  • The thing is that the reason there are so many plantations in that area is the reason they were/are at risk of volcano eruption and lava damage. Old volcanic soil is incredible fertile. That why humans have been settling near volcanoes and surrounding areas for centuries.

    • @@SCARRIOR Volcanic ash isn't a fertilizer, what you're talking about is volcanic soil which is very fertile but still not the same thing. After years of erosion, water running through it, the earth mixing, some extreme plants growing through it and then decomposing on top of it, make volcanic soil nutrient rich after decades from the volcano erupted. Lava run offs and piles of ash aren't fertile, as plants can't simply grow on them.

Meanwhile where i live in south Florida real estate is booming and we are under threats of hurricanes and flooding every year, not to mention that we will probably be underwater in 50-100 years. My grandparents and extended family come from these islands, i can tell you there is nothing stupid about it. These are the lands of our predecessors, and many people have built their lives there over generations of hard work. To give it up in the slim case there happens to be a volcanic eruption that affects your lands is stupid. There is nowhere truly safe on this earth, natural disasters affect most of us at one point or another; whether that's flooding, droughts, forest fires, hurricanes, tornados, hail, earthquakes, you name it. We adapt to harsh changes, physically and mentally which prepares us for the coming future. That doesn't mean we shouldn't feel empathy for those going and growing through the unimaginable but wishing for nature to not coexist with us so that it saves us from some pain is plain stupid. I hope God gives these poor people the strength to hold on to hope of a better future and have faith in themselves, if not in any religion or God.

      @self4341@self43412 жыл бұрын
    • @@self4341 Am I daft? No. I don't belive so. It is simple logic we can't beat Mother Nature. The more we build, dam, pollute, or forget about the true power of nature. The more human injury and/ or loss there will be. Also not all evolution requires pain. Just like every human does not have to struggle, or suffer loss to have lived. Some live an entire lifetime that is blissful or non eventful. And not everyone needs to reside in a 1st or 2nd world country to live what they consider a fulfilling existence. Regardless we are all an interconnected global community. The actions and effects of some us can help or damage the rest. Chaos theory is wonderful in math and physics. However human behavior, cognition, emotion, and experience can not be categorized by chaos theory alone. You're entitled to your opinion which is the beauty of these platforms. And I agree with some of it, just not all. I even learned something new from your comment. Does that make me daft? Perhaps in your eyes. Which is fine. 😊

May be costly and difficult to build seeing as they would have to account for how slowly the lava will flow so that the thing is deep enough to prevent the lava from over flowing, but honestly i feel like that would be better than just hoping it wont erupt or just hoping that the damage would be minimal

    • Reading the other comments I see that this isn't possible (I know nothing about volcanos!) But I do hope scientists in this field could come up with a way to minimise damage. Warning systems in place are all good and fine in minimising damage to human lives but what if there really was a way to make a type of volcano canal! Wouldn't that be amazing. With all the advances in terraforming our planet I feel like this is something that could somehow be possible, if not a canal then something else.

So while the erruption was a real tragedy, I suspect if the same thing happened in America, it would have been far worse.

You think that people started living and building in the islands 50 years ago or what? People have been living there for centuries. Their parents, grandparents, great grandparents... They lived there too. Their work, house, family, everything is there. So please stop assuming things like "why are they living there? don't they know they live near a volcano?" Yes, the millions of people that reside in the Canary Islands know.

The cone of the volcano is easily visible from our living room window. It is still steaming, the air smells bad of sulphur dioxide occasionally (though not at dangerous concentrations) and there is a layer of pale yellow sulphur on the top and the flanks of the volcano.
