Are Thoughts The Source Of Ego?

Is the ego the source of our thoughts or are our thoughts generated elsewhere and passed through the ego? The ego arises out of the state of identification with thought. The moment of freedom arises when we realize that we are not our thoughts-rather, we are the awareness.

  • why is this not a subject taught in school? If we were taught to embrace this Self Awareness and Self Realization from the cradle, we would not be strangers to ourselves as we are today. and by the time we became adults we would have an awareness of ourselves and of others that would enable us to truly advance as a species.

    • +daisyroots I highly recommend reading The Evolution of Consciousness series of books by Endall Beall if you want some hard insight into spiritual advancement without all the mystical nonsense being peddled on such a mass scale. I found these books to be hard hitting, truthful, relevant and they contain workable tools to help people truly advance their cognitive awareness without the reliance on mystical riddles and spiritual misdirection.

  • The mind constantly has thoughts going through it, and the thoughts that the self aligns itself with make up the ego. The ego is actually not a bad entity. It is when you are dominated by your ego that you become rigid as a human being. In other words, you must not be your thoughts, but rather, you have to try to be a self that has thoughts and chooses consciously which ones to align itself with.

  • 6 months of expensive psychotherapy created a brief illusion (due to the attention and drama) that I was over my mental illness. Then Christmas came and I sank lower in depression than ever before. Then I met a musician who recommended 'The Power of Now' and for the price of £6 my whole life was explained and I understood for the first time the whole picture. Now my mind is calm and I'm content with my existence. Wonderful stuff!

    @therobbiethorpe@therobbiethorpe13 жыл бұрын
  • I have developed a thought pattern in my head that recalls past events and then swears at me and insults me - it's feels, perhaps, like the early stages of schizophrenia. Today I was readng 'Power of Now' and it says to observe this 'entity', don't fear it, judge it or fight it because that will make it stronger. "The pain body, which is the dark shadow cast by the ego, is actually afraid of the light of your consciousness. It's survival depends on your unconscious identification with it...[it] may seem to you like a dangerous monster that you cannot bear to look at, but... it is an unsubstantial phantom that cannot prevail against the power of your presence." Now I'm looking forward to it rearing it's ugly head again, I'm gonna take a good look at it rather than running away from it.

    • Also know that you can always choose to see the origin of the thought. Is the thouhgt yours in the first place? Probably it isn't. No reason to choose terrible thoughts. So you could return it to where it came from. We are not children anymore who like a sponge suck up every word people tell us. We should learn to be adults who see, hey, that is not my thought but my fathers/mothers/brothers/sisters/teachers/partners words or who ever had an strong influence in our lifes. Practise saying this often: I did not choose this thought so return to sender, bye, bye.

  • Those with extreme egos are what one would consider a 'know-it-all', they both project and view everything according to their belief system and they are very rarely wrong in their eyes because they choose what to reject and accept based on their own perception, meaning they are sincerely closed-minded and trapped by their thoughts. With that in mind, it would depend upon the person's belief system whether they felt they could teach a less egotistic person their beliefs, or felt superior to them.

  • This sums me up pretty accurately. It's difficult for me to relate and interact with people socially, which makes me feel isolated and lonely; therefore I (the ego) tell myself that I must be weird, strange or ugly, which is why people dislike me, or dislike interacting with me. In fact it may just be that my overcautious ego is stifling my energy. 😔

  • Pfahaha I bursted into laughter when he said that problems are self-generated towards the end. First time I hear of someone who thinks that very same way and doesn't just deny the work of the own mind in the creation of problems - very nice experience. What is needed to solve a problem? A problem. But what would the world be without an everlasting up and down? It would remain silent without any possibility for an individual to grow at the fruit of life. I came here to listen, so here is my reaction to what I listened: Funnily enough that the ego itself is a thought. It is rather stunning that we use the term ego as ego means "I". By doing so we distinct a part of our self. Why is that so funny? Because we define the ego as part of our self we can give the blame to why we feel bad or why we suffer. Yet, it is an integral part of I since I is pure awareness and pure awareness/attention is the door to reality. By giving attention to something, this something comes to life in that it is integrated into our very own reality. But if I say I, "I" is/am more than pure consciousness, more than a feeling I feel, the thought I think, the impression I have and so on. I am that conscious part, yet driven by unconscious powers in an environment by that these powers and my consciousness again are influenced. And even that would never do right to describe me. The perceiving organ is always blind to itself and so am I blind to my self. First step to let go: accept it. And by accepting it there is no reason to let go of it anymore. And by that the self-created problem goes "poof". Acceptance again can only be achieved by pure honesty towards oneself. And by being purely honest one can simply listen and see what this world actually wants to tell you so hard, you can close it and yourself into your heart with all this self defined evil and good. But then again as Tolle said that if I say how the world is, I actually mean how I experienced it to be. And what words would ever be able to describe an experience as they would only depict a long gone past.

