All The Ways Disney's Live-Action 'Mulan' Is Different From The Animated Movie | Pop Culture Decoded
Disney's live-action reimagining of "Mulan," directed by Niki Caro and starring Yifei Liu, made many changes to characters and story from the 1998 animated classic. Instead of Shan Yu, Mulan faces off against Böri Khan and a new shape-shifting villain named Xianniang. Meanwhile, Mulan's anthropomorphic sidekicks Mushu and Cri-Kee are replaced with two new characters in the live-action film. Other characters, like Li Shang, were split up into two separate characters. And while classic songs from "I'll Make a Man Out of You" are absent here, there are still references to them throughout. Many of the changes help bring Mulan closer to the ancient Chinese poem "The Ballad of Mulan."

All the Ways Disney's Live-Action 'Mulan' is Different From The Animated Movie | Pop Culture Decoded
I didn't like this version of Mulan. In the live action, I didn't like the character because she was the Chosen One with unusual amounts of Chi. I liked the animated Mulan character because she worked hard to become equal to her male counterparts in war simply through her wits and hard work to compensate for her lack of strength. She struggled but learned to overcome these physical challenges. The only struggle live-action Mulan really goes through is her ""true"" identity. The main appeal, at the heart of her character, of Mulan is her hard work ethic and ingenuity... at least, that was the main appeal for me when I was a little girl. Edit: Yes, I'm aware everyone has Chi, but my comment says she's a Chosen One because she has *unusual* amounts of Chi (at least for a girl).
Some would say that is a bigger struggle than anything.
@@KenpoKid77 I don't mean that I don't like the true identity struggle, but rather that it should not have been the *only* struggle. A character should have both a personal external and internal conflict. In fact, if a writer *really* knows what they want for the character, they'll develop the narrative in a way so that the character's internal conflict influences / is influenced by the external conflict.
@@NaomiTCOOKIES you got a point.
@@NaomiTCOOKIES u know what ..U GAVE THE PERFECT FAULT OF THE MOVIE....".THE CHOOSEN ONE " IS NOT A GOOD MORAL FOR THE VIEWERS the viewers must feel anyone can be great with hardwork ... without being choosen
The king also has Chi 🙄 They literally says everyone was born with chi, but her chi was Stronger and she been training since she was a kid 🙄
The most important difference is that it's inferior. It's visually pleasing, but joyless and low on character development.
exactly, some movie critic says its 'bland'
FACTS. JUST FINISHED WATCHING THE MOVIE AND YES ITS LACKS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, LIKE ITS SO FAST-PACED BUT NOT AT THE SAME TIME hahaha
Worse change was getting rid of mushu *spoiler* The Phoenix was really dumb and acted like a map cursor for the entire movie. Why even add it into the movie if it's only purpose is to be Google maps
I don't care the movie is good I liked it

Edward Jones oh hehe I meant to ask why to another commenter sorry
Nah, it’s the same but all the good parts from the animation are GONE lul
🤣🤣🤣
I can understand not having mushu and getting rid of all the “fantasy/ legend” factors (such as ancestors, mushu, etc.) but I feel like adding the ki and the Sorceress was a slap in the face because it’s not explained well and gives the movie an unnecessary “here’s the magic you wanted”
Not sure how it's a slap in the face, unless you mean people from the West who aren't familiar with thr concept of chi/ki. Seems to me it was made with a particular audience in mind People from the East, and anyone familiar with martial arts, like myself, are very familiar with chi/ki. That said, my wife, who's not familiar, still loved the movie because the issue of women being mistreated for being strong resonated with her. Besides, it's a Disney fantasy movie, based on a fantasy tale. It's not too far-fetched to have some magic in there.
@@KenpoKid77 "unless you mean people from the West who aren't familiar with thr concept of chi/ki" oh so you are a racist too? interesting... well, i mean, you probably are from china, the most racist country in the world... oh nvm, you are black, just saw ur vids xDD At least u said "familiar with martial arts" because i dont picture you practicing em xD Funny how you protect china and commy disney, when they always minimize and/or remove black people from their chinese posters to please their commy overlords...
