Today I am talking about LOCKER yes LOCKERS, If you are new to 4WD you might have casually heard about them and possibly don't fully understand them all you know is that you need them....or do you? everyone talks about them..... when there's a land cruiser up for sale on Marketplace the first thing people ask is........ does it have lockers?

What are lockers?
The short answer is lockers distribute power evenly to each wheel on the diff, this is important in 4WD situations because most diffs that come from the factory are open.
And you might be thinking my Land Cruiser is full time 4wd the power is already distributed evenly to each wheel and they all spin at the same time....right? well no......
I talk about the 80 Series land cruiser and the triple locked 80 series FJ80 FZJ80 and LX450.
A triple lock LX450 was gifted to me by a very dear friend. A front wheel bearing went out and it sat for a long time awaiting a repair. The property where it sat changed owners and it was going to be scrapped. I crawled in mud to load it and take it home. All the mechanical is finally fixed and now it is just cosmetics. I feel like I hit the lottery. I have 3 4X4's but this is my queen. She is 100% royalty. My friend said the odometer quit 12 years ago at over 300,000 and he said he was certain she had 500,000 miles on her. No rust. Garaged kept. Always maintained at a Lexus dealership. Original drive train. If they have cars in heaven this is the one that everybody would drive!!!!!
When i was looking for my 80 series, i wanted factory lockers, but i figured it was not realistic after seeing the prices and availability. I found 96' that had under 200k and triple locked. I'm Pretty sure the dealer didn't not know what he had, because i got for $6k. Only have locked all 3 diffs a few times, but I'm happy I had them on n those situations. Informative channel, brother!

100% agree, most people Want and ask about lockers but have never owned a vehicle with lockers and have never used any in their lives lol. Most people do not even go off-road nearly enough to where they would need even a center diff lock. Just like all the puppies buying the new 5th gen 4Runners even though an SR5 is more than enough for them they are not even doing serious off-roading they have to buy the top level TRD pro just to look cool and put a bunch of overlanding gear on it to go off-road maybe a mile a year

I bought new 80 series in 91 and traded in 93 to the triple locker. I didn’t notice a big diff other than brakes were much much better. They increased the disc size.

Although I have it all, I still like to watch people speaking about the legendary 80 series Land Cruiser. My truck is a 97 all time 4 wheel drive triple locked manual full option FZJ80. It cannot get better than that :-) It was a dream came to reality. Thank you Allah for all you've given me.

Lol...I tought mine does but not...just have the plug for the cdl switch behind the radio that I never know until today and I'm owned this car about 15 years lol....thanks for the beautiful video..thats explain everything why they want triple locked landcruiser. ( I never had issues get out from mad and snow) this car a tank even with out triple lock...lol
I was once offered to buy an 80 series ( I was quite new in the Cruisers back then). Not only was it triple-locked, but it also had a sunroof, a factory winch, and a 1HD-FTE engine under the bonnet (a super good Engine!). But I kind of hesitated to buy it cause I thought the 1HD-FTE (that originally came) in the 100 series was the result of a swap (I am most a 60 and 40 series guy :) ). I was reluctant because of lots of stories were saying back then that a swap of the 1HD-FTE into an 80 series was no easy job and not always well performed by a lot of mechanics and would result in many issues. However, very recently I read in a LC forum that a very, very few number of 80 series came with 1HD-FTE in them (that is, they're extremely RARE!). I have NOT been able to check that information from any official source. If that ever happens to true.... then I already know what my greatest regret in the automobile will be...
Great video on the mighty 80. The five steps to unstuck yourself. If you don't have lockers that's okay, skip steps 2 and 3. Your checklist: 1. Going through some minor hairy stuff, Engage CDL 2. Uh-oh, I need to get out of this muddy off-camber rut, engage rear-locker, unstuck 3. Uh Oh-$#!=%, this is a crazy incline, huge rocks, muddy off-camber and I need to get past this, engage front-locker 4. I'm just stuck, throw the tracks under the tires 5. Winch up and out.
Differential gear is for compact cornering and all vehicles have it. landcruser just has a lock function of it for cross country situation.
My understanding is that there are no reduction gears kit for difs with OEM lockers. Something to think about if you want the 3xLocked TLC and you want to add bigger tires.
Yes you can change gear’s with lockers. Friend just put in 4.56. Then there is a nice option to add reduction, or increase ratios by simply changing gears in the transfer case. Each option is around the same price unless diy. Need a lower low range? $900, 23’ for t case gear last I added it up.
Most 4x4's are 2 wheel drive. 1 in front 1 in rear. Front and rear lockers give you true 4x4. And your transfer case can also be locked. If you want to run the rocks ya better be locked up
When 4x4's are 2 wheel drive it is the 2 wheels on the rear axle. Putting it in 4wd then sends drive through the transfer case to the 2 wheels on the front axle - 4 wheel driving🙂👍
Had a ‘94 trip lock but the electrics were fried, would have cost almost as much as ARB air lockers to fix it properly plus ARB’s have no delay kicking in. So I got a better shape ‘96 center diff only and left it stock so far. If I ever need triple lockers I’ll pay up but if shtf I’d realistically just put a Detroit LSD in the back.
I have the 40th 97 and actually i have no idea if my is the triple look one , when going to 4low it’s showing that is located and that’s it , is there something else to look for? Or my dose that automatically?
I really want to buy lockers for my 62 series. I would like a 80 series but it just doesn’t speak to me the way my 62 does. When I was young my mom and dad had a triple locked one, very very cool and capable machine shouldn’t have sold it. Great video 👍👍

