Why THAT She-Hulk Scene Was So Controversial

Late to the party but can you blame me. This wasn't really a show anyone was jumping out their seat to go watch. Marvel's Phase 4 gets more underwhelming with each new release, but I'll still give each show/movie a fair shake before passing judgement. This vid was made before episode 2 and 3 came out but not much has changed. Wanted to give my two cents that's hopefully a bit more nuanced than the "STOP WOKE, WOKE BAD" dialogue most people throw at everything MCU.

    • If you have "read" fate stay night, you know how good it is to have completely contradictory characterization. But the characters have to realise that and deal with it accordingly. If they never realise then it's pointless. If she doesn't realise that she might be able to control her anger when someone cat calls her is completely controlling her anger, there is a problem. But if she realises the contradictions and changes her mindset or at the minimum acknowledges it it's something at least.

I'm a woman, yet the way female heroes talk about being a woman, or talk about men in their lives... It's offputting and she looks like an asshole. The issues female heroes talk about are real, but they are said in such a way that it easy dislike the hero, and dismiss the issue.

    • And I don’t want to belittle your experience the way the show did Bruce. Each sex has their own struggles and because of the differences between how the sexes are trained from youth and the expectations put on them. The treatment that is viewed as acceptable to do to one isn’t acceptable to the other. Every side has actions they can take that the other can’t that is a form of abuse on the other party. This is why compassion and sympathy is unisex. But people feel that men suffering in silence means that we don’t suffer.

I've watched the 6 episodes that are out, and one of the biggest flaws is that the writers almost exclusively write "men bad" and women, particularly Jen, as good. • Jen being unfair like that towards Bruce & immediately showing that she does not have her anger under control (this time) is writing her as "good"? I can't remember everything but there were certainly more occasions where she messed up, misjudged etc. & learned. I also remember a certain someone to definitely be written as good as well (as in: not "entirely good" but "also good" aka not "only bad"). Other comments have pointed it out too: Jen can be "selfish" (though I wouldn't call it that- maybe very protective & (rightfully) angry at times) which makes her a great character cause people aren't "perfect" & it gives room for growth.

A good hero arc has something to learn, something to lose, or just something to fight against. Going back to those flaws, she has something to learn, but doesn’t. So I assume she’s fighting men, or toxic masculinity. But, a good show doesn’t have you fight against an entire population- that’s what they did here, so it sucked for men to watch. Mostly because the men were all 1 dimensional characters, toxic males. You don’t have to follow any of these guidelines, and they didn’t, and now they have a shhhtt show. Get woke go broke 😂