@@saphi20 bro saying that China is the most racist country is a terrible thing as your saying all of them are generalizing them all and not everyone in the west have heard or understand chi or ki as much as some Asian countries do as IT ORIGINATED from asia and funny how you say that because of the past and some bad people you can't stand up for someone
exactly , you got it right I was reading comments and I this is the one could mostly relate to. I found chi and sorcerees was something not really needed but ruined the felling and dismay all logics
@Diego, how ironic when you’re the one who’s being racist. Did you get hurt because they simply just said “maybe the whites aren’t familiar with chi?” It makes sense, it’s in martial arts and everything and not many Americans practice it. People like you need to stop connecting everything with politics and races.
So let me get this straight: Grandma gone Haircut gone Arrow scene gone Li shang gone The songs gone Mushu and Crikey gone and instead we get yet another magic ‘I’m the chosen one’ story? Remind me, how is this still the same movie??
Remind me, how is this still the same movie?? I think you meant, ''How is this good?''
WHERE IS MY BISEXUAL LEGEND LI SHANG
@@grebby101 Yes! The conflicted army dude that was probably like "Man, I am so crushing on this recruit but it is forbidden..."

Diego it’s really good
@Clarice Tan not really.... I guess average, actually more subpar at best. I mean, my opinion
They did some of the changes like the phoenix to fit the chinese audience, culture and history.
And a worse one at that
I don’t like how taking off her protective battle gear and letting her hair down in the middle of battle is seen as her “ showing her true colors”. Like, what happened to the message of breaking gender stereotypes?! Why isn’t putting your hair up and wearing protective armor a woman’s thing
Because it is more obvious (visually) that she's a woman if she lets her hair down and discards her battle gear. It also acts as a "reveal" moment and can be interpreted as Mulan stripping off her facade. Also, for half of the movie, she had her hair up and the armour on, none of the people beside her thought she was a woman. She also looks beautiful with her hair down and her red robes on display.
Because symbolism, movie, etc, etc. Tying up their hair is something women do in the military because it's way more practical then having it fly about. They could've very well have her reveal herself during a break instead of the middle of a battle. P.S I haven't watched this movie, not even interested
@@anactualmole9565 There's no question that it's far more practical to have her hair tied up. By letting her hair down during the battle, the movie is giving the audience a visual cue that she is finally fighting as herself, which is easy for the audience to follow, evokes an uplifting feeling, and makes chronological sense (as she ************spoilers*********** * * *lets her hair down after her "facade" was metaphorically killed by the witch). If, after the battle, she lets her hair down during her reveal of her identity to her peers, it would only evoke negative feelings of her guilt and shame. Unless they change the plot and scenes, it makes more sense, in terms of narrative, to let down her hair during the battle. At the end of the day, it's a movie, not a demonstration of how one should fight IRL.
Why is a woman having long hair seen as bad?! Long hair has always been a part of female culture and we shouldn't be ashamed of that and have to cut our hair and become like men to prove we are equal! Tired of this not like other girls bs. It signifies her not being ashamed of her identity as a girl and her pride in generally female customs, in no way does it say women can't be otherwise. That is internalized misogyny, women shouldn't have to take feminity as weakness and we don't have to cut our hair to prove our strength! Periodt. We shouldn't be afraid of our feminity and feel like we have to hide or abandon it to prove equality for example a woman having a picture of her family in her office does not mean she is not concentrated on her work which most patriarchial shits take it as, but that she loves her family, and the fact that she is working does not mean she doesn't care about her family. This movie is about equality and the fact that she got to join the army which is male dominated without having her identity as female as a sign of weaknesses is even more of a breakthrough through gender stereotyping. In the original her having to cut her hair that is becoming the stereotype of men was seen as empowering and a sign of strength which it really isn't, it's just enforcing the norm that men are stronger and women must become like them to be considered strong or equal not that men must change and become more inclusive, so it wasn't really empowering or gender stereotype breaking tbh, it just reinforced the norm that men are stronger and more capable, and all men should have short hair and that a woman must abandon her feminity to become strong. Gosh it's 2020 I thought people would be smart enough to pick up on internalized misogyny by now and the not like other girls trend would stop.
