Additional comments on the villain at 11:25 below (Persona 5 Royal Spoilers): It is also *incredibly* hypocritical for the Phantom Thieves to oppose Maruki’s plan to rid the world of suffering through cognitive pscience. They make the argument that everyone should have the freedom and autonomy to go at it on their own. To take the world head on and fight for their own happiness. That if the happiness is just created for them, then it’s not true happiness. But they quite literally did the same thing. Not every one of their targets has been a criminal in need of reforming. Futaba was a palace owner who’s distorted desires they took away to allow her to overcome her trauma. She didn’t overcome it on her own, they actively used Metaverse magic to cure her. How are they any different from Maruki who’s trying to do the exact same thing on a planetary scale? Is it because Futaba asked for it to be done? In that case should they not have woken everybody up and asked the masses whether or not they want to return to the past reality?
Idk if I am remembering the game correctly here or just making shit up but I remember this hypocrisy being Marukis main argument against the phantom thieves with them not being able to come up with any counter arguments, because in the end what they are doing is the same thing. I think I also remember the ending being about them coming to terms with not being phantom thieves anymore, so that they can actually support their ideology of learning from trauma. I am not disagreeing with your point on Maruki being in the right here btw I just think that this gives at least some justification to what the phantom thieves are doing.

To me the villain speech that hits home will always be Doflamingo’s speech on justice. On how children that never now peace have different values from those who never know war. And how the victors control what right and wrong. How they choose the future and chose how the past is seen. The winner defines what justice is. “Will justice triumph, you say?” “Of course it will” “Because the winners become justice”
Yeah that was great. It’s amazing how much “right” and “wrong” can be manipulated based on who’s in charge.

even as he was dying he never stopped believing that his idea to eliminate hatred was the right thing to do, and that what Naruto and Sasuke believed was completely wrong and that they would be unable to eliminate the circle of hatred, which ended up happening neither Naruto nor Sasuke were able to eliminate conflicts from the shinobi world
Tbh, one thing Thanos completely underestimated is the fact that people find more efficient ways to use dwindling resources and even find new ways to use resources that were worthless before. Killing half of all people is also killing half of all potential people who could find the next source of bountiful clean energy, or create an agricultural innovation that could help feed millions.
by that same logic theres a chance he just wipes away all the bad people and get lucky that only good/smart people remain
@@SamFagundes the chance of doing what the first guy said is significantly higher
@@SamFagundescrazy extrEme 😂
That logic only applies to things such as energy. You can't make venison magically have more calories for example. You can't double all air without killing everyone because to much oxygen is a painful way to die. Thanos also stated *ALL* life, imagine you are deer and suddenly another deer appeared just so people can kill it because someone deemed your species a resource and not life. That isn't fair to them. Thanos picked the most moral of two horrible options.
@@FoxBoyWithBushyTailAndEarsthe OP isn't saying that Thanos should create MORE life, he's saying that Teo heads are better than one. Which is why the god complex is so harmful. One person cannot, never has, never will, and never can hope to create a solution for everyone that fits perfectly. Some people have better ideas than others of how to do certain things. Erasing half of the potential of all life to do something better than before is a serious waste of potential. He got on his high horse because he was strong and had the ability to decide other people's life, whether they would live or die and thought it actually sounded smart to kill half of all life forms to save resources, much of which is life forms, because most things subsist off of them. He creates the same problem unless you have the ability to survive off of Inorganic material.

Fun Fact about Thanos: There's a little detail in Guardians of the Galaxy during the prison line-up scene that says Gamora is the "last of her race", yet Thanos says that her planet is thriving. Dude either didn't check because he was too scared to disappoint his daughter or simply because he didn't want to be wrong.
Or its a plothole
@@ptero93 90% of comics have this though because there’s comics that either continue that thought or the other one so there’s no real plot hole
It's just a plot hole bro different directors worked on GotG 1 and IW and the movies are 3 years apart
@@Evets_03 you can't put something like that in a movie without conveying it to the audience, so its still a plothole. And also - really bruh? You think they actually did some shit like that? Definitely not
@@Karlach_ The thing about that statement is that James Gunn actually admitted that there was a plothole in the exact same scene and it was Rocket being an accomplice with Lyja when he knows that'll contradict what he has planned. That and he's also admitted that it was a plot hole with the Stan Lee bit. The difference here is it's deliberate otherwise he would've jumped the gun and immediately point it out like he did with the other two points I mentioned. You may say "the movies are 3 years apart", keep in mind there's a scene in The First Avenger where when Steve saves Bucky, you can hear him whispering to himself as if he was being brainwashed. Seriously, I recommend watching the MCU again. There's a lot of small stuff to be picked-up on. At least the Infinity Saga.

