The thing is that the reason there are so many plantations in that area is the reason they were/are at risk of volcano eruption and lava damage. Old volcanic soil is incredible fertile. That why humans have been settling near volcanoes and surrounding areas for centuries.

@@SCARRIOR Volcanic ash isn't a fertilizer, what you're talking about is volcanic soil which is very fertile but still not the same thing. After years of erosion, water running through it, the earth mixing, some extreme plants growing through it and then decomposing on top of it, make volcanic soil nutrient rich after decades from the volcano erupted. Lava run offs and piles of ash aren't fertile, as plants can't simply grow on them.

@@gangisspawn1 are you daft? Life is suffering and one can even argue that a life without any pain isn't worth living at all. Chaos changes things, that's how we've evolved into who we are now. We adapt to harsh changes, physically and mentally which prepares us for the coming future. That doesn't mean we shouldn't feel empathy for those going and growing through the unimaginable but wishing for nature to not coexist with us so that it saves us from some pain is plain stupid. I hope God gives these poor people the strength to hold on to hope of a better future and have faith in themselves, if not in any religion or God.
@@self4341 Am I daft? No. I don't belive so. It is simple logic we can't beat Mother Nature. The more we build, dam, pollute, or forget about the true power of nature. The more human injury and/ or loss there will be. Also not all evolution requires pain. Just like every human does not have to struggle, or suffer loss to have lived. Some live an entire lifetime that is blissful or non eventful. And not everyone needs to reside in a 1st or 2nd world country to live what they consider a fulfilling existence. Regardless we are all an interconnected global community. The actions and effects of some us can help or damage the rest. Chaos theory is wonderful in math and physics. However human behavior, cognition, emotion, and experience can not be categorized by chaos theory alone. You're entitled to your opinion which is the beauty of these platforms. And I agree with some of it, just not all. I even learned something new from your comment. Does that make me daft? Perhaps in your eyes. Which is fine. 😊

I have to say, I am quite impressed by the Spanish government's response to this tragedy. Had this happened elsewhere, the aftermath for the survivors probably would've looked very different.
@escorpiuser Coming from an outsider's perspective, I'm not entirely sure that's a bad thing. To be fair, financial assistance was provided, and houses are getting built for the survivors at the end of the day. If they however, have allotted money for their headquarters while neglecting the survivors, then that's a different story for sure.
@@elokarl04 Dont believe that guy, the relief budget is over 210 millions, and the "party head quarters" fairy tale is just bullshit, in reality the goverment is renewing a VERY OLD UGT (UGT is an important union here in Spain) building (not the gov party headquarters) that is in risk of collapse. You see, we have kind of a new fascist trumpist pest problem in Spain, and they like to spread misinformation around. Real facts and verified info are the best pesticide against them.
If the Conservative/Fascists had been ruling they would have used 10 million for their headquarters and 0 for the victims.
@escorpiuser So? They are obviously not using public funds for their private headquarters, how is that even comparable, or more importantly, relevant here? i feel like for communities near active volcanoes, there should be some kind of infrastructure to minimise damage done when said volcano erupts e.g. maybe something like a canal meant for diverting possible incoming lava away from the area. May be costly and difficult to build seeing as they would have to account for how slowly the lava will flow so that the thing is deep enough to prevent the lava from over flowing, but honestly i feel like that would be better than just hoping it wont erupt or just hoping that the damage would be minimal
The whole island stands on top of a volcano. It is impossible to say where the eruption will happen and therefore what you said can't be considered.
@@amorenx oh so there is no singular opening? I see my didn’t realise that.
@@DerpyDucky there's a single tube that feeds the magma up into the chamber but any weak point can act as the breach (why you see multiple flows) its just most comes from the top due to it being the weakest point in a volcano, think of it like a bottle of soda its easy to pour out of the top because of the hole but make a crack or mark anywhere and it could just as easily flow from there, Also I think if I remember similar methods have been tried to stop a lava flow none we know of 100% works (including bombing its real)

Reading the other comments I see that this isn't possible (I know nothing about volcanos!) But I do hope scientists in this field could come up with a way to minimise damage. Warning systems in place are all good and fine in minimising damage to human lives but what if there really was a way to make a type of volcano canal! Wouldn't that be amazing. Is it possible to build large canal like structures that would allow the lava to flow in a specific area/direction and keep housing out of that trench?
Lava makes its own « pipes ». Meaning if there was a canal, the lava would cool around it and block it up. So no
The problem with that is that you don't know where the next eruption will be. It's multiple volcanoes with multiple chimneys so making canals for each is just an overkill solution imo...
They do that in Japan but the lava is way stronger than concrete or any material we can build so it would work for a couple of hours maybe

Realistically, if this happened in the USA, there would have been injuries and deaths of people who didn't obey the instructions to leave witthin five minutes and I'm not sure that the government would pay people who lost their houses the equivalent of $75,000. So while the erruption was a real tragedy, I suspect if the same thing happened in America, it would have been far worse.

People build their lives around volcanoes and then they wonder why there's lava in the living room.
Nobody is wondering anything, they know they live in volcanoes and that an eruption can happen. They knew before hand that the volcano was gonna erupt, that's why no one died. You think that people started living and building in the islands 50 years ago or what? People have been living there for centuries. Their parents, grandparents, great grandparents...
