Detailing a ZL1 Camaro for a week! | Chicago High End Detailing

Status Detail in Chicago performed a extremely intensive detail on this Zl1 Camaro. The car was cleaned for hours and then prepped for days worth of polishing and paint correction. We found multiple sanding marks and removed all of them. Once the paint was dialed into perfection we installed ceramic coatings on everything!

  • Terrific video. I don't mind 30 min videos when the material is well prepared ahead of time and the audio is progressive in techniques and informative with comments on the products being used. Editing is another important issue which was excellent. This video represents everything that I am looking for when I open up a channel and start washing. Thank you.

    • Only a few thousand miles I believe. He had basically just bought it. Sorry not super familiar with that area!! Take a look at reviews and work on Instagram and if they have a KZhead. See what products they use too. If you want something special a smaller company is more likely to deliver that. Big companies can be good to of course but a little bit of the passion is lost when your car is just next on the list for one multiple employees to grab and do the work. Depending on what you want done you can do it in your driveway and I can get you setup with the supplies 👍

  • Nice work subbed. So a car that’s been ceramic sealed, it can’t be waxed? What product do you use on exterior plastics to make it look like it was meant to look and not some cheesy glossy finish?

    @dandorris8531@dandorris85313 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks for the Sub! That means a lot!!! Once you have real ceramic i recommend you use one of three products. Gyeon Cure Carpro Reload Both are great ceramic based sealants! They have around 5% ceramic in the formula and bond to the real ceramic on your car. Polymer based wax will only temporarily bond to your ceramic coating because on a molecular level the ceramic will shed the Polymer based wax after a week or so. Basically it debonds. This is why we are not a fan of bead maker. Its a synthetic Polymer based sealant/wax. Ceramic sealant is designed to bond to ceramic coated services. The third product is gyeon wetcoat. This is s spray and rinse with a pressure washer product. It is amazing and totally touchless. So its fast and does not require friction to install meaning you can't swirl anything out. Thats all available on Statusdetailstore.com Thanks for the great question🙂

  • Looks great! Did the sanding marks come from a previous detailer? All those swirls are from poor washing? The factory paint can’t be that bad.

    @willaerley7140@willaerley71403 жыл бұрын
    • Sanding marks are likely from factory based on the history of car. No body shopped panels. 1 owner. Delivery miles. When dust gets in the paint when its sprayed at the factory you get this unappealing dust nib in the paint. At the factory they take a pneumatic sander and spot sand them out. Sometimes its just literally sand paper. Once its smoothed out they compound that spot to paint correct the sanding marks. They spend a few minutes on this process during the production process. The average car takes around 30ish hours to produce. Every car is different so im not spot on there.... point is I spend that much time JUST doing the detail. So obviously the manufacturer is rushing this step and that's why the car leaves with such a wild looking sanding mark! A telsa I recently did had factory sanding marks but also body shop sanding marks because he was rear ended and had paint work done. The manufacturer sanding mark and body shop sanding mark where very different. Body shop tried to refine it more. But they still didn't fix it completely! Thats why im employed haha. The swirls where mostly from poor washing and some auto car washes the owner used\did. I'm sure the dealer washed it poorly before Delivery too... never let a dealer wash your car! But yes factory paint in general is pretty bad. Especially tesla and often porsche gt cars. This is why all our ceramic packages come with paint correction. We polish and correct every new car🙂👍 Thanks for the two good questions\comments and watching our videos. I really appreciate you checking my content out!

    • I'll be offering a polishing kit on the car care store soon. Sometime over the winter months. The biggest advantage you have is getting the right pad and polish for your kind of paint. The store will be setup with drop downs for porsche paint Chevy paint bmw paint etc. So then you get a kit semi designed for your car. I'll do videos in technical stuff to but man is that a rabbit hole to go down lol. Gm paint tends to be medium to hard. So id recommend something like a mild compound and medium to heavy cut pad if your trying to paint correct. For me that's the green or blue rupes polish... green was discontinued recently so it would be blue and pair with a lake country hdo orange or blue pad. Cross hatch and you will get results. Want a mild polish to enhance gloss and depth? Hdo orange with yellow rupes polish. If you want to get fancy do white rupes jeweling polish with black hdo to jewel/finish Polishing and correction gets very complicated when you dig into the thousands of possibilities and combos to achieve maximum gloss. Hope that helps!!!