The worst part about the Lisa's death was that Dracula gave them one year to flee the land before he begins to body people, but instead of doing the reasonable thing and FLEEING THE COUNTRY, they chose to CELEBRATE the day of his wife's death instead, which was also the day that DRACULA WAS GOING TO BODY THEM. Castlevania has so many moments where the villains are right and the conversations Issac has with his night creatures are so good
They really did a fantastic job fleshing out Dracula's hate for mankind and I was blown away by what they did with Isaac. His game counterpart is a pretty generic edgy rival, but the anime's version is the best written character arc I've seen in years. Was nice that they gave a reasoning for why Death has always served Dracula, which had always been unclear in the games beyond the vague implication that an alchemical artifact bound Death to Dracula as his servant, back when Dracula was still Matthias.
Castlevania was such a great show
You realize that Isaac’s arc is about him realizing that his opinion, and by extension Dracula’s, on humanity is wrong? He literally grows from secondary villain to secondary hero in 3 seasons.
The villains were never right. Only you edgelords think so.
@@Ismael-kc3ry yes. Which is why I said I like the conversations between him and his night creatures. And I never said the villains were straight up right about everything, do any of you actually ready? I said there was many moments where they were right...I never said their way of the thinking was absolute. Both sides can be right, humans are cruel, but we have the ability to be better, to be kinder, to be more...human. I swear how do you people mange to be so negative about being positive.
One villain I think of is Zemo because he was more aware of how superherroes actually caused a lot of damage. Because of the actions of Stark, the villain Ultron was born, who nearly destroyed the human race, and because they didn't stop him quick enough, did end up destroying Sercovia. These heroes had nearly unmatched powers and was not beholden to any agency or government, and if they ever turned bad, or created something bad, which they did, intentionally or not, they ended up causing more problems than they solve. Also assuming they actually solved much of anything. If you think about it, because of their actions, they ended up creating more of a possibility for Thanos than ever before, which created destruction for half of the world. And let's not forget that they didn't even truly fix that problem: by not setting things to back before the blip, they created the refugee crisis which caused the problems of the flag smashers and even more debt, instability, and probably more that we are not even aware of yet.
The Avengers were never heroes, cause real heroes shouldn't work for a government that routinely fucked over its citizens for centuries. Most of them were killers and vigilantes.
Stark caused 80% of their problems, cosmic other ish caused like another 15%. And Stark is usually at the center of destruction because he's a weapons manufacturer, not because of superhumans. Rarely are the heroes actually the cause of trouble, they just deal with it. Honestly, without the avengers NYC would be a nuclear wasteland so people should be grateful the little damage taken was all that Earth sustained. Thanos disappeared everyone, but the Avengers causes the subsequent issues? Make that make sense.
Another interesting one is the phantom troupe from HxH. They're motives and actions are not as clean as these examples however they show they care about the other members and manage to follow a code of conduct better than almost any other group in media I've seen.
I'm glad Dracula was brought up here. I love how he displays each stage of grief. By the end of the second second he's just.... apathetic. The hatred and fury is still there, but its barely under this thick grimy layer of "I'm just fucking tired." the only time we see him roused from his lethargy is during the final conflict with Belmont and Sypha, but even then then it's more like mild amusement at the whole thing rather than a blood thirsty quest for vengeance. It's only when Alucard confronts Dracula do we see some of that old fury and hate rise to the surface. This is likely Dracula repressing the very real feelings of love and compassion that he has for his son, because when we later see that façade crack it more or less figuratively cripples him both physically and emotionally. Dracula is one of the few villains I've seen in modern media where their apathy is actually explored. Dracula is a villain with survivor's guilt.
That was a great way to explain it. Good job.
dracula does seem like he just hates humans at first, but getting into the second season (the proper one) every second person to talk to him suggests that if they are overpowering humans so easily, why don't they just farm them since killing all humans would remove their own food supply. Dracula responds to this by threatening to eat them where they stand but before pissing him off you can see he's just planning the slowest most elaborate suicide
"The suffering doesn't matter anymore. Only the death"
I never watched the show but it looks good
I'm just glad you spelt "façade" right.
Doctor Doom also was pretty logical. He saw every future and the only one without death and destruction was the one where he ruled the planet. He even met Wakanda's panther god (Bast) who kills all impure hearts and survived the encounter.
he is the best, mcu better not ruin him
Anyone know the song at 9:12?
Lmao that is terrible reasoning. Just cause someone would theoretically do soemtjing in the future you punish them now? And every human has an impure heart lmao that’s just ridiculous 😂 we’re not perfect😂
Not saying he was a nice guy, actually he tries to do a heroic thing in a villainous way, but no its not up to theory. Doom knew something no one else did, he's seen all futures through his own vision and it was completely true. In the end it was about ruling the world to protect it. Power and wealth were just perks to him. I mean the guy saved his mothers soul from eternal damnation. Even one time Doom went to the vibranium vault in Wakanda and as I already mentioned had to present his soul to Bast the panther god. If Doom had an ounce of greed or hatred in him, he would've been killed by Bast. Doom rules over an entire country with happy people living in it, just as long as they pledge undying loyalty to him. He wants power that's for sure, but Doom having power benefits his peoples safety. Quite frankly he's a better ruler than most in the Marvel Universe. No matter how cruel or sickening of a action he makes, it will more often than not serve a single optimistic purpose. I'd say he's not totally evil, but moreso brash and arrogant because he definitely has good intentions in his brilliant mind.
Doom is fun but he is basically satan
I love that you used freedom and security. Literally gave me goosebumps