G wagons have triple lockers but it cost a lot more. That said you can put in after market lockers.

Congratulations, you now are the proud owner of one of the best 4wd's ever made. I've had my 1992 turbo diesel 80 series for 15 years. Watch a lot of videos, read 4wding magazines/articles, and go 4wding. When things look too challenging, back off, so you don't drown or break your cruiser, and you will steadily become more knowledgeable and experienced. The more experienced you become, the fewer times you will need to back off. Join a 4wd club to get lots of experience and knowledge quickly. Enjoy, and look after it.🙂👍
What is the difference between center locking differential and shifting from 2WD to 4WD High (4x2 to 4x4 high) in any other truck that has a transfer case?
4wd - on loose, uneven ground, drive can go to just one spinning wheel with no traction, resulting in....no traction/movement. Same car with center diff lock - 50% drive to rear axle and 50 % drive to front axle, so on loose uneven ground, you would need 2 spinning wheels to have no traction/movement. So, much more traction. I have a 1992 turbo diesel 80 series Landcruiser, when I have been 4wding I have sometimes driven up steep hills where I have lost traction, so after backing down the hill, I pressed the center diff lock button on the dash, and then got up the hill no problems. Now I just have to install front and rear diff locks.👍

1993, 1991-92 FJ80s don’t have ABS or full disks, but drums in the rear.

I have a Tacoma with the rear e-locker. This is good. Later this year I will re-gear my truck and, at this time, with the front differential disassembled, I will install a front diff lock. So then it will be twin locked. My question is, what is triple locked? Doesn't a transfer case already lock the front and rear driveline together? Wouldn't the LandCruiser 80 have a transfer case? Does it actually have a center differential? Does the 80 series have both a transfer case and center differential? Does that even make sense? Confused.
80 series land cruiser is Full Time 4WD, so when its on regular road conditions its distributing power to all 4 wheels however in off-roading conditions there is often times when a wheel is off the ground or a wheel is stuck in mud. So it sends more traction to it thinking it needs it. Since its Full Time 4WD if one wheel is off the ground then it sends all power to that wheel ( Path of least resistance) because it thinks it needs more traction. to avoid this you turn on the CLD ( yes that means the transferase also has a diff) that allows it to split power to the front diff and rear diff. 3x locked is essentially twin locked but because land cruiser is Full time 4wd we need a Center Locking Diff to split power evenly between front and rear.

@@LNDCRUZIN Not all are full time. There are some part time 4wd, like mine. The good thing about part time is that when 4wd is engaged, it's essentially like with locked central diff.
What's the difference between center diff lock and front/rear differential lock?
Land Cruisers are Full Time 4 Wheel Drive it means that one wheel is getting all the torque at any point in time. When you click Center locking diff its one wheel in the front and one wheel in the back 50/50 torque essentially two wheel drive. when you engage the back locker its 3 wheel drive 25/25/50 torque two in the back and one in the front and when you engage the 3rd locker the front one you have true 4wd. 25/25/25/25 torque all wheels have an equal amount of torque. I will explain it a bit better in another video coming soon.

Have you ever gotten yours stuck with open diffs? These trucks seem pretty damn capable even without lockers. Especially if you aren’t doing any crawling where you’ll cross axles, do you think open diffs are fine for most off-road applications? (Snow, sand, mud, wet trails)
They are still very capable without lockers and will be plenty good enough for 90% of applications.