  • Here's how I would write She-Hulk. The story would start right after the events of Infinity War after Thanos snapped. Intro/Background: Jen and her crew were driving towards their agency. Singing along to the song from the radio. As they continued driving along the road, they saw a few car wrecks on the side. One of Jen's friend's brushed those of as just a group of teenagers getting into an accident but, the further they went in, the more and more wrecks they began to see. This was when Jen's friend at back began feeling under the weather. They all tend to her to see what's up. Then suddenly. A driverless truck crashed at the back of their vehicle, sending their's hurdling through the barriers and down the hill. Jen soon awoke and all of them scurried out of the vehicle. Coming out with cuts, scratches and bruises with Jen having the worst. The driver and Jen were the only two that got out of the vehicle and looked down to pull their friends at the back out only to be met with empty seats. The driver went up the hill on the side of the highway to call for help. She dialed 911 and called for an emergency. Jen caught up to her to see the horror that had happened. People were injured in various degrees; cries of children filled the surrounding along with the smell of burning fuel and rubber. The area quickly became encased in smoke as the fire caused by the crashes started getting larger. This was when the driver called to Jen and she couldn't believe her eyes. The the foot, slowly crawling up. The driver's body slowly began to fade into dust. Frightened, confused, and weakened. She fell down on her knees to which Jen would catch her. On Jen's lap, she would say her last few words to Jen before completely fading away and those were, "I don't want to die, yet." As she reached to Jen's face. Jen fainted. Later, she woke up on a bed, in a chamber and outside was Bruce, sleeping, looking tired, a mess, and was clearly depressed. She banged on the glass between them to wake Bruce up and asked what had happened. Bruce woke up and upon seeing his cousin, immediately entered the chamber to give her a tight hug. Confused, Jen asked once more. Bruce then asked Jen if she's alright to which Jen would nod. She was still out of touch, as if she had forgotten something. She tried remembering, but all she got was a headache which later triggered her Hulk, causing her pain all over. Bruce knew what was going to happen and got out to grab the tranquilizer made especially for him. As Jen's consciousness started to fade, the last thing she heard was the glass shattering before Bruce shouting her name as if she was charging at him. Later after the incident: Jen would find herself in a room, once again inside a chamber that seemed to be much more secure than the last one. Outside was Bruce, once more. She would ask Bruce what he had done to her and he would answer that he had to do it. He would later bring forth a report and explain the incident to her. Bruce would also announce that they had lost to Thanos and because of that. They lost half of the universe's population. Bruce would then continue to say that she was found beside the road, unconscious and needed medical assistance. She needed a blood transfusion which, at the time, Bruce was the only one who around with blood that was compatible to her. As Bruce told her the story, she would start getting flashbacks about the incident. Her head would ache, she would feel a rush, a burning sensation all over her body. Her consciousness was starting to fade. She would squirm on the floor before letting out a roar. Once again, transforming into Hulk. She would slam unto the glass and see her arms. Her eyes widen in disbelief as she realizes what had happened to her. Pt.2 on next comment.

I would add that it even goes much further, it isn’t just we are supposed to be strong and lack emotional support. We as men also are in competition with all other men for women. While all women do is choose who they want. Stats today show about 30% of women are “single”, while 50% of men are single. What does that mean, it means women are sharing the same guys (the top guys). Also 30% of men are involuntary celibate and haven’t had s3x in over a year (some much longer). While women are never involuntarily celibate, if they are it’s because they choose to be. Women reading this are probably like, “yeah, so”? This is the problem, when it comes to dating, women live life on easy mode. While guys, unless you are rich or Chad, are set to max difficulty (or don’t have a chance at all).

Are thing that I don't understand is that you claim women have it easier but only mention dating. Why do you only mention dating? Dating as a whole is voluntarily and something people do for fun. This writing thing they did does make her look like a hypocrite because her character was already a mary sue. Why would she feel the need to tell him how his power works when she's the one that just got it. And it's worse that during their training scene the show tries to convince us she excels at everything compared to bruce. It's worse when she says she's better at controlling her anger than he is but starts to get angry. That's just my take on that scene. But you're right about character and development and flaws. It's very obvious she is written to piss you off with how egotistical she starts off ass. Though as you said she's hardly had the powers so it's clearly manipulating her perspective. That's how redemption arc's work. She's unlikable then redeemed by seeing the light an becoming in synced with Bruce an then working together. Also, if anyone has read the comics she's nothing like this at all. She's already empathetic to Bruce in the comics. Now I could be wrong, she could stay a asshole the entire show lol. I'm just saying how writing goes especially in Mary sue like superhero shows the set up to character development is pretty blatant an her set up is pretty blatant. Her flaw is being egotistical thus not being empathetic to others let's her ragr take control. She's in denial because of it. So when her world falls apart an all the problems Bruce warned her about she'll be enlightened an work with Bruce an be understanding an apologize. For some reason, not many youtube commentators have figured out how to criticize female characters or "woke" writing, as well as highlighting the unique problems men face, without being misogynistic. It's hard to find anything remotely positive about Feminism anymore, and even the positive stuff is drowned out by the mountains of sheer stupid going on. Feminism won the fight in every way that mattered quite a long time ago, at least in the U.S. and most other first world countries. Rather than just going "mission accomplished" or refocusing their efforts upon the parts of the world where this doesn't hold true, instead to justify the continued existence of the movement they find more ridiculous and petty crap to treat like the next big crusade.

