of how intelligent those things are.

  • Fun fact: The language used in this absolutely ASTONISHING animation is called "Baybayin", which is a very old Filipino script that no one uses anymore, so it's so cool to see it being used in such an amazing animation made by an equally amazing person! Also, at 4:20 the symbol on the top left translates to ko/ku, bottom translates to ne/ni, and the top right translates to ho/hu. If you put them together, you'll get "Kuneho" which is Tagalog for rabbit.

  • First off, the animation is austounding, second: I think the first monster introduced that had wings was probably a manananggal. Shapeshifters that discard their lower half at night to hunt, while blending in during daylight. The second ones, the ones that crawl are probably aswangs, or ghouls that shapeshift aswell, but can only hunt during night since they burn in daylight. The creature surrounded by the trees on the first seconds of the vid might be a kapre, not sure about the goat man with a spear so... the person shown in the last section might be a shaman, or an amulet(agimat) holder, perhaps even a (trece) or warriors who fight against the dark forces in phillipine mythology, the emphasis on the moon, means that its the time when these creatures come out, cause filipinos have a belief if the moon is full and bright yellow, the darkness is at its peak, hence why the monsters come out, anyways thats all I know, amazing animation, Mabuhay! Edit: I just read from another comment that the words from the mask head is read tikbalang which is a half man half horse creature in the phillipines, so it wasn't a goat mask at all lol.

You can feel the story and lore leaking from every frame, the magic and otherworldly atmosphere pulling me into the animation like nothing else. The smoothness of it, the care that was evidently put into it, and the unimaginable amount of time and effort that was clearly put into this blows me away. I know absolutely nothing about this world, but with the display of this animation alone, all I can think about is scouring the internet for more information; homebrewing monsters and bosses into my dnd campaigns; writing stories inspired by the insane amount of characterisation shown through body language; and perhaps most of all: the indescribable amount of inspiration that this ineffable animation has filled me with, and the urge to create. Thank you.

    • I think it's based on the monsters here in the Philippinesbcalled "aswang". They look and act human in the morning but turn into monsters at night which makes one rabbit turning into a worm make sense. There are different types of "aswangs" but the first one we saw is a Manananggal. (SAD-ist might've got inspiration there). It detaches its lower and upper half making it harder to hunt. Their upper body is winged while their lower body is hidden in the forest. They are mostly female and they feast on unborn babies. You can kill them by putting salt/sand on their lower half. Not entirely sure if she got direct inspiration but that was the first thing I thought of when watching it.

(1:35) Diwata - are fairy muses that lives in trees, believed to be harmless unless you did something to them which believed to give curses. (2:06) Manananggal - are bat-like creatures that can separate their body and only their upper half will wander around flying, it is believed that the only way to defeat it is by attacking the lower half, which shown in the video. (2:32) At this point i don't know the others but i may recognize them by their appearance. The horse-like creature who casted the spell under the tree may be: Tikbalang - a horse-like creature that is believed to mislead travelers from the right path, and in other beliefs, they give you hallucinations and it may be the reason why the Kuneho Characters experienced the ground sinking and changing of locations. (2:59) The shadow creature shown while the characters hide behind the couch, might be: Sigbin - are rat-dog like creatures that hunts at night to suck blood of humans, they can turn invisible from other creatures and humans. (2:50) The character shown in the last part could be: Babaylan - a shaman, which believed to have access to good and evil forces/creatures, and widely known to have the ability to talk with these creatures, they're like a priest in the old days. (4:40) Thats the only i can explain.

  • I also love how accurate the settings and tools that the characters use are to The Philippines. The Dense Forests, The "Golok" Machetes, The Old Twisty Lanterns, The Bamboo Spears, The Small Streets of an (Abandoned) Urban City. It just reminds me of home and the stories My Grandpa used to tell me. Of course, it's a given if you know about SAD-ist's nationality. But it's still amazing if you count the tiny details, the fluid frames of the animation, the clear [2:28] emotions of the characters' faces who didn't even speak a word in this animatic. Truly wonderful. She's gonna go a long way, I just know it. We're all rooting for ya, SAD-ist. _Dream SMP or not._ Edit : I'm a goddamn idiot, I edited my heart away. SAD-ist, if you see this. Please heart me back, I'm desperate :(

    • I found her through her DBH and Hamilton phases and it was just so easy to tell she has a great future ahead of her, she's incredibly skilled at a lot of things and just incredible at story telling! I'm really glad her DSMP phase gave her the attention she deserves :D

  • As a south-east asian (indonesia), the thrill I got from watching this really went through my spine. Seeing more representation on south-eastern cultures is amazing to see. Once again Sad you manage to shock everyone with your skills that you hone and sharpen. I'm amazed how much lore there is impacted within this original animation. I actually had to look at twitter from filo users to see what the main inspirations are and it's so clear you put so much from your own culture within this master piece. I personally can't wait to see more of Kuneho and more original animations that you may have planned.
