Spain: Eruption on the island of La Palma | DW Documentary

On the Spanish island of La Palma, the Cumbre Vieja volcano is spewing lava and ash, forcing residents from their homes. It’s a nightmare for the tourist destination, one of the Canary Islands off the north-west African coast. What will become of the island?
Two million years ago, the island was formed by nearby volcanoes. Today, the same phenomenon is causing many thousands of residents to fear losing their homes as lava and toxic gases pose a growing threat. One of them is Nieves Rodriguez, who says: "We have spent our whole lives here. It’s painful to give it all up." DW’s Norman Striegel spoke with numerous residents, as well as those offering help. He also met one or two people who are traveling to the island right now, to watch the volcano in action.

  • So pleased to watch a video that is focused mainly on the people who are most affected by this volcano event. Good reporting. There will be many stories to come, of that I am certain. Right now, the individuals interviewed are in survival mode because of this crisis. It is good that we hear their stories, whether anyone else approves of the mitigation first aid by caring people or not. There is never, ever, a shortage of opinions in this world. And this is mine.

One day sooner than people think, they will be weeping and nashing their teeth. I will pray for those who mock and don't believe. God bless.

  • We’ve seen footage of the dangerous lava flow but seeing the residents on the ground and what they’re having to endure with ash falling daily on their homes, streets, businesses is distressing!! Not to mention the horrible condition of the air they breathe!! Worst is fear of the unknown if new vents open causing the lava flow to destroy the land they know and the houses they live in!! It is good lava flows slowly giving them time they need to evacuate but their lives as they know will forever be changed!! Bless all LaPalma residents for safety 🙏🙏🙏🙏

  • 8:30, "nobody will buy bananas in this condition". This issue has now been addressed by the La Palma banana association, all affected bananas receive a sticker informing the buyer (further info in the local El Mundu newspaper), Public response is predominantly positive, they have no problem buying "scratched" bananas, they now know the inside is perfect.

    @markgerick3063@markgerick30632 жыл бұрын
    • @Mark Gerick While I agree with your first sentence (except it takes much time to renew life to where it was before a "natural" disaster), I respectfully question your logic on your second sentence. People, and generations of people, living everywhere, anywhere on this planet are just people. Period. Many of us do not realize we might be living on the edge, as you put it. I would posit that until any one of us is faced with a natural event (i.e., a volcanic eruption in our back yard, a hurricane, a tornado, a mag 7+ earthquake, a tsunami, etc.), or a human-made event (i.e., war, etc.), we should not judge why some people live where they live. Life is precious in all its forms on this planet. Disruption of life as we believe it to be, and for many reasons, is inevitable. Not sure I can really change that fact. But I will give it the old "heave-ho" as they say, and do my part where I live, as best as I can, given the choices my ancestors made for me, many eons ago.

  • All islands were formed when a volcanic eruption happened in the ocean and formed a mountain under the water. As such all islands are points of weakness(fault lines) of the earth, prone to another volcano happening again. Same as Japan is a weak point that's why it gets frequent earthquakes. Sending prayers to all those affected.

    @sweetbabe6806@sweetbabe68062 жыл бұрын
    • No, Japan is on the edge of the 'ring of fire', which is the edge of the plate. Volcanoes and volcanic eruptions do occur in the middle of plates but by and large, the occur at the edge in subduction zones (where one plate is dragged under another). Please Google 'plate tectonics' as this explains it all. Hawaii was caused by the plate travelling over a 'hotspot' (although in recent years there has been some debate about this). Similarly for the Canary Islands. But the vast majority of volcanoes are NOT 'hotspots' (which is what you appear to be referring to). They are a part of plate tectonics. And volcanoes do not occur merely on nor always create 'islands' (The USA is not an 'island', neither is Europe or Africa, or Iceland. Volcanoes exist in all of these continents). Plate tectonics is a fascinating subject and causes not just volcanic activity but earthquakes unconnected to volcanic activity, too.

It's all the people on the mainland who can't seem to wrap their minds around the concept of living near a volcano, even though it takes a lot less lives and property than tornadoes or hurricanes.

  • The western part of the volcano, the west flank, is extremely unstable and can slip into the Atlantic and cause an enormous tsunami. But the east side of the volcano is also at risk, especially if a strong volcanic eruption occurs, as is also the case with the western flank. The reason for that lies in the fact that the volcanic mountain is internally very porous and so saturated with water that, with a strong eruption, the water can suddenly vaporize and rip the volcano apart due to a steam explosion.

  • This is just a part of earth's changes in the climate and the main reason is the slowly changing position of the angle of axis of earth and its continuous process of earth's cycle of Procession as the angle of axis changes from 23.5 degrees tilt to almost 30 degrees tilt over a period of 25,800years and during the cycle of Procession the path of the sun across our skies changes with it the suns ecliptic circle changes so the path of the sun across our skies changes and the gravitational pull of the sun and moon effects the earth's surface although very slowly and earthquakes, tidal changes, weather conditions, all are part of the cycle of earth and there is more to come, but us humans are not causing climate change at all, it is because we little humans don't live long enough to see the full cycle of Procession and that is why temperatures are changing in the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere depending upon how far the cycle of Procession is at this point in time.
