La Palma volcano: Drone footage shows "miracle house" spared by lava

Drone footage captured images of a single home being spared from volcanic lava on Spain's La Palma island, with social media users calling it a "miracle house."
Streams of black lava have advanced slowly westward since Sunday, incinerating everything in their path, including houses, banana plantations and schools.
The lava has destroyed nearly 200 houses and forced thousands of people to flee. About 6,000 of La Palma's population of 80,000 have been evacuated since Sunday, as the Cumbre Vieja volcano continues to erupt.

    • Never get your science from the Discovery Channel. I am not saying there is no threat but any prediction of what risks there are associated with a landslide from this part of the island is a complicated question that books are and I am sure have been written about. If the entire west side of the combre vieja collapsed in a free fall landslide into the ocean then yes, the resulting tsunami would be hundreds of meters. But recent studies indicate that this is highly unlikely. More likely is that in the case of a collapse there would be numerous partial collapses that would be nothing nearly as severe. The Discovery Channel should be considered mainly as an entertainment channel. It is not serious science.

    • No amount of praying to imaginary fairies is going to help here. Only PEOPLE can assist, by helping evacuate victims and supporting them with food, clothes and shelter. You could spend the next 25,000 years on your knees fervently praying away - it will have no effect whatsoever. If you are truly concerned, fly out to The Canaries, open your wallet, get down there and assist.

    • @@CDN_Bookmouse Of course you have the right to question our religion. And to try to answer your question: Does your house matter more than your spiritual being? Why would God protect your present house? Is your house important for your development or an obstacle to overcome? We, as humans, don't know the reason why their houses were destroyed. Only that, at the end of everything, the truth will be revealed for the ones that suffered this tragedy. Where will they be 20 years from here? And does this event hold any significance for other people who watches from different countries that may end up inspiring them to take certain life changing actions? Are the houses that were not destroyed necessary for some reason? Then again, we don't know. That's why we talk about "miracles" and "misteries". If we actually knew, those words and this tragedy itself would lose purpose. What merit would there be if we lived expecting justifications from God? As if He owes us anything for our way of life.

    • @@CDN_Bookmouse Don't be manipulative. We don't know what anyone can take from this situation. But one can not just give up on life because of this. What are you expecting from them? To kill themselves because they lost their homes? I believe the best for them is to start again and think of anything negative they had in their lost houses and try no to have those negative things in the new one. Why do you think that trying to overcome any kind of negative situation is something terrible? Even if you were an atheist you would think this is the logical answer.