@@sisthatsthetea1229 I agree with the overall message you're trying to send with your comment. I just want to point out that in Ancient China (I'm not sure from which period to which period though), Chinese men and women don't cut their hair, so Chinese men and women would have long hair in that era. They don't cut their hair because they see hair as something that was given to them by their parents. Something off topic that I read recently from a Chinese person on twitter, apparently Ancient Chinese people at that time would rarely let their hair down. Usually when they do, it's at a funeral. So, in retrospect and relation to my previous comments, Mulan letting her hair down here is culturally inaccurate. Furthermore, Mulan's hairstyle in this scene is a very modern western hairstyle, not at all like ancient Chinese hairstyles. Basically, Disney should have hired POC people for their directing, producing, and costume etc. teams instead of mostly/wholly white teams.
Ya'll Mushu legit carried the whole show! Even tho he was a little selfish he learned to help Mulan and bring her honor. There was a scene where Mulan was thinking about going back home but Mushu popes outta no where and told her that she should go(Even tho it's for him to get his position back lol)! Without Mushu, Mulan wouldn't have gotten that far and without Mulan, Mushu wouldn't have gotten that far too.
Other Missing Sock yeah!! they took out the good stuff that helps makes the movie very enjoyable and fascinating..
there was no emotional build up and the scenes were cut too quickly

@@KevinJ5974 XD
Disney was trying to be more faithful to chinese culture and the 1500+years legendary poem known as ballad of mulan. First of all lets start with the replacement of mulan's name as Fa mulan in the cartoon to Hua mulan in the remake, Fa is the other dialect (which is Cantonese) that people in guangdong and hongkong used and that is not accurate since mulan lived in northern china (northern wei dynasty) not southern china and Hua mulan is the correct one and Hua mulan means as "blossom magnolia". The emperor's name "son of heaven" also taken from the ballad. In ancient times man and woman had long hairstyle but styled in a different ways where man always made bun and girls comb their hair if you cut your hair it meant as a disgrace to your family thats why they took it off. mulan father was a noble war hero which was described in the ballad of mulan and her father trained her since she was a kid n it was accurate in the ballad that she already skilled even before she joined the army the animated mulan created different story by adding a sympathy that she didnt know everything. The phoenix fenghuang symbolizes both genders man and female n it suits mulan character as well as a replacement of dragon that cannot be used as a compannion, mushu was too direspectful since in chinese culture they potrayed dragon as big and powerful and often potrayed as the emperor not like tiny stupid little lizard with weird accent. The leader of the huns name also accurate to the ballad since they used "KHAN" because the northern invaders(the mongols or turkic) often called their leaders as "KHAN" but "BORI" was actually not the real name of their khan. In the beginning where mulan rides a horse and she finds out 2 rabbits running side by side was actually taken from the ballad and it is a metaphor. And the place where mulan lives not really that accurate it is fujian house it is located in china but not in northern china which every part of china has their own style of buildings. and the witch is a development character of the falcon from the animated. in chinese culture there's a woman who can shapeshift and it is called "fox spirit" or the nine tailed that use their powers to deceive people(evil spirit) with the practice of "taoism" which i thought that was a concept that disney has taken . Mulan identity has never revealed during the 12 years of war she was the one who revealed herself when her comrades visited her in her village and all of them were shocked but also happy and respected that mulan is a girl. The ending of the ballad was a metaphor from the 2 rabbits. The inaccuracy in this movie were the concept of "chi" which disney described it as a super power . And when mulan fought the huns in the battlefield they called her a witch and that was confusing me.

I hate this movie, because it's focused on 'look how cool and strong mulan is, she can fly and kick the arrow bla bla bla' the Mulan I know (from the animation obviously, not from the balad) is she's just strong enough, but not super. What really make her stand out is her creativity and that more appealing to me rather than flying Mulan in this movie. 5.5/10, don't recommend it.