  • I love the video, you made a lot of amazing points. Bruce Banner/Hulk has always been a fascinating hero for me, because he's the personification of uncontrolled anger, and most mediums featuring the character do an excellent job displaying how rage can be just as destructive as it can be helpful. In our society, anger is one of the few emotions men are encouraged to feel, but they're never really taught how to deal with it. The MCU films really explored this point, hammering home the idea that "Banner is helpful, Hulk is useful." The calm, collected Banner can be relied on, but when it comes to crunch time, we call the Hulk to get stuff done. To me, it made sense that Banner struggled more with his emotions, and found it more difficult to come to a place of understanding. Losing control was something others wanted and expected from him at certain times, so of course he'd never feel like he was in control of his emotions. As he said in the first Hulk film, the best he could hope for was to direct the anger at a problem. That's what made the 'blend' so impactful. Professor Hulk is the best of both worlds - he can maintain his calm, he knows how to use his intelligence and his experience, but he can also tap into the usefulness of his anger at will, and he can control it. It was a moment of this male character, the personification of rage control issues, accepted that his anger was a part of him, and it was better to know how to use it than to succumb to it. And then you get his cousin, both literally and figuratively as green as they come when it comes to rage-induced superpowers, and she dismisses his struggle and his experience, despite having every reason to relate to it. It felt like the MCU just completely negated the years of character growth they built for Banner just so they could have 'don't mansplain to me' moment. Just because you know your own situation better than someone else doesn't mean that you're more suited to deal with that situation than they are, especially if they're literally the only expert in the world. I'm sure as a lawyer, she would agree to that point.

She had no friends and very little when she was her normal human self, but every time she transformed she became this beautiful strong woman with confidence. So she rarely takes her human form. Idk why they didn't just stick with that version of her. It would make for a more compelling character.

    @ShikamaruAzumi@ShikamaruAzumi Жыл бұрын
    • But your interpretation requires being capable of reading subtext and being able to humanize a female character. This isn't possible with many people in the Marvel Fanbase. They don't really think of these characters as people. They're action figures. They think the spoken/written word is all there is and they are incapable of seeing the context. This is the group that doesn't understand satire or sarcasm because they are superficial thinkers. If a woman says "Yeah", they'll go "see, she agreed" and the rest of us will say "She didn't sound enthusiastic. She sounded the opposite of enthusiastic". for example, even this youtuber lost a star. why? Because She-Hulk breaks the fourth wall. That's part of the comic "lore". How can one bother to have a take if they can't even do a minimum amount of research into this character. (I had the comic book when I was a kid and yeah, this comic broke the fourth wall. It's not copying. It's being faithful to the "lore" that this same group will use to savagely beat any alternative adaptation of their fanboy obsession.) I think it shows a lack of reality awareness on the part of this group of Marvel fanbrats that they don't see how the media is reflecting the reality. They want a She-Hulk who caters to men and doesn't have her own fucked up worldview. They want a superwoman who will always side with them. They want perfect women rather than flawed human beings who are women and girls. They want their mommy. That's what it comes down to at the end of the day. Every single female comic book character needs to be their mommy. She can't be fucked up. she must always be empathetic and all knowing to comfort the man. Oh. and she can't be hard. She can't be ambitious. She can't be pig headed. She can't be extraordinary. She must be small enough so that the smallest fanboy can feel big. (look, I rolled my eyes when Tony Stark had a serious chest injury AND could still create a robot suit AND a new form of energy/battery thing. That's the silliest thing possible but you take the movie as a story, you suspend disbelief and you go along with it. we all know the marvel fanboys went along with this silly scenario or any of the other ones. They just have a problem when the implausibility involves women because none of these female characters can play their mommy.) please note, they'll always say "We like strong women". But I've observed that the women they list SERVE men. The only one that's a bit different is Ellen Ripley and that was written for a male character. No wonder it's not like a Sarah Connor who fights to protect /serve her son. I don't think the marvel fanbrats want real women. they want cardboard cutouts. They'll always expect extraordinary super mommies because heaven offend if we get a messy real human women being portrayed. It's no different from white conservatives who tell black people that "they just need to comply". It's utterly arrogant and dumb.