You didnt really do your own question justice. "Are lockers right for you"? All you talked about was the most basic aspect of what they do. You didnt explain WHY 99% of 4WD vehicles DON'T come with them, and the many problems caused by having locked axles. (the reason manufacturers dont put them in vehicles) They are terrible for normal driving, terrible on pavement, ruin gas mileage, destroy tires on concrete, cause extreme stress on all axle components when on pavement, cause your inside tires to chirp and skip on pavement in sharp turns etc etc etc.... Lots of newbies who want to "4 wheel" once in a blue moon, go out and spend $1500 an axle to have locking differentials installed, and then they get their truck back and its their worst nightmare. (except the 1 or 2 days a month they go off road) The fact is, limited slip differentials that many Toyotas came with, are made that way because they work the best for 99% of people. It allows tires to spin at different speeds, which is crucial when turning. Or else you bend parts and wear out tires. Anyhow, I just touched the tip of the iceberg on this. Suffice it to say, if you're a newbie, DO NOT buy lockers "just because". Do your research! Lockers are best on vehicles used SOLELY off road, and a bad idea for casual 4 wheeling.
You only engage the lockers when you need them. Just because your vehicle has lockers, doesn’t mean you are driving around town on pavement with your differentials locked 100% of the time. When you are driving around town your differentials function as normal. When you go off road once in a blue moon, you push the button, turn the dial and engage them as needed. Then you turn the dial back and unlock them.

Only a Toyota has to be triple locked to go off road, and thats why they are so expensive! I can go where ever they go with my stock XJ!
Yea but the stock XJ won’t last near as long as a Land Cruiser just sayin… especially now days that jeep is fiat owned. I had a 2014 rubicon e lockers front/rear 4:1 t case bought it with 10k at 50k engine started making noise. Recommendation was at 100-120k to change the timing chains. Toyotas will go way longer than that. More reliable less expensive to maintain.
@joemeyer6592 You obviously don't know what Jeep I am speaking of. The XJ"s started in the 80s and ended in 2001. They are the Cherokee with the 4.0 liter straight 6 that are bulletproof. You see more XJ's in the deserts, mountains, mud, water, whatever, then you will ever see Toyota products! Maybe you can go see for yourself with your truck. Bahahahahahaha! My 1998 Cherokee has 190k on it, and it still runs strong. But most of these Cherokees have 200k to 500k miles on one motor and are still driving. I drive mine dally and have 33x12.5x15 tires on 12.5x15 rims. And I know you will not take your truck and follow me! Bahahahahaha!

Yo, no offense or anything but your video makes it clear that you don't actually understand how 4 wheel drive works or why lockers work. The whole point of differentials (diffs) is to ALLOW both wheels on the same axle to spin at different rates. Think about when you TURN your vehicle. if you take a turn, both of your front tires turn in the same direction and if you just drove in a big circle, one of your wheels actually travels more distance than the other on both your axles (if you have two). Both inside wheels make a smaller concentric circle within the outer tires' circle. That is what a differential does and that is why open diffs aren't always your friend off road. However, if you "lock" the differential, the wheels must turn the same rate. If you tried to turn in a circle with a locked diff, you'd find it difficult to control the truck and you'd hear a lot of tire noise as your inner tires try to travel a shorter distance while turning at the same rate as your outer tires. The diff can't do it's job of letting your tires turn at different rates, which is actually what it's designed to do so that again, you can TURN while receiving power from the engine to that axle. A locked diff turns a complicated mechanical mechanism into a simpler one, which forces both wheels to turn at the same time and receive the same power from the engine. Why do this? A locked diff can actually be helpful if you only have one wheel getting good traction but, since that wheel experiences more torque due to that increased traction, only the other wheel will turn that has less traction. This is how you get a spinning wheel on one side with a simple open diff. The diff's mechanism unintentionally pushes power to wheels that spin, not the wheels that have traction. With a locked diff, that wheel with the traction suddenly gets power while the spinning one is limited to 50% from whatever the axle gets from the engine and it can help quite a bit to climb steep grades or traverse deeply rutted roads.

Thanks for your honesty, I did it as a social experiment and to tell you the truth Ive gotten more view this way... unfortunately when my videos says 300 views people are less compelled to watch them. No matter how many hours I've put into it. Ive also gotten a ton of feedback which has helped produce better videos. If you feel its deceptive I understand, but the 5 min it takes you to watch a video it takes me 5 hours to put together. Sit back and enjoy I mean no harm I don't make money off this I do it for fun, I have have a full time job I'm not a 'KZheadr' and i don't pretend to be one Im just a regular dude that makes videos about land cruisers on his spare time and works on his other 4 wheelers on weekends anyway.