Like Star Wars. An overpowered female character that doesn't have to achieve anything and has basically no weaknesses. Just bad characters
Uh how can you not be enthralled by Mary Sue chan? She's literally a not white woman overcoming adversity with ease. That's like....the pinnacle of art you bigot.

When mulan change here and there, you guys still complaint, it differ too much from animated. And it is a different movie. They never said it is based on the animated one. they still have the nostalgia glasses and culturally uneducated lenses on. That is why.
@Jenevieve Majoor at least new movie actually had more actors who are of the ethnicity and culture of the characters who playing them, and actually gave just a little more of a dam about respecting us chinese culture. Lion king remake was bad it be a carbon copy of original, the effects take away emotion, and characters have no expressiveness. I would watch nature documentary over lion king, as it has more beautiful colors and expressions. Also americans stop using nostalgia and culturally uneducated lenses, when criticizing films based in foreign cultures.
@Gi giag It most likely because it produced by lot of white people. Would been better if actually made by Chinese.
@Jenevieve Majoor What white people do whenever they make film about other cultures. disney especially.
THANK YOU!!!
i feel like disney rlly warped the entire mulan movies, both animated and live action. Firstly, the story of mulan is not abt feminism, its abt fidelity (more abt the fighting in her fathers place) , they alr f-ed it up in the animated movie, the msg was completely wrong, but it isnt the biggest issue as it is a western audience. Secondly, there were parts in the animated movie that was disrespectful to chinese culture like everyone's fave character mushu, dragons r like gods to the chinese, they are sacred beings, they r a huge part of our culture and symbolises good luck etc, when i say huge part, its pretty big, its on our clothing, statues, buildings everywhere, even the dragon dance is to ward off evil spirits during cny, so mushu's character was pretty disrespectful, since a huge symbol of chinese culture is used as comic relief etc. Thirdly, the witch watev it is in the live action is completely irrelevant, i was a lil upset when i saw her, and i legit dun get the point of chi i- Fourth, honestly idw a love interest for Mulan, i love Li Shang but as a kid, i found it weird that Mulan had a love interest since i grew up wif the legend of Hua Mulan, My parents and teachers always said its abt being filial to ur family and the story always centred ard mulan and her family, mostly her dad, so younger me dk wat was the point of li shang, even tho i did like his character. And lastly, i feel that its hard for western audience to understand the true story of Mulan which is why its so changed up as it has a lot to do wif our beliefs and values, the chinese has a heavy emphasis on honour, loyalty and fidelity to ur family, the west doesnt really emphasize that
I just like to add, in their culture, dragon is always refer to as a male symbol, where their female counter part would be the phoenix. These symbols are sacred to their culture, so seeing Mushu playing as a comedian in the animated version is kinda disrespectful to their culture. Though the animated film is made for western children entertainment but the general direction of the story is more or less there without the cute little insect and pets. It is a miss opportunity not to explore more of Mulan's inner world and her character progression through those period during war. Anyway this is Disney, they make film entertainment for younger audience, the X-men version would be more profitable for them.
@@sola4393 yep exactly, i think disney didnt do enough research and just wanted to appeal to western audiences only which is pretty sad for us asians/chinese, to see our story and our culture botched up like this

@@exxiyya4855 the thing is although the cast is all chinese, everyone behind the scenes were all definitely not chinese. I was so excited that they making it more realistic until i found out abt the witch and chi thing, like thats completely irrelevant and ruins the entire story. I was fine with the phoenix since dragon represents males and phoenix represents females so its a cool change that respects the culture, but if they put a dragon instead of a phoenix (so kinda like a more mature and respectful version of Mushu) it would have been okay too, but the stupid chi witch thing- it gets me so mad. Now everyone hates this movie which just ruins the story, i wish disney had just left our culture alone, as much as i love some representation. If u arent going to do it right, dont do it at all, i mean even the chinese dun rlly like it. Although, there was a lot missing from the animated version, I really enjoyed the action scenes. But still, I agree that nothing beats the animated version. ❤
@@glorygreen3405 Well, I totally respect that opinion, but if you just enjoy the movie and not compare it to the animated version...it's not *that* bad. The action scenes are amazing!
