About the Reflection, if you watch the Official Trailer (one), not this video, there's an instrumental play of it. About the Cricket, I think they need removed it because, it doesn't have a voice also from the animation so in this live-action, it will be just a cricket now.

Honestly the best example of this is the lion king remake. I hardly doubt in real life you’ll see two cubs jumping on elephants and making wild expressions. That’s the magic of animation, there’s no rules or boundaries of how you draw the characters. The scene where the dad dies samba is crying and obviously traumatised from his fathers death. In the remake version, simba sees his dead father and the actor starts to cry but simba wasn’t crying, he just looking at his dad while moving his mouth slightly. Like his faces was just the same for the entire movie. I regret letting my mum force our family to see the lion king remake.

The more I see the trailer the more I’m ok with not having Mushu, but then I see something else’s that bothers me. Her father’s sword is not the same design as the animated movie and it bothers be because as a child that sword has always been a cool looking sword.

They probably left Mushu out because China was outraged at that addition to the ballad of Mulan. A witch on the other hand is more common to Chinese mythology and wuxia fiction than a small guardian dragon. Dragons in Chinese mythology are always a super sacred (and Powerful) beast, up there with the Phoenix, Qilin, and Kun Peng, so making a "wimpy" so to speak dragon, no matter how lovable Mushu is, did not reflect Chinese culture and mythology. But hey, that's just my theory on why Chinese audiences were outraged and I don't actually know why.

Well, he was. SPOILER ALERT In the scene where she reveals herself and is at the top of the mountain, mushu is needed,since he is not there they make the witch do that part which makes no sense, since the new characters they added are quite stupid to be honest. They dont add to the story at all

@Joshua Rivers The reason Mushu is not in it is because it's made for the Chinese audience and his character doesn't fit the Chinese cultural narrative of how a dragon is and should behave. A dragon in Chinese culture is a divine creature revered as a god it has no moral flaws. The decision has nothing to do with the original story or the cartoon it's just a way to appease the Chinese audience, there is a lot of $$$ to be had in that market.

At the end, I felt bad for the eagle, she had died because she realized she knew Hua Mulan was not a scorndog, and when the enemy was about to kill the emperor of China, he shot an arrow straight at Mulan, but the woman saved her life, that was really sad and shocking, but not only did Mulan get saved by a girl who died, but she lost her father's favourite sword, but after they defeated the tribe, Hua Mulan received a better sword for her award of helping the army as a disguise, but revealing herself made a big change to everyone. So from that day forward, Mulan was the hero of China's tribe. It was amazing to watch this movie.

I also like how Mulan said, "Here I stand, proof that there's room for people like us." By saying this, she was including the witch and acknowledging that, though they're fighting on opposite sides, they're both women taking on roles their culture deems traditionally masculine. And by having Mulan recognize and voice that, the filmmakers are bringing up a point which needs to be heard now more than ever: Breaking society's rules is neither good nor bad in and of itself; how you obtain such an unconventional role and what you do with it determines whether it will have positive or negative effects.

As a Mongolian , this history was plotted way before the Chinggis Khaan. “Khan” basically means king in our language terms. If you can check, the Kingdom called “Hun” as we cal “Hunnu Dynasty” has attacked China. So therefore they are related by timely it was way different.
Perhaps Mulan's father was the war hero that killed Bori Khan's father:)

Looking at the trailer itself, although witch is on the opposite side of Mulan, she seems like the one who connects with Mulan's identity crisis. When other northern invaders refer to Mulan as 'a girl', witch corrects it as 'a warrior'. On the other trailers, witch says to Mulan "When they find out who you are, they will show you no mercy"- possibly a reason why witch is on the antagonist's side. However Mulan still contradicts witch's words "here I stand, proof there is a place for people like 'us'". Certainly something is going on between the two female characters that goes beyond 1 dimensional jealosy induced animosity like the one presented in Snow whites.

When Xiang Liang corrected Bori Khan and emphasized that Mulan is a "warrior," not so much as a stereotyped "girl," I wonder if Xiang Liang's smile is one of admiration or just a smug smile:) Can't wait to see the more complicated heroine-villain relationship in this movie. Love the increased sophistication (and realism) in modern Disney films!
Also, when Xiang Liang told Mulan that "when they find out who you are, they will show you no mercy" and "you will die pretending to be something you are not," I wonder if those are kind warnings or just attempts to discourage after seeing her as a threat. Xiang Liang sounds like the former to me but then she attacked Mulan? Looks like there is a complex storyline indeed.

Realism? I would say they chose aesthetics instead of realism, which makes sense for a Disney movie.

@@alfgui3295 Actually, I mean then their relationship would be more real -- because it is more 3-dimensional. Real-life characters and inter-people relationships are generally more complex than past Disney movies portrayed. That's why I think the increased sophistication in the movies adds to their realism.

Sometimes I believe the disney "fans" are the same as the star wars "fans". They only know how to complain and bitch but in the end they will still spend money to watch it. I mean look how people bitched about Captain Marvel when it came out; they claimed it would flop. And after the movie was released all of the sudden people said that it was actually entertaining. But in the end they wont understand that complaining before the movie is released is stupid.

For me it depends on the movie. Tarzan could have been kept the same. They missed out on using new technology for that movie. This one looks different and I know why, they wanted to be true to the original story, but I also feel like the missed opportunities to use the new technology. But if Eddie Murphy wasn’t gonna be mushu then what would have been the point. I like the way it looks though and the direction they went with it. I love Kong fu movies anyway so I’m looking forward to Exaggerated Kong Fu with the big budget.

I already watched the movie and I love it the way it is, but it feels like there's something missing, since I cannot bear the fact that I watched the animated movie. The character development is not well focused, there more on scenery. But still I love the movie, it's just I'm not well satisfied.

This live action is the most realistic in plot so far.
I mean... it does look VERY different from the original, but i love it, and the song makes me feel so powerful, i wasn't even excited, but honestly i want to see it now.

*I really hope* they don't make Mulan a complete badass from the beginning... The main thing I love about Mulan is Mulan herself; she's the underdog. She always screwed up and never felt like she could do anything right or be capable of bringing her family honor. She's relatable and inspirational in the sense that she, like all of us at one point, feels worthless in the face of her society and feels like she can't do anything right. Mulan was never about witches or wars, it was about showing that there is more than one way to bring yourself and your family "honor" and that doesn't have to follow the sexist (or other) traditions of society. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to see this movie the trailer looks cool- but God I hope they don't make her seem like she always knew her purpose in life was to join a war and save her country... I hope she's Mulan.
According to the actual legend as per Wikipedia: "She is already skilled in fighting, having been taught martial arts, sword fighting, and archery by the time she enlists in the army." So she was a badass. One could say she was a Mary Sue before the term had been invented. ;)

Going through the comments it really hurts to see how basic a lot of people are. Sure, Mushu was fun but his character as portrayed in the animated movie wouldn't fit with this new adaptation.

That's because this isn't so much of a remake as a near-complete re-imagining. Disney decided this time to have their version match closer with the original Ballad of Mulan from ancient China rather than "Disney-fy" everything like they did in the 1998 version. Sure, there will still be elements of Disney sprinkled in (e.g. the witch as a villain), and allusions to the original still exist (e.g. Mulan's actress Liu Yifei sings a new version of "Reflection"), but it looks like they're trying to stick closer to the source material.
