Many activities can serve as portals to presence, but we must be careful not to become dependent upon them.

  • I have been playing violin for about 22 years. When I got to music school I improved tremendously, but at the same time I hit huge mental barriers and crippling self doubt. Sometimes I couldn't even practice because my thoughts and memories would always get in the way. I started depending heavily on THC, Caffeine and Nicotine to help me block out the thoughts that hindered me. Sometimes the thoughts got so bad that I came close to attempting suicide. The ego has to be the biggest barrier of all for a musician. I hope that once I overcome the ego, my practice can be more meditative. In fact, according to the teachings of Tolle, I need to overcome the Ego NOW, and not just put it off to do some later day. Thank you Mr. Tolle inspiring me to keep going, and to be present as I practice and perform.

  • I think its best not to take anything he says too literally. He uses words, as he often states as "pointers" to the truth, and the truth that he points to which is beyond words is in the realm of no thought, no content, no thing. It is the space in which everything occurs, again only words. That is why he is advising people not to use anything external as a crutch for presence. He is not saying it is bad, just not to rely on it as ultimately there will be a point where you will have to let it go

  • The rhythm of music can put you in the present moment. Same with dancing. Same with any activity. Positive lyrics can put you in a positive spirit or state of consciousness. All is One unity of life force... Presence.

  • My take on this is that music contains meaning which precedes or predates language. We understand or take in the meaning contained in music without having to translate it into words first. Before we could speak we knew the basic meanings of natural sounds - e.g. the anger or threat contained in the roar of a tiger and the beauty contained in birdsong. When we listen to music we bypass the language circuits in the thinking mind and this can be a great help in becoming present. Then we can turn the music off and remain present as Eckhart says. Love these videos - they are a great help.

  • So lovely and so true. I also find myself falling into the listening of music and for brief times in my life rising above the need for it. It's worst when I listen to so much of it that it gets stuck in my head and at that point becomes even as a crutch, making it far more difficult to return to silence, stillness and presence.

    • +PS couldn't agree more, music is a huge stimulus and too much of it creates a mind overload and mental echo that can be quite a 'crutch' as you nicely put it. A little music can be okay from time to time but every day and listening to hours and hours of it every day rather leaves us in a hypnotic state of consciousness.

  • The cream is the fullness and the semi skimmed milk is the watered down version, its just a comparison to give you some sort of understanding as to the beauty and fullness of what he experiences within himself. You have to remember in what context he was referring to movies, there are movies that energise and reinforce the pain body like violent films. There are also films as well as music that take you into presence. He is just saying don't rely on them as ultimately presence comes from within.

    • ***** Poor fellow. Being ignorant of what others are discussing should lead a reasonable and intelligent adult towards educating themselves concerning it. Perhaps you should research Vedic philosophy to improve your basic understanding of the comment that confused you.

    • Rob Knaapen "You are the friend of all because of your merits. A good person embellished with good thoughts becomes the friend or benefactor of all. Such a person influences others, because of his positive personality traits and attracts them and as a result, he befriends all." - Rig Veda Brother, why be so eager to hurl judgement on Tolle? He denied nothing, he simply spoke of his own method of reflection and gradual re-immersion. Such negative accusations are unfitting of one familiar with satchidānanda.

      @provanost@provanost9 жыл бұрын
    • It's amazing how you have projected your need to impress and attempt to enlighten others towards a total stranger such as myself! It's equally impressive that you apparently have the ability to see the degree of another persons enlightenment via a KZhead comment. Obviously you do not, and you also do not see that referring to the vein of this discussion, inspired by a video by a man steeped in Buddhist and Vedic philosophy - Tolle, as "gobbledegook", is just plain sad. I am a person of Vedic heritage and I feel that it is relevant to quote and reference Vedic texts and philosophy when dealing with spiritual subjects derived from those roots. No one is forcing you to watch and comment on videos pertaining to an eastern philosophical subject matter, especially if you see it, as you said, as "gobbledegook".

    • ***** There is nothing to complain about in what provanost said, except that maybe its not 100% comprehensible, but you could have just asked to restate the comment if it really mattered soo much to you. Judging from what you're saying, you're straight up attacking provanost. Its uncalled for.

Bad music with negative lyrics feeds the ego and negativity. Like gangster rap will certainly influence anger. Sad country music will certainly influence sadness. You are putting something in your mind when you listen to music. Just like choosing vegetables over junk food, you would be wise to choose positive music over negative music.

  • Tolle may not have musical talent and does no have the capacity to really appreciate music. I am a musician and experience music on a deep level. I would describe it as being in the distance past yet immediately before me. Also, there are special moments - usually after practicing for several hours, the music suddenly being played through me rather than by me. At the point, I feel connected. As ACIM indicates, relatedness, or connected to other living thing at some level, is our function.