They do it every movie there has to be some mention of either White Supremacy (Winter soldier/Falcon) or the Patriarchy (Captain Marvel) or the LGBTQ Agenda has to be worshipped as super heroic (Disney hasn't really done anything too bad in this department yet but they do make sure every movie has an LGBTQ scene or character. Kamala Kahn, America Chavez, the moms from Buzz Light Year, etc and thats all just in the last year lol, and again im not saying its bad or wrong im just saying they are definitely making sure -every- movie has LGBTQ representation despite the fact that being Queer is actually really rare in real life but if you look at our movies you'd think half of america was gay. And, you'd kinda be right with the way the entire Democratic party flies rainbow flags) Man that was a mouthfull. To summarize. This isn't about the scene its about the message. The message being they always need to shove something anti-male, anti-white, or flash LGBTQ propaganda in front of children. Having a woman fight the patriarchy, not necessarily bad. HAving a black person deal with racism, not necessarily bad. Its when your entire business model is based on pushing those far left issues to ascertain some sort of cultural control that it becomes a nefarious problem. Its when characters and movies and stories are told purely to push these ideological agendas. Because trust me there isnt anyone that thought Ms Marvel, Captain Marvel, America Chavez, or She Hulk ever needed to get their own movie or tv shows. no one ever thought that. those aren't popular characters. So this isnt about making money. If it was they'd be making another deadpool movie, or another x-men movie, or another avengers movie. but no. its these movies that every single one of them is pushing some woke agenda and they leak it in one line, one scene, one chapter, one story arc at a time so that people grow up thinking well, if i see it in every single movie, it must be real right? It must be how it is right? they aren't making these movies and tv shows because of money. They are doing it because theres a culture war happening right now and they are trying to play their part in wiping one side of the culture war out by choosing the other side and making these shitty comments aimed at the other side every time, and every time, its the people they attack that were their biggest supporters. • The complete opposite of this scene, which I just love so much, is in Demon Slayer the first season. The main character has lost almost his entire family and has seen some _insanely_ graphic stuff in just a short time. At the end of an episode (forgot which one) a young man who he has just helped is mourning the fresh loss of his fiance. He rejects the main character's attempts to comfort him, venting about how bad he has it and that the MC would NEVER understand his pain and how bad things are. Meanwhile, the MC just smiles and kindly walks away. But then the young man realized just how beaten and tough he was for a boy his age, realizing this MUST mean he suffered hardships. The young man quickly realizes his error and apologizes. I just love moments like these, mostly because you hardly EVER see it. Someone who knows the other is wrong, but still has compassion to not argue with them and instead empathize with their tough position. That is kind of position the Hulk in this situation if you think about it. Except his cousin never sees the errors of her statement like the young man in Demon Slayer.

  • Dude. This was a great analysis, and so great nearer to the end where you went into the whole "men have their own challenges". Yes, absolutely. Any sensitivity is viewed a certain way by men and women alike... any expression of feelings, etc. We're taught at a young age to suck it up and not talk about it. When you review Hulk's arc, you have to think that he got picked on in his life for being smart and not being the alpha. You see how he was isolated, how he faced significant adversity, how he lost loved ones, etc. There's no need to play who suffered worse, and there definitely isn't cause to do it by gender or race. I assume we've all been through some stuff to varying degrees and some stuff rolls off my back that wouldn't roll off of yours, and other things hurt me more than they would you, etc. Women, men, it doesn't matter... as individuals, we all deal with life and go through our own struggles. No one should assume what struggles someone else has gone through. Marvel is just going over the top with this stuff, and it does a disservice to the way women should be portrayed in the Marvel Universe. I'm all for "girl power", but does it need to include "men are trash"? Female characters in Marvel and in Sci-Fi deserve much better than what She-Hulk is bringing. I couldn't show this to my daughters at all... because they shouldn't see such one dimensional depictions of women and men. Thanks for your video... you really put it together very well.