The reviews are horrible on this film, they need to stop live action remakes.
I’m fine with the live action remakes just make sure they don’t suck, 🤷🏿♀️
Aladdin and maleficent were good. Disney only sponsors the movies. It depends on the director who got offer from Disney. They better choose good directors in the future!
ikr theyre terrible but i read somewhere that walt disney said he wanted it all to be remade for future generations or smth
You mean the audience. Critiques had really good things to say. People are just whining cause they keep comparing this to the animation as if that was the accurate telling, weren't listening to the movie at all and expect the movie to do all the work for them, or just want to hate the movie cause of a tweet or a country's actions which is ridiculous and completely hypocritical
lmao, I'm just here waiting for people's same disappointed reactions when Disney released the Little Mermaid live action. I already knew Mulan 2020 is gonna be a dumpster fire when I first saw the trailer and people defended the hell out of it..it's almost enjoyable seeing how defeated we all feel about it.
let's just appreciate that characters actually look Asian this time
One thing i noticed was when Cricket from the liveaction was running from the avalanche and the catapult landed on him like he was trapped in a cage. I thought that was pretty creative.
i feel bad for the children who think that the live action is the original 😭😭😭
I’m glad they changed Mulan’s male name to Hua Jun from the original Fa Ping. I see what you did there Disney.
the dragon didn't work because its a symbol for an emperor not a commoner, it is well known.
I cant imagine how would they animate mushu and the cricket. Sad
Who could have guessed throwing out the original story for one focused on gender inequality would flop like a pancake?
But the original story also deals with gender inequality, that's not the problem, the script was just pretty bad.
@@NaFran49 The remake focuses on gender inequality as the main subject. Changing the focus of the film hurt the story, in my opinion.
@@SpidermanFan92 I think the problem with the remake is the "virtue signaling", Disney doesn't really care about gender inequality beyond the money they think they can make with it. I think it shows in the remake, so in a way it's terrible because it's fake and also patronizing to the public (and women).
This movie not even worth pirating
Oof
Finally some positive talk about the live-action version! I'll admit, I was peeved about them remaking this one, but after watching it, I had a change of heart.
Thank you for this:)))
I thought Honghui was a prince in disguise 😢
Liu Yifei carried the movie so well. She was the right choice for Mulan. Other choices could have been better. I needed the dramatic refelection song moment. 😄
Also the bath scene has change. In the live action, Mulan start bathing in river, her friend comes to talk with her in the river but she didn't want to, so he goes back after a little talking. He didn't even go near her. Also there was only him. But in the original version, this scene was hilarious, especially with mushu.
no.1: it's not animated
Jeez, why do you people like animated movies so much??
@@gorillaknuckles3976 cuz they cool and filled with fantasy. However i DO believe u can make a gud live action adaptation of an animated film. Its just that the directors of this movie sucked
@@gorillaknuckles3976 Because it's so much easier to suspend disbelief, it's so colorful and fluid and artful. I'm really bummed everything is either live action or 3d now a days. Disney animation was so gorgeous and full of character.
Ever heard of CCP??😎😎
No, because no one's ever mentioned it before on KZhead.
@@KenpoKid77 lol
I literally just watched this like 1 sec ago and this is in my recommendation....nIcE
So everyone is ignoring how good the classic animated version was and decided to go "accurate"
One part that i was expecting most in the real life action movie was the three guys dressing up as girls XD
You can't do that in 2020 otherwise you'll get attacked for making fun of the trans community or something, I'm sure someone would find it offensive and it would be removed like gone with the wind
Corberus true true T^T
It looks more like a history channel movie than a Disney production.
Covid 19-Let it in, lemme go Me: what?
mulan learned to fight, she wasn’t experienced. in the remake she’s experienced-
Switzerland is not even colored in on the Europe map, how could you?
...
Just finished watching it and I’ll warn you it’s not worth your 30 bucks 🥴 the old one is waaayy better, I understand they tried to make it realistic but the whole new added plot is pretty shallow and sloppily written. 5/10. this Mulan brought honor to her family but a definite shame to its predecessor.
realistic? with wall running? with animal transforming witches? with chinese ppl speaking english? pls... dont buy that "we changed things to make it realistic"
@@saphi20 don't forget the chi or ki bs that made her kick arrows and other bs
This is not a good movie, story was meh not good enough as original movie.
