when i got my kitten i would clip one nail and give him a treat and then let him go. then one paw, then both. now he comes up to me when i have the clipper lol

That’s how I do it too. I start when they are kittens, only clip one or two nails in a sitting, and tell them what a good job they’re doing after each clip. I only clip as many nails as they are comfortable with and then they get a high value treat afterwards, while I tell them how wonderful they are! Starting early is key.
I had a mainecoon cat, basically Matthew McConaughey, cool chill n laid back. Never had an issue cutting nail or baths because he was chillllllll! Now i have an orange cat, basically the tasmanian devil. Cutting just 1 paw is certain death
We just got a male ginger (my favorite) in December as a kitten. He isn’t as crazy as the previous Ginger’s in my life. 😂 he’s a little more skittish BUT he’s really sweet once he trusts you. And he allows me to trim his claws. I’m new to it hence me watching this video. Sometimes I can only do a few at a time

My cat will let me mess with her paws all the time"………until I pull out the clippers. Then it’s a fight to the death. My problem is that my cat loves to go to the vet. She likes the attention and everyone loves her because she is so sweet and friendly. So, $20.00 for a nail trim.

I adopted 3 out of a litter of 6, and took in the last one that wasn’t adopted a couple of months later. I started clipping their nails as kittens. I just use regular nail clippers and treats. I do turn on all the lights and wear reading glasses to make sure I don’t get close to the quick. Now that they’re 8 years old (the last one that wasn’t adopted passed at 6 yrs old 😿) they coming running when I say, “Let’s do your nails!”

been doing this for a while and my cat was getting comfortable with it to the point where i can trim all 4 paws in one go......but after heading to a groomer's, I found out that they cut my cat's claws down to stubs and well into the quick! And of course they told me that I "didn't do it right". Now my cat doesn't want me to touch her paws (she will bite) and I will have to start from square one.

Never take her there again. I’m certain cutting her nails into the quick wasn’t the only thing she endured.

At what length are their nails too long, what is the length they should be clipped and to what length do you clip them? Does it make a difference to what length you clip them for outdoor and indoor cats? My cat loves to climb trees so she needs a good grip.
Hey there! There isn't really any "too long" for a cat's nails, unless your cat is not taking care of themselves and letting them grow back into their paws (an issue sometimes faced by sick/very old cats). Nail clipping benefits us more than it does our cats, and it's really only needed for cats who live inside and tend to poke furniture and people with their claws. In this case, I don't think your cat needs his claws clipped at all.

Short enough that they don’t tap, tap, tap on the floor when they walk. If they get too long, especially the dew claw, it’ll grow into the pad or toe bean. I use a bright light and reading glasses so I can see the pink quick very well and cut close, but not too close, to the quick, probably 1-2 millimeters away from the quick.
I've tried that with these girls and so far, not a lot of success just touching their paws.
Bribery is good too. Either fish-flavor, high protein dry food or the squeezable cat gogurts (churu).
I am not beneath bribery. In fact, it’s the only thing that works! 😹
@@user-ul8hu7bc6l that might work with one of the girls, but the other has always turned down wet food and a number of other potential treats. If I can find dehydration salmon, I'm considering that. Granted, I've only checked a couple places online for it. It's not really in the budget right now.

No, but it can help to make scratching less damaging and can make snuggle time with your cat less painful.
What happens if we don't clip nails forever
In most cases, nothing. Cats scratch objects like scratching posts, logs, and other rough surfaces, helping them to shed the outer layers of the nail. However, some cats' (especially older ones who aren't taking care of themselves) nails grow too long and start curving back into the paw pad.

clipping a cats nails is inhumane as it renders a lot of their hunting capabilities and makes them inferior and vulnerable to other cats