Instead of just doing that you got right to the point that the problem is not WHAT is told but HOW it is told. She-Hulk is literally the embodiment of everything people hated about Mulan. She is exactly the same as main protagonists of every generic isekai power fantasy. She is just naturally gifted or talented and nothing she does is ultimately wrong. The character has no room for growth, which makes her boring and therefore the story becomes lackluster after a while. The controversy about the show is just people who love to turn bad writing into a culture war thingy because they saw something that reminds them of the people they don't like. A movie about a natural disaster is good? No one is going to talk about its political message. A movie about a natural disaster is bad? Woke climate change activists ruining movies! This is happening way too often. People should consider the stories told and the way they are told more often. And they should stop projecting something onto the creators and just criticize the media for what it is and what it did good or bad. Everything can be made to be about politics but it doesn't have to be. We choose to do so - sadly.

I had a pretty shitty life, to the point I tried to end it on multiple occasions. I had no one to talk to and no one to help me. (before you jump to conclusions, yes, I've tried to get professional help- led me nowhere). When I was "lucky enough" to finally find a soulmate, very nice girl, it was hard and scary but I tried to open up to her about my trauma and my problems. I was vulnerable, I hate being vulnerable but I've thought she was the right person I could be honest with. My thought process was "all people have their own hands full but MAYBE if someone loves me they can hear me out?" When we broke up, she said I was "whiny". You see the problem here? Do you think that after shit like this I will EVER open up to anyone? Lmao. So yeah, no wonder men just off themselves at daily basis. We're belittled, we're mocked. You don't earn enough money? You're trash. You don't have 6 pack? You're trash. You are short? Take a guess. Girls literally look for partners who has a certain height- thing that we have no control over! (I am 6'1 but my point still holds for men who are short- this is NOT the right criteria to choose someone over) The pressure on anyone with a penis is immerusable. Yesterday I've read that "pathetic men is funny". Try to reverse this situation. Are "pathetic girls" funny? What's "funny" about anyone being "pathetic" or "weak"? I am not saying men have it worse than women, you're absoltely right, each sex has its own downsides, but we don't have it easier, that's I can say for certain. Characters being self-centered and cruel can be great writing when used to good effect. With that said, I don’t know if the writers did a good job in the follow-up and I never will because the show looks bad and I don’t want to watch it.

    • You have a point. Characters like Iron man and Thor, went through character arcs that helped them become better people( well thors Character arc is usually a round circle nowadays). A character doesn't have to be perfect, but the characters main narrative has to be self aware of this. And that is where my problem is with most morden female characters. It's either the writers are to afraid or to ignorant to make this characters go through character arcs that makes them say " Hey, I ain't shit, and I should try and be a better person". The female characters come off as self entitled, when their character narrative isn't self aware. Basically this characters narrative is that the problem isn't and wasn't ever them , it's the world. Which isn't an interesting take on a characters growth. Like imagine if we went through the whole 3 Iron man movies and 4 Avengers movies, with Tony still being an narcissistic alcholic playboy?

    • On a normal scenario, that would be the ideal outcome. On the actual scenario, such flaws aren't leading anywhere as to be acknowledged as a character flaw by the writers. Rather, all of this read to me as just some kind of self-insert power fantasy done this time on a feminist lens, an amateur writing trap I've always despised, no matter what.

I would be happy and suprised if they did do something like that, I just don't think it will happen

    @prinzezzqtpi5437@prinzezzqtpi5437 Жыл бұрын
    • The woke problem is when you have female characters or black characters then only women or blacks can identify with it. No where is Hulk in the MCU only relatable to men or whites only. All the woke female films now do noting but men bash. Well, maybe time we men women bash. I have seen guys done far more wrong by women than women have by a simple whistle as she passes by because she is dressed inappropriately. And when you where a dress that barley covers your butt and a shirt that is three times to small, you are doing it to tease or get attention. I have had women go out with me on a date for a free meal and movie only to then go screw some guy who is not worth anything just because he looks like Mr America. So the sex bashing can go both ways. Woke means to be self centered. like it is okay to have a black only series, but not a white only series.