Dr Doofensmirz could’ve had a good reasoning for why he always tries to destroy the city. If you know his absolutely DEVASTATING backstory then you can find a good reason why he does it. Agent Smith belongs on this list too. I am still amazed how everyone's rooting for the humans in the Matrix trilogy when they've extinguished all life except for a handful of themselves on the one planet that had the capacity to support it. Thanos was not just focus on earth, so other planets may have distribute their resources equally with the same results of lost there for i see no flaw. but for the record in the comics thanos did all this so that death would love him.
This is fallocy. For example, say you have two countries. One with plenty, one starving. The plentiful country has one and a half cups worth of food production, and only needs one cup worth to sustain itself. The starving country only makes half a cup of food in production, but needs one cup of food to sustain itself. The quick answer is the plentiful country should share its surplus. Now both countries are comfortable. As the population grows, you need more food. Assuming neither has gotten more land nor hospitable growing environments, now both countries need an additional half cup of food. The formerly plentiful country is now the villain. Do we protect our own citizens and commit genocide by inaction? Will the other country go to war knowing there isn't enough? Tl,Dr; distribution isn't the answer
@@DaOneDaOnlyBMan huh? If populations increase in both and you don't have the means to support both, that does not mean redistribution didn't help. Did it solve everything in this hypothetical made up story? No, but it did help the people in the poorer country. Are you suggesting the abundant country do nothing while it benefits from having so much while another country starves? Or should one help the other while it can? Abundant country should help with resources both directly and intellectually if the poorer country is lacking so they they can collectively produce enough for both. The answer is not to genocide and get rid of the suffering people to remove suffering. The answer is to think as a collective existence rather than nationalistically. There is not "my people" and "your people" There is just "people" This rings true on all levels, macro and micro. Should I only think about my self or should I also help my family? Should I think about my family or also think about other families? Should those families think about just themselves or also their towns? Should those towns think about other towns too? The answer is obvious. All humans should be considerate of all other humans and when one has something the other needs, the solution is clear end mutually beneficial. Teach your neighbor how to fish, and feed them the fish you have to spare.