  • Ik im really late. But what causes those swirl scratches on the car?

    @ayoant-783@ayoant-78311 ай бұрын
    • Swirl marks come from any kind of friction against your paint. Lubrication will help avoid swirl marks. This means any kind of dust or dirt on a dry towel rubbing across your paint will makes swirl marks. Any kind of dirt in your towel or wash pad will swirl your car out

    • This was awhile ago but usually I put compound on a old microfiber and apply it by hand to the tips. Then I use a less abrasive polish to really shine it up. The compound does a nice job of removing the bad stuff that won't typically come off. You can always start the process during the wash and get the pressure washer close to the tip. It can blow some of the black build up off as well

Once the car is finished being painted there can be imperfections like a spec of dust stuck in the clear coat (paint) and the only way to remove this sort of repainting the entire panel is to sand that defect out and polish it back to perfection. The manufacturer and most body shops tend to not spend enough time on this step so they dont fully remove the the sanding mark they created. Hope that helps!

  • No iron removal or clay?

    @JoeJoe-xl4ef@JoeJoe-xl4ef4 жыл бұрын
    • I don't show every step in videos often because I'm filming solo and it gets really cumbersome! This car received iron remover but I don't usually film that step. Never good to let it dry and when I'm filming its easy to get distracted. Easier to iron x entire car and work methodically. Clay is like going to the ER you don't want to go. Only if you need to. Not every car will need clay. If only very minor stuff is in paint ill opt to use more pads and not clay. Only downside is you load the pad up faster with bad residue that's difficult to blow out... so you change pads. Sometimes and really most times clay is very necessary because polishing won't pull the contamination and will even completely destroy the pad. Its been awhile since I did this car but I don't believe it was clay barred. Basically every car gets some level of iron decon. Hope that helps 🙂👍

    • Depends on the budget and what's important to a customer. Many people don't care. Many people won't ever see a car with wheels off. If we clean the fenders out perfect. They will be dirty again in a month. Because the owners never pull wheels during a wash. Nothing I do will last forever if it's literally never cleaned again ever. Even ceramic doesn't work that way.

    • Great question. Reset by design is intended to restore hydroponics on a previous ceramic coated surface. That does not mean you cant use it as a traditional soap on any car regardless if ceramic. Reset us a excellent car soap simply designed to remove dirt grime and grease off the surface of your paint. It has no additional additives like waxs so it's a ideal soap before paint correction and or ceramic to especially prep the paint for whatever is next. Long story short. Reset works on everything but is designed to be your go to soap on existing ceramic coated surfaces to restore your hydrophobic properties! I hope that made sense!

  • Not too big of a deal since you paint corrected afterwards but the whole rinsing prior instead of foam cannon (assuming your talking about foam cannon for your contact wash) is true but still inferior to a proper pre wash. Its far more effective at removing dirt than just blasting it across the panel with the pressure washer, its also far safer..now if you talking about using the foam cannon for your contact wash then yeah you wanna get as much dirt off prior to contact wash and thats where the high ph pre wash is far more effective than just a rinse beforehand. A simple test is rinse one door with the pressure washer then pre wash the other door with a high ph snow foam, let it dwell for a few mins then rinse then blow dry everything...you'll see how much dirt is still on the panel with just a rinse, its actually staggering but again not that big of a deal if doing paint correction afterwards.

  • I've always heard you start washing from the roof down, because there is less dirt, and work your down. You started on the front end, which is likely one of the dirtiest parts of the car, then went to the hood, then worked your way down to the sides. No wonder there were scratches on the side panels. Not sure I understand your technique.