  • The majority of the time though, the extreme ego (its thoughts) always feels superior to those of a more modest, humble stature and selfless approach to life, because the ego is deeply selfish in regards to the image it identifies itself with.

  • Even the idea of "self" is a thought. All experience is based on knowledge. What's an ego? It's just a word. "You" are nothing more than a collection of memories, knowledge, experiences based upon knowledge & interpreted through the filter of that knowlege, that includes, education, culture, indoctrination, family, societal values, etc. Even the slightest thought appears to be separation & thus comes loneliness, emptiness, duality, fear, and then the inventions of spirit, gods, after life, etc.

  • I think it means we pick up and store these negative thoughts via the filter of the ego (because it helps define who we are, which the ego is constantly trying to do). We perceive an event, which in reality is neither good or bad, but our mind or ego, defines it as negative. The event is actually neutral, it is the ego, through the need to define things, which perceives the event as negative.

  • Yes, thinking thoughts are not the problem it is the negativity that you attach to which your are to see, acknowledge where they came from to let them go. I practiced doing this through a negative childhood. But more importantly in 1975 I was 19 while traveling on the High Speed Line into Philadelphia, I saw just how it was my 'job' to exorcise the infiltrating negative thoughts that my father and the environment I was living was dumping on me and would process every morning riding the train.

    @BestAtNothing@BestAtNothing11 жыл бұрын
    • As Eckhart Tolle says: thoughts are just the content of your awareness. You are not what you watch, you are the watcher. Thus you need to stop identifying with your inner TV program. Ideally you switch off the TV set altogether to view reality as it is.

    • I am an observer and a doer, in this moment. The doing includes generating thought and expressing myself. The memory, judgements and plans about what happens in my life is part of my ego. Without an ego, I would not know who I am or what I am doing. Survival would be very tenuous. So honestly, I don't know how a I could live without a healthy ego. But my ego has caused most of my problems in life, I believe. It can induce anxiety, depression, anger and other bad things. These feelings accompany the thoughts that the ego is processing. What was missing was the understanding that those negative emotions are signals. They were telling me and continue to tell me to wake up. I don't need to dwell on negative thoughts What I think about is a choice I can make.

  • If you want to not only understand ego and get past it and move into a higher state of cognitive awareness I highly recommend The Evolution of Consciousness series of books by Endall Beall. I found these books on Amazon and I'm glad I did. The ego is a program that overlays human consciousness and keeps us all enslaved under a limited world of perceptions. There is a great difference between ego identity and spiritual self identity.

  • I believe the ego is what separates the true self from the singularity (the collective consciousness). I've done ayahuasca and was shown the ego keeps us separated from the divine truth, we are all God. The body (everything) is the temple the spirit of God lives in. We are God experiencing itself through many view points, collecting experiences in order to enjoy the the world God created.

  • I don't understand the English pronounce very well, but Eckhart speaking makes it easy to do, probably the attention he gives to the words makes his pronounce sounds soft to the ears; I accompany. Very good teaching!

  • This is pretty awesome, I love this guy so much. I love this lady for being so honest, and it's Friday, so this means I get to sleep in tomorrow. I also enjoy kimchi and broccoli haha. Seriously, those two are an epic super food combination.

  • I think he's recognizing the little voice in our head. I had a transformation experience that lead me to the conclusion that my mind is a computer and can be programmed accordingly. the transformation was the computer is now conscious that it is a computer.

  • I think people with anxiety, especially public anxiety and depression related problems could definitely take something from this, the veil view of the world in which he spoke about was so true and also the mind generated problems-all fueled from believing our thoughts and identifying with them. So simple yet you need someone to tell this to you!

  • I understand what Eckhart is talking about, because I have began to experience it myself. The difference between Eckhart's teachings and a concept is that a concept relies on empirical evidence and further analytical thought -- as is the case with philosophy. When you enter a state of being that is conscious awareness, or gnosis to use the Gnostic term, you quite often find that the correct answer about a situation comes to you without any thinking at all.

  • The reason Eckhart Tolle is so successful is because he has literally helped changed people's lives for the better, which means that his teachings rprovide something that mainstream psychology/psychiatry hasn't provided to satisfy their clients' needs.

  • You are IDENTIFYING with your experience, which is one of the things Eckhart warns people of. YOU are not your experiences. You HAVE experiences. And when you change what you believe about things (and/or yourself) your experiences also change But even so, YOU still experience, but are still not what you experience.