      @r.morris5589@r.morris5589 Жыл бұрын
    • But he did though... did you watch the video? 6:50 (for about 2 minutes) is one of them. The definition of woke is standing up to social injustice, but the fact is, right now, the only social justice going on is for very specific race/gender... hence woke is the habit of bringing up issues, that are not really issues, but problem that each people face, but only bringing up those that involves the minority because "My struggle great, your struggle puny". And that's also why people throw around that word a lot, because it doesn't have a benefit to most men, it in fact has become a form of abuse to most men (among other entities), hence, the divide. It's good to give a good non-political criticism, but its nearly impossible these days not to complain about the abuse. I only ask for one thing, let me watch tv shows in peace. I didn't escape a frustrating day in reality to jump straight into the damn flames. I don't compare, I simply ask for there not to be room for that sort of talk in entertainment. Let entertainment, be entertainment. One doesn't entertain oneself with politics, that's simply not how entertainment work. So by calling out the fact Green lady is putting her struggles on the pedestal with Green man's struggles lower than that pedestal, he's quite literally complaining about woke-ism. 0_0 Just saying.

  • Growing up my entertainment was full of admirable female heroes, just as strong, smart, honourable and righteous as their male counterparts. When I look at modern female heroes, the ones more in line with present day feminism I’d be excused for thinking a misogynist wrote them. Rather than ‘with great power comes great responsibility’ female heroes are written as ‘might makes right’, they’re written as if restraint was a trick of the patriarchy and that if they can they should… in short they end up being written as if they were villains. The best example is Captain Marvel who, for the crime of having been told to smile, injures a guy infinitely weaker than her and essentially mugs him. The MCU is writing women to a toxic feminist revenge fantasy and in doing so consistently making women and feminists look like awful people who could never be trusted with power- because they WILL hurt people and feel good about it.

The leaking blood just happens to land in her wound, and Banner is actually wounded to begin with because of a make-me-human gizmo he invented, which apparently is never seen again since it would negate the whole self-control theme is quite a string of McGuffins, but whatever, anything to make it not be Walters needing to be saved, but just an accident. The problem really is that Walters is not a sympathetic character. She retains her intellect, gains invulnerability, strength...all while staying herself. Its literally Hulk with zero downside, nothing like Bruce's own experience, yet she has no empathy that his experience was much worse, because Bruce lost the ability to be Bruce when Hulk takes over. The writing squandered their chance by making Walters defensive, and not giving her a learning curve to appreciate the price her cousin paid.

But this specific scene was outright character assassination for both Bruce and Jennifer, because simultaneously you have Jennifer outright belittling Bruce's issues (too bad you were a fugitive and had your entire life destroyed, I get cat called sometimes) it also makes Bruce look like a patronizing idiot all in the name of pop feminism. Even without knowing what exactly Bruce has been through, you can still identify the risk you pose to others, including loved ones, as seen in Age of Ultron. I get that being yanked out of your rising career would be very distressing but in such 'anger inducing' jobs there's always that looming risk she could mess it all up with She Hulk. • I believe you've hit it on the head. Holywood's idea of writing female protagonists is to make them infallible and stronger in pretty much every way than their male counterparts. Then, instead of lifting up the female protagonist they tear down the males in the show, often reducing them to caricatures of toxic masculinity. The finishing touch is added by having at least one feminist lecture per episode: in the case of She-Hulk the scene you chose fits that bill, whereas in ep 2 we had the breaking of the 4th wall as She-Hulk shows us a room filled with old white guys whose male privilege she decries, while in ep 3 the lecture comes from Jennifer Walters as she testifies in court to the lack of moral character of her former male coworker. You know what bugged me the most? That the writers made it so that Jennifer Walters HAS to be in She-Hulk form in the office but then in Ep 3 she represents the firm OUTSIDE the office in her human form, both in the prison trial and in her coworker's trial in court. So WHY did the writers force Jennifer Walters to be She-Hulk at work? So that they can complain about it in Ep 2 and have She-Hulk twerk in Ep. 3. Top notch writing all around...
