Install honeybee packages & prepare them for extreme cold weather.
Bonus Footage:
While inspecting my latest Honeybee colony packages, I found 2 male bees (Drones) hitching a ride with the girls.
I've never seen male drone bees come with new packages, albeit, they are around when the packages are being made so it only stands to reason that sometimes you could find them in with or straggling along on the outside.
Male (drone) bees are a sign of a healthy hive but when they're no longer needed or when times get tough, the worker and nurse bees refuse to feed them and they die.
In this video the nurse bees are feeding the drones through the screen covering.

  • For someone that doesn’t keep bees, that was fun and interesting to watch. Thank you for sharing. I will have to scroll through your vids but, do you have a series of bee keeping vids? I would be interested to watch more. Ty

    • Thank you very much I only have a few beekeeping videos but I have some other b-roll footage that I’ve been thinking of putting into a video. My friend has 7,000+ hives so what I do seems tiny! I have beaten varroa mites AND foul brood with natural wholistic methods that my friend now employs. This summer as I treat my bees I’ll film it and show the world what I do. Thanks for a very nice comment. Brad

  • Have you had any problems with bears? What do you recommend to keep bears from destroying hives? I would prefer not to have an electric fence. I have put ratchet straps over my hive bodies so they will not come apart. I am considering adding a loud siren that will sound when the hives are shaken. You come up with some great ideas and I would like to hear what works for you. Also, for many years I have not used a smoker. I put 2 or 3 drops of natural essential peppermint oil into a teaspoon of Everclear (alcohol) then mix that with a quart of water. I put it into a spray bottle and mist the bees with it. I read about this method many years ago. No danger of starting wildfires, smokers going out just as the bees get defensive and no breathing smoke. I work my bees bare handed as you do with a veil to protect my eyes and head. Thank you for all the great information you have provided.

    • Knock on wood, we haven’t had an issue with bears. Our ranch dogs are leery about wolves and keep their distance but will go after coyotes and bears and chase them off. If you don’t have dogs, I would suggest splashing ammonia or bleach or bleach cleanser around your hives. It won’t bother the bees but the sensitive nose of a bear will not like it at all. Good Luck. Report back on your success.
