Rico is the best, now. But being an ex kickboxer of 58 years, and being Dutch myself, I grew up in the kickboxing nation thatThe Netherlands is and always has been (MMA has only gotD populair here since 10 years or so.) I've seen the best come and go since the days of the legendary Rob Kaman. We have had champions in kickboxing and K1 through the years in all weight classes, like Ramon Dekkers, (muay thai) Niecky Holzken, Peter Aerts, Semmy Schildt, Ernesto Hoost, Remy Bonjanski, but also Dutch school fighters from Morocco like Badr, Tsurkey Saki, Surinam Spong , so its not just beause of the size of the average Dutchman. Dutch style kickboxing turned out to be one of the most effective ones. Still, however good Rico is, I doubt if he would have been as succesfull s he is nowadays as he would be in the days of K1 with opponents like Aerts, Hoost, Ray Sefo, Lebanner, Andy Hug, Stefan Leko, Mark Hunt. Mike Bernardo, and all the other Gods 0f the late 90s eatly 2000. But there is no doubt that he has been the best for years. Maybe not the most spectaculair of champs. but certainly the most succesfull and effective.
I think everyone would like to see a fight between Roman Kryklia and Rico Verhoeven. Roman is a very good fighter, I think this is the only good opponent at the moment to test Rico if he is worthy to be king. Make this fight in Saudi Arabia Sheiks, so many people want it.
…en meest bekendste onder Nederlanders die niet eens iets afweten van kick-boxing. I do follow kick boxing myself even had some kick-boxing instructions myself because it’s become so regular in every fitness centre in the Netherlands as part of the fitness programs. I come from the home town of Alister Overeem who I have seen training with my old fitness trainer once when he was coming back from a suspension after his Vegas adventure (he wasn’t a regular member) and was amazed to witness the forces of his kicks. It got me interested in this amazing sport!

And back to you. Ur the living proof that there isn't just rivalty between Holland and Motoco. I even dare to admit that Dutch style kickboxing has such high level because of the skulls, determination and fighting spirit of the Dutch/Mocro fighters.
Doing this for years and years, this man is a true legend.
The most damaging kicks of Rico are I think the low kicks on the inside of the back-leg of opponents. They are technically very difficult to plan just on the right moment but it’s an underrated kick because if he does it right long enough the other fighter cant stand on his legs anymore or becomes wobbly because the whole weight of fighters is mostly more on the back-leg then the front leg. It takes longer and looks less spectacular and he needs a good defense and adversaries who fight him look sometimes doing good in the beginning, but if they can’t bring down Rico those kicks become more and more a havoc. Many adversaries actually get injured because of the anslaught on the knee that is targeted and can’t fight further resulting in TKO’s because of that kick or get so focused in avoiding being kicked in such a way it opens opportunities for Rico to find other openings.
Good and correct comment. Great fight IQ. It does, however take a very talented fighter to effectly to kick that leg. And doing it wrong, brings you in a vulnarabe position.

He is real tactical fighter, which make a lot of his fights boring! But those people who also sya that don't even dare to step in the ring😂 but it can result in getting less money because the fight are not that "exciting". Still a big champ as he tries to win with mininal damage taken and win on points! And still nr 1 after so many years
His matches are boring to watch. But Glory has no competititon for him. He should go to another bond to make himself stronger.

I was so wrong about him when he came onto the scene. I thought just a young pretty-boy who wouldn't last. Boy was I wrong - gladly so. I think he's hands down the best Glory HW Champ ever. But overall would still rank Semmy Shilt as #1.

Loved this summary of Nico’s carrier. I’d like to remark on Badr Hari. Though hè fought under the Moroccan flag he is actually a Dutch man, loved by the Moroccan community in the Netherlands but hated by just about everybody else because hè was a bully and his bullying had actually caused a man’s death. That is why the fights between the two were followed by just about the entire Dutch nation!

Dutch style kickboxing is not for every one , the training is brutal . But these kickboxers do it for the sport , not much money to be made (Yet ) So its pure for the sport .

Muy thai is a whole different sport.. elbows and headers included. Kick boxing is a more limited fighting style.

He has unusually heavy legs for such a tall person, not more. Sammy showed what happens when he fights against someone bigger. He would never have gotten this far in the 90s.
I agree there was a lot more talent these days. Still. He defended the title for 9 years and the fight with Semmy was when he was a lot younger and less experienced. It would not be the same fight now. He beat Ben Saddik Twice by knockout. I think you do underestimate him Although I agree as you can read in my comment earlier, that the K1 Days were different times. But, except for Real knock out power, he has a great tactical skillset and great stamnia and endurance as the second fight with Ben Saddik shows. And he made Badr quit and simulate an injury twice. It would be very interesting to see him in those days. Unfortunately we do not have timemachines yet. So we will never know. Btw he also beat Gohkan. Which aint No walk in the park either

Badr faked an injury twice even he found out his best was not good enough and Rico stood up again. Badr has no endurance, just speed and technique. Thats not enough against Rico. He found out the hard way and quit. Twice!!!

Fun fact: badr never won ANY big titles in K1 nor in Glory. The fights he won against meaningful opponents all were close to retirement, like Peter, Sam and Ernesto. What a “legend”

That'd be the fight actually, I lean towards Rico because of his brutal leg kicks. Of course in all these comparisons none are in the cage w/ wrestling included. Francis is not a great wrestler but its a feather in his cap that when comparison are being made its always him going into someone's back yard so to speak. The actual baddest man on the planet now that Jones is injured comes dn to Rico/ Francis for me. They're almost exactly same size too.

That depends. In an Octagon. Rico would probably not win. . Rico is a kickboxer,he never wrestled a day in his life. Nore did he practice bjj or Sambo. Micheal Jordan would not have a chance in soccer against Mezzi neither. These dumb compares always have annoyed me. But to go along with it. Francis would not have a chance in a ring with Kickboxing rules. I remember Bob Sapp storming like the Yankee steroid mutant he is, at Peter Aerts. In K1 ones. He immediately got kneeyed in the liver and fell down like the Twin Towers and never stood up. The same would happen to Nganou in a Kickboxing match. Rico would not even let him get close and if he did he would clinch and stop the attack. Francis is a beast. And he is no Bob Sapp. But he ain't no kickboxer nore is he unbeatable. He nearly won over Cyril Cane who is also a kickbokser, with MMA rules but not half the kickboxer Rico is. You overestimate the strength of Nganou and underestimate the skills and size of Rico which is the heavyweight Champion of the world for 9 years. Hoe many Giants do you think he beat in 9 years? He would chop Francis down like a lumberjack chops down a Douglas pine. MMA rules Francis would Win. If he would be able to close the distanc. Which I doubt. Rico is a lot bigger than Stipe is. And a whole lot more agile and atletic. And we all know what he did with Francis the First time they met. Remember?

Kick boxing needs to be more than three rounds. Every fight goes to the judges. Let's see when they have to go six rounds? All about stamina. even with the kicking, a same aged Tyson would pawn these guys.
Three to five rounds encourages them to fight harder which is why the average kickboxing fight is more exciting than boxing. Boxing should have less rounds to encourage this and not waste people's time too. Tyson could have been decent in Kickboxing it legends like Schilt and Verhoeven could have taken him. A current Glory contender like Levi Rigters would have taken Tyson
