Eckhart suggests practicing listening in conversation with others, devoting oneself to listening actively 80 percent of the time. Additionally, bringing awareness to the inner feeling of your hands can help to deepen Presence in an everyday situation.

  • Tolle is a genius. His recommendation that the guy listen 80% of the time while speaking 20% of the time is reasonable, but the idea that the guy attend to his hands while listening is brilliant. As a psychologist with over 30 years of experience I always find something useful through Tolle's talks, and this is something I will be able to implement with some of my clients.

  • I'm so grateful that this video was posted! The man expressed my lifelong issue, and I found Mr. Tolle's answers & thoughts to be so helpful & encouraging. As an older person going back to school, I was diagnosed with ADHD, but as a child, I was just considered an annoying troublemaker and often punished for talking in school. I do not want to take meds and found this video to be a God send. After many months of reading the books and watching videos like this one, today I felt an epiphany and am overcome -even as I am typing. Many thanks!!!!

  • Good to remember that ppl with ADHD spectrum brains are very prone to self criticism and self loathing, so more encouragement and acceptance of how one operates is more important than actual 'stillness'. His possible social anxiety might also make him more self critical. More encouragement & micro steps towards mindfulness the key....he took a huge risk by asking, good for him as it gave voice to countless others who think they can never be mindful or present!

  • Be present, conscious and aware, without thinking. "Life moves pretty fast. If you dont stop to check on it once in a while. You could miss it." -Ferris Bueller. Become aware of when thinking is unecessary and when it is necessary. Until then you are on auto pilot. Your reactions, impulses and habits control you, its rooted in identification with thinking and your judgements associated with it. Once you are aware of that, you can break it and make different and or more appropriate decisions, you will enjoy your life more, until the point when you enjoy every moment because you accept the differences and circumstances of the world around you. Not resisting it because you dont agree (peace). We are not truly living our life until we understand this. The understanding is awareness not knowledge.

  • I was very much like this young man, it didn't bother ME, but it did irritate everyone around me, and they told me so. So, I took many years of my life to learn to listen. It didn't come easily; I often left the room to avoid spilling over into someone else's conversation and space. Listening is so much nicer, and now decades later, it is the easiest. People say things that they otherwise wouldn't, if someone else were talking! Imagine that!

  • Best way to quiet your mind is to think of your next thought. The mind will go blank and this will allow you to be very present. If you are a beginner, this will last for 3 to 5 seconds. I've sustained it to last for more than 20 seconds. It takes practice.

  • Mind chatter is just the way the way the ego tries to strengthen itself. Its constantly trying to divide and protect. This is being human, no way of getting around it until you bring presence to it. Our judgments are just feeble attempts at strengthening ourselves to protect ourselves from death. Ask yourself the next time you judge a person for whatever the reason is..why? the answer underneath it all is so the ego can get stronger. The ego is the disease but I think its also the whole purpose of us being here...so we suffer, so we understand the contrast between being at peace on the other side and here feeling alone and divided. There's no defeating fear, anger, sadness, anxiety, depression...there is just presence and acceptance and for me its all about believing that we choose to be here on earth, to learn. No of us are really alone, we just choose to be human to learn, then die and be with those we have loved for ions. Then likes dummies we do it again...and again...and again until finally the ego is no more. What Eckhart teaches has been taught for centuries, he's just simply tapped into it like syrup from a maple tree. The Buddhists have known this for centuries, same with many other cultures.

  • Somewhere along the line we all hear about becoming "free from thought" while we meditate, and it becomes a goal. Often we sit down to meditate and we immediately start thinking: "I hope I don't think too much... what if I think too much? Have I failed? Do I have to start again? I'm really useless compared to other people" etc etc. We turn our body into a stress state, which is the opposite of what we are trying to achieve! I would say to this man to just accept that he thinks, and that maybe sometimes he thinks a lot. And not to be afraid of that; not to make it wrong. Just allow the thoughts to be there, it's ok. You are ok. And the same goes for being chatty, don't make that wrong either. He has overthought it and he's compared himself to others who are quieter and assumed they are somehow "better" than him, and that he needs to be "fixed". If you chat a lot because of anxiety, making chatting wrong will just create more anxiety for you. Allow and breathe. You are not broken, you do not need to be fixed.

    • Also I would suggest that anyone who struggles with sitting quietly meditating, to instead start with doing a craft of some sort. Something that takes deep concentration and while focused on say sewing, or woodwork, to at times bring your attention to your breath and relaxing your muscles as you work.

  • I have the same problem, I have ADD so my mind is always hyperactive and takes over constantly. There are times I can feel this inner energy and I think i'm 'aware' but this doesn't last for long until the mind takes over again and next thing I know days went by while I was unaware. I used to set a timer that went off every hour with a meditation bell, it kinda helped me to stay aware more but over time this bell became less usefull because my hyperactive mind would block it out. Very frustrating, I can totally relate to this person.

    @El_Couch_Potato@El_Couch_Potato6 жыл бұрын
    • veto Corlioni try to disassociate with the mind noise. They are not yours. Don't identify with them. When you see a thought arising, feel it, let it be, feel the emotions it causes, all as an observer, not as the creator. That realization is enough to break any identification with the thoughts. Remember, the life situations are not depressing, the thoughts about them are.