Madara winning actually wouldn’t be the worst thing. Itachi did something similar to his girlfriend before he killed her, showing her a life where they have children and lived happily. She even thanked him when he released her from the Genjutsu.
I agree, as long as you don't ever notice it's a dream, for example, ya know how some people realize their dreaming and then control it, lucid dreaming, if that happened in the tsunokiyomi or however you spell it, then it would be sad because it's not real

Considering the current state of the MCU, I’m starting to believe Thanos was the true hero all along.
Old movies from 1980-2010 are much better.
He should have went all in fr
He should have snapped away Disney/Marvel 🤣
-Twerking she hulk-
No thanos was literally a damn maniac sorry to say this and burst ppls bubbles but regardless of his philosophy Thanos had the gauntlet and used it for violence when he literally could have improved the Earth's resources with a snap but Barney ain't think of that
I think certain villains like Emperor Palpatine, Morgoth Darkseid work best when they are presented as archetypes of ultimate, irredeemable evil in the plot. I mean how can one humanize a character who's inherently meant to be the embodiment of all evil?
Yeah I'm actually tired of all "he was misunderstood hero or villain all along" type of villains. That's basically every villain in Naruto. That's why Aizen is top modern day Shonen villain imo. Dude was evil and that was it.
@@Thiago_Alves_Souza Aizen could actually have a noble cause we were just never told about it. He wanted to get to the soul palace and kill the soul king because he was tired of him just watching and wanted the ruler of the world to do shit. What makes Aizen my favorite anime villain is the lack of information and mystery surrounding him.
Big Jack Horner also comes to mind.
@@capitalism7189 he might have a justification but it wasn't due to some noble cause, he wanted ultimate power and serve no one. That's why he asked Urahara as why a man with his intellect would serve the Soul King? Knowing Kisuke to be the only man smart enough and the only man he actually feared, it baffled Aizen why he didn't vy for the ultimate power as well. That in itself is evil, he cared nothing for humanity nor the well being of the world.
In the original expanded universe, we got Palpatine's backstory, and I loved how they didn't try and give him a tragic reason for becoming who he was. Yeah, his dad was a dick, but Palpatine was a sociopathic monster with insatiable ambition from the get go.
-dudeee this vid just made me realize how underrated Castlevania is and that I have to go finish that Isaac vs Carmilla fight and the rest of that season, so.. brb🤗
Giving props to the villains while a song by the goat villain himself plays in the background. Nice👌
I remember the Anti-Spiral telling Simon that he'll have to protect the universe and he's just like "yea, don't worry"
"The greatest villains in fiction are those with believable motivations. Not necessarily ones you agree with, but ideas where you can look at the villain and say "yeah. Yeah I can see how you got here." Yup. That's it. That's why I like Vergil from the Devil May Cry series. Especially if you've read any the books. He's been through a lot. Justifying his actions is a whole other situation entirely, but you can't look at him and think "Nah, he's just doing this to be doing it." Everything that man does is driven by trauma, grief, guilt, and pain. He's got a tough facade because he'd fall apart if he didn't. EDIT: I know that Vergil is more of an Antagonist than a villain, but you get what I mean 😂
Virgil is no villain, he's the source of my motivation bro.
@@fromthesouthofafrica6815 ikr? Everyday he motivates me, I look at him and realize that I too… can have a chair like that.
He's motivated tho
Reason like that are imo way better than "i want to be the ruler of the universe" type reasons
Isn't Vergil also a Dad? He had a child with a human, and he hates humans. I mean in DMC4 you play as Vergils Son/ Dantes Nephew.

