We all know someone with psychopathy.

But few know the truth about it. We’re helping change that… by helping you know the signs. Know about treatment options and resources. And know you’re not alone.
Carrie Barron, M.D., is director of Creativity for Resilience at Dell Medical School and an associate professor in the Department of Medical Education. She is also a board-certified psychiatrist, psychoanalyst and Positive Psychology Coach
She joins us today on zoom to discuss treating people with Psychopathy.

  • 3:12 - I've found that videos like these-- mental health professionals explaining these difficult concepts in a straightforward way-- has been so helpful in understanding the confusing and contradictory experiences that come from being in a close relationship with someone with psychopathy. I can't thank you enough for sharing your insights.

  • Living with psychopaths, especially when there is schizophrenia thrown into the mix, can be very challenging. This video is validating and helpful. I never thought there was a way of helping them fit in better. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

  • My experience is that some have been taught (through good intentions) by their parents how to “act,” and thus they have an uncanny ability to get away with behavior by seeming to fit in or faking it.

    • Robert D. Hare in "Without Conscience" said exactly that in his book. When this doctor talked about treating people by telling them how to act I thought, "Uh Oh."

  • Can there be mild forms of psychopathy?

    @JohnSmith-pl4sf@JohnSmith-pl4sf Жыл бұрын
    • Yes- it exists on a spectrum. One type of testing involved often used is the Hare Psychopathy checklist, which ranks out of 40. I believe Ted Bundy scored the highest (that we know of) at 39. But like anything it’s a spectrum. There’s typically two types of people with psychopathy. Type 1. Criminal. These might be the rap ists and killers, but more likely to be white collar crime, forgery, art heists, etc. Type 2 is the corporate psychopaths. The Jeff Bezos, Elon Musks, Donald Trumps, Mark Zuckerbergs of the world (obviously they are an extreme example). But the corporate types thrive within the corporate world _although_ they are likely to have many interpersonal conflicts, as they will step on whoever they need to along the way. I would recommend seeking professional support if this is something present in your personal life. Also, Jon Ronsons book the psychopath test is brilliant, as is his famous Ted talk. Would highly recommend it,

  • So does the objectification of things by psychopaths extend to their perceiving things more in accordance with the shapes, colors, etc., rather than interpreting things like form, etc. based on the highlights, midtones, shadows, etc. as the brains of non-psychopaths do primarily by nature?

    @backforblood3421@backforblood34219 ай бұрын
  • I dont get that part where "punishment doesnt work but rewards do". There is no difference between punishment and reward, its just a matter of reframing. For example in prison (where theres a lot of psychopaths) inmates dont have sweets, coffee, cigarettes unless they behave well. What is that? a punishment for bad behavior or a reward for good behavior? Its a matter of framing, so how can one work and not the other?

    @martinhommel3420@martinhommel3420 Жыл бұрын
    • I can explain, punishment, if you are not in jail probably going to?, or being able to take out from your job? I guess is a hostage situation, and rewards i guess to feed the literal hunger, like a kid, that why is so tiring?

    • Dude of course theres a difference, theyre almost opposite terms. Shes talking about positive and negative reinforcement. Reinforcing positive behaviour instead of focusing on punishing negatively. Give the person good words when they doing the right thing. Also works with reciprocity punishments, which means when they do something wrong they have to fix the situation or do the most reparative thing. In parenting is easier.

  • Incurable, avoid them at all costs if you happen to see behind their lies (which is super difficult). I have this strange sensation that these people were meant to 'cull the herd' from nature standpoint knowing that other apex predators could not make the job. Even though not all of them are killers, a lot of them manipulate to have power, money and sex (on both genders btw). The lowest of impulses.

I'm fairly confident that the psychopaths in positions of power have caused immense damage and that many of the large societal problems we have are precisely because we have psychopaths in those positions. I think this is one of the core issues with our society that psychopathic and narcissistic traits are rewarded with positions of power, which means that our leaders don't care about humanity