    @genelassiter2804@genelassiter28043 жыл бұрын
    • Gene i suggest you watch our other videos like the track day clean ups and the newest video regarding proper wash methods. They have the information your seeking. It is best to wash top to bottom. Its even best to use more than one wash pad. A pad specifically for the ditties areas. I talk about this in the mentioned videos above. What im guessing you Don't understand is this is a edited KZhead video. Its rather difficult to film and detail at the same time all by yourself. On occasion I have someone randomly walk out and I'll have them grab the camera to assist. Either way footage doesn't always turn out great so you edit and cut in the best shots to create the story. Put it all together and lots of parts of the detail are missing but I figure its better to do my best to show you something vs nothing. I do in fact wash top to bottom. I actually wash almost every car I film three times because as previously mentioned its very difficult to film the process. Its not like we can hit the pause button on the foam. It usually drips off more than half the car as im filming and then i need to totally start over all while managing drying water and soap and water spots. Just for your general information. The front of a car is never the dirtiest. Only if we are talking bugs and this car had zero bugs on it. The back of a car is the dirtiest and you could see how bad the swirls in the bumper. This is because of the wind tunnel effect behind the car. It traps and collected a ton of dirt and dust. Usually fine dust and that's the biggest culprit for swirls. This is easy to visually in winter when you see a car driving in snow. Besides that especially on a car like this with huge wheels the dirtiest spots are behind the wheels and about 1-2 feet up the doors. They collect a ton of dirt. Especially on ceramic coates vehicles the front bumper hood and roof are the least dirty. The no wonder there are scratches comment is just confusing my friend. This was the first time I saw this vehicle. Are you implying some kind of time machine was used? How could my assumed bad techniques caused those? I dont personally believe this but some of the best polishers and paint correction guys in the world say the wash section of a correction detail isn't important. "Just get it done/clean." The idea being especially on cars this bad nothing we do during the wash will possibly do any real additional harm unless we try to clean it with steel wool maybe. Its here to be fixed that's the point. As I previously mentioned i don't share that opinion. I wash cars carefully but I do wash a fully corrected and ceramic coated car slightly different. Id recommend you check out our specific washing videos. Thanks for checking this one out and your comment🙂

    • I'm not sure you appreciate or love your car in the same way as a person who gets a Detail like this. That's not a slam or anything. It's perfectly ok and car people have different traits and different things they get enjoyment out of. As you could see the paint was in bad shape and is much better after. The ceramic locks that in and makes it very easy to clean. The point is a better looking car that's easier to care for. As you mentioned when it drives away it can get dirty. But we don't never wash because of that and we don't never drive it in fear of dirt. So you dial the car in make it look great then enjoy it. Wash as needed and it's looks good as new after each wash. What you said could easily be said with many different mods you may like better like bolt ons for hp. One could say what's the point you can't really use it on the street and if it's raining it's almost not worth driving. But it gives you enjoyment. That's what it's about 🙂

  • 6 minutes into this and there are already a few blatently odd procedures and accompanying comments. Using Gyeon Tire Cleaner is a strange one as it's RTU and therefore expensive, nor is it that potent a cleaner relative to other products of it's type. Secondly, why would you bother doing a touchless round on a tyre.. it's not paint, it won't scratch. Lastly your explanation of why the Tire Cleaner browned when you foamed it is just inaccurate.. 'self agitating'?? Did you consider the possibility that white foam may show dark coloured dirt more than black tyres would? The most head in hands moment was your use of the wheel woolie on the faces... I would recommend you attend training.

    • @@STATUSDETAIL it's pretty easy to glean from my above comment. Did you learn this technique from elsewhere on KZhead or are you just winging it as you go? - Touchless tire cleaning step is money down the drain, agitation is always required. - Wheel woolies are for barrels, mitts and brushes are for the faces. - With the exception of fallout removers (which you've neglected to mention here) you'd save a small fortune using a concentrated wheel cleaner as opposed to a RTU tire cleaner.