BRUH, I love how quickly it turned to just complete satire at the end LMAO
Excellent video essay. genuinely. I loved how you explained the persona series, I loved how you explained killmonger. I’m a marvel nerd though and I’m gonna correct one thing as all cringey marvel fans do. Thanos in the comics is as most definitely more justified villain but you missed the part about why Death wasn’t interested in him. You got the point but his ego is what gets to him. This is important to that story because it reflects not only the beginning but the end as well. When he has all the stones he comes back to death and is like “I’m your equal now. We can date and you SHOULD date me” she’s so offended that she was lied to about him wanting to be her civil servant during the silver surfer run, as well as this being tribute as opposed to seduction SHE DOESNT EVEN SAY ANYTHING TO HIM. She has her servant speak her mind by proxy. That’s the moment where he says oh yeah here’s your tribute and then snaps his fingers out of a last ditch effort to be with her. Later in that same story he becomes a god and leaves his body which leaves the gauntlet on a corpse for nebula to grab, because he is in the end still mortal and still bound to this world by its laws, never to be with death and never to ascend to godhood truly. This being said that definitely would’ve messed with the pacing of your video so I get it. I guess this comment lives for people who want further context
I thought Madara's plan was dumb because "I'm going to prevent war by starting a war and getting alot of people killed."
5:40 YOOOO, never knew that Thanos's mother was such a baddie!!!!
I like how as the mcu goes on Thanos becomes more justified.
Y'know, the She-Hulk TV series really was a thought-provoking series that really makes the viewer question their morality by raising the possibility of a bright future where Thanos truly won and the She-Hulk TV series never had to exist.
Yeah thanos is justified while ignoring a single ounce of logic and actively have the narrative revolve around how he’s “right.” In reality, thanos only had the right belief, but his solution is utter garbage. You know what happens when you snap away not only half of all overpopulated life, but half of all endangered life, and especially half of trees out of existence? Global warming, nuclear war, food chain in utter disarray, and let’s also ignore how earth would turn into Venus if half of all bacteria just suddenly disintegrated. Thanos is not only wrong, he screwed up the planet entirely.
I've known you for 20 minutes and I vibe with you more than 90% of the people I've interracted with on the internet
Great video. A part 2 should happen.
man that maruki part was great. RIP billy kametz 🙏🏾
I love villains that put me in moral dilemmas, but it does have to be said that not all villains have to be morally ambiguous, a total evil like the intelligent machines in Matrix or the lich from adventure time can be used intelligently to develop characters and achieve a thoughtful resolution.
I’ll say it: are the machines really evil, or just trying to survive with a power source (humans)? Morpheus says that the humans were the ones that scorched the sky.
Bill Cipher
I could relate to everyone's motivation in this till the end. I can't get behind knitters 😂
You’re totally right about thanos, like anyone with a decent brain would figure that out in less than 2 minutes This is why we must not let anyone on Twitter have an important position anywhere
I was expecting Count Dooku to show up as a character explanation. He truly did want the Galaxy to be a better place and never gave himself into darkside completely. But, if we are talking only about big screen, it seems like he's just another random dude showing up to be the villain.
The movie did his character dirty. Coulda been so much more
@@NasuPrime Dirty? He had enormous charisma and badassery thanks to Christopher Lee!
He also appeared to be a pretty great contrast to Anakin. While Anakin was a Jedi on the brink of turning to the Dark Side, Dooku was the most light-side-oriented Sith in existence. Dooku was also the master of the late Qui-Gon Jinn, a Jedi whose death may have sealed Anakin's fate. And his final fight with Anakin mirrors the final fight between Luke and Vader in Episode VI, where in that fight Luke turns away from his hate and anger and denies the Emperor his victory, while in this fight in Episode III Anakin gives in to his hatred and to Palpatine's will and executes the unarmed prisoner.
He might seem like a random villain until that scene in EP 2 where he's almost begging obi wan to see his side of things and help him. Dooku wanted to kill Sidious just like the Jedi.
@@KingKayro87 unarmed? unheaded too 🤣
Really cool to see Gurren Lagann here, if the point of the series wasn't that humans have basically no limits, then it would have been interesting to see a Simon agreeing with the Anti-Spiral and basically doing the same as Lord Genome

What I like about Dracula is he admits hes wrong during his rampage. He sees Isaac as a human truly worthy of life and he sees him as good, so he sends him away. Both for Isaacs own good but also because seeing Isaac makes him feel guilty for taking out his heartache on humanity. Its also why he grows weak and tired throughout the show because he doesnt even care about it anymore, not really atleast.
One of my favorite part about pain and madara is that by losing madara accidentally did what pain tried to do
I don’t think it was much of an accident. I think obito agreed with pain to an extent which is why he started the war cause if you think about it there wasn’t much of a need for that he could’ve just pinned down the locations of naruto and bee and completed project tsuki no me in secret but instead he wanted to show the world despair and pain.
Lelouch should have been on here as he, like pain, became a symbol of hate and sacrifices himself to create world peace.

The problem with Thanos, is the fact that he has stones that he can do literally anything with, and he decided to kill half of people in the universe, rather than doubling space, and resources.
You can’t create more space or create more galaxies or something like that with the help of infinity stones. Infinity stones doesn’t provide the power to do that. And for the resources , if you think doubling the resources would work , you are have an average iq and you’re just normal with no speciality. Cause doubling the resources is a suicide. Its way more catastrophic and dangerous than thanos’s plan. Now i say your sentence in a different way. Thanos had the most power in the universe , he could do anything , he could rule the universe , he could slaughter every planet , he could kill anyone , he could be the most powerful maniac in the universe but he decided to save the universe and save the life the universe possessed. He could have done anything but he decided to save the universe

I love that Madara and Maruki were brought up here, nothing the heroes said disproved what they were trying to achieve. Like you said, what right do they have to stop everyone else from living an objectively better life just because they are somewhat fine with thier current reality?
Everyone should have a choice. Not just our main cast of characters
That is because the heroes in Naruto are stupid lol Naruto couldn't even give Pain a good reason to undo his plans, yet Pain still did. And Madara's plan sucked ass too. Is he going to mantain their physical bodies? Maybe the tree is able to do that but still, if everyone lives in a constant state of happiness forever and never have to work to get anything they want, be it power, lovers, etc then their happiness will eventually become meaningless to themselves and they will get depressed or numb. Just see how sudden millionaires get depressed so often.
There is no happiness if that's all there is. Happiness is relative. If they take away all struggle and pain in some alternate reality it would just be numb and meaningless. It's much better to work to achieve your own happiness by fighting against adversity.
@@NasuPrime but Maruki is also deciding for loads of people as well, he's decided that everyone should live in a perfect reality and has essentially robbed people who could grow and overcome their problems by themselves the opportunity to do so which is what Morgana and the other thieves were saying, Akechi keeps saying that he doesn't want to exist in this reality and would rather go back to the old one even if it means he's dead but despite that Maruki ignores that desire and forces him to live in this reality because he thinks it's best, the whole point of the third semester is that neither Maruki or the Thieves are entirely right or wrong they're both fighting for different groups of people but the Thieves ultimately have the moral high ground because life is cruel and will beat you down but if you have the power to overcome what life throws at you them you should because that's how you grow and evolve as people just like the thieves did throughout the whole game, so how is it not okay for the main characters to decide for everyone else but it's fine when Maruki does it? Not everybody would want his reality
@@PicaShing I think the issue really is that, there should be a way to allow each person to choose by themselves what life they want to live, if everyone could choose then you would have some people go live their old lives and some stay in this perfect reality, as in, to each their own.
Nasu this video is amazing. Your understanding and take on these characters and their philosophies is very deeply thought and all sides considered. I feel like these kinds of videos maybe gave you some fuel to reflect and understand these ideas deeply and really consider and understand where u.. urself lie and what u believe in. I think ppl truly love animes or shows like these because it allows them to see perspectives and emotions. And judge for themself, what is right and wrong. These kinds of shows, present a character and how they do bad things or evil things, at a glance. And then shows the motivation or pain it took the character to do the things they felt they had to do. Introspection on these philosophies have always been the most exciting and teaching moments in life. You dont know life, until you know pain and loss. Hating to sound like “pain” himself. But all these characters have this same philosophy and experience. They go through trauma and pain and in the end… only wants to rid themself and everyone else of it. I think these ppl.. had every potential to be heroes and amazing ppl. But lost their way. These characters are representations of the true martyrs in life. Ppl that have gone through things yet never receiving the acknowledgement or understanding of their pain. This leads to resentment, fear, hate, anger. Feeling of abandonment by ppl u cared for and loved. And yet thru it all.. most of these characters were committing all of these “villain” acts.. out of love, passion, or simply wanting a better life with no pain, loss, anguish. For everyone. What a rant. All this to say… good video Nasu. Really makes an impact. If not for everyone, atleast it made an impact on me.
Castleveina makes a really interesting point through its villains. Dracula gave the humans times to amend their wrongs and they had the hubris the celebrate. My favourite villain was hector. He agreed with dracula but wanted to save some life rather than slaughter. them all. He saw the evil in humans but wanted to preserve the innocent.