It was amazing
It also felt really fast paced imo
that is what all americans say about disrespecting a culture.
For the last time, the Mulan animated film is not the freaking a original story.
Banana Bloop Aren't we talking about Disney's Mulan? The animated is still the original Disney Mulan
Awesome imagination of the legend. My kids watched it 5 times and still love it. A must-watch!
I still can’t wait for the live version
Its just like watching a history movie / cultural and where's the fun in that no mushu no cricket i thought Disney is more than being this boring now i'm mad "no offense"
This is the reason i havent even watched mulan
mushu was offensive religiously to chinese ppl thats why
@@kllie5674 BUT STILL DUDE HE WAS THE REASON WHY THE ANIMATION WAS A HIT AND HE IS ALSO THE REASON WHY MULAN (REAL ONE) FLOPED BADLY
@@xa9872 yea but when a story based on a chinese legend is offensive to chinese ppl, uk somethings up. it was a hit, but only in the westm it flopped in places like china. im not a native chinese, im a southeast asian chinese but my mom and my grandparents wld have been offended by mushu, his character was pretty disrespectful to our culture since we see dragons as gods and symbols of good luck, actually funnily enuf, this was shown better in the mulan 2
@@kllie5674 it was a box office flop THE BUDGET WAS 200,000 AND THEY EARNED 30,000 so bro it was a Booooooooooo
No ‘make a man out of you’ disappointing
I have watched the live action and all i did during the whole movie is to wait mulan sing REFLECTION. But it was removed!
I watched the movie and truly enjoyed it for someone who has not seen the animated ver.
i hate these live action
It’s so different
I saw it today it was amazing I love it ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
They should renamed the title of this video with "How live action Mulan is inferior to the original animation"
Ngl, I actually am eager to watch this. She's gonna be an inspiration for young girls who want to be soldiers!! (My opinion ofc, no hate please) Edit: So, I've read/done some research on some Chinese Mythology, and found out that, the reason why Mulan already knew how to fight. It's because (in Chinese Mythology), women are supposed to know how to fight/defend/protect themselves because many men are gonna be at war. So that's the reason why Mulan already knew how to fight. Hope this helped :).
Girl supports police brutality don't think u want ur kids looking up to her
just watch the animated version if you want a true soldier. Girls won't get anywhere just believing they have chi in them or somewhat :v
@@elliegoo2946 yo wtf, I said 'no hate please its *MY* OPINION.
I'm want to give my opinión with no hate but this story is Just like "if You are not born with chi, You suck" this Mulán is Just a Mary sue and I don't feel inspire by it.
@@emilydiazsalazar422 Remember the time when I asked you for opinion? Yeah, me neither.
So aside from some minor changes they changed A LOT of what was well done in the animated movie, and made it much worse.
I think original has more fight scenes, comedy and romance and emotions. Mulan is injured in the original but in live action the witch throws the blade and she is thrown away on a rock and falls unconscious, that's it, the blade does not injure her as she wore different layers of clothes. Later she just gets up and goes back and fight as a woman.. So they didn't find out she was a woman as she went to them as a woman. That moment was cut😭
In the animation her agency was taking away from her. In a battle no one is really paying attention to what's going on around them. plus they were being bombarded by witch birds so their shields were up. It was so crucial that Mulan surrendered herself as a sign of her growth - hsving the courage to take accountability for her actions
I DID NOT NOTICE THE CRICKET REFERENCE AT FIRST (and that's that only reference I missed).
Still love mulan! They kind of follow the poem
Personally, I loved the new Mulan. It's different enough from the 1998 animated version to feel like a new take in the story, while also adhering more closely to the source material. For me it was worth the price.
I don’t like how basically she was a cardboard cut out because she basically showed no emotion the whole movie
I mean, mushu is what makes mulan story great. Adding donnie yen and jet li, and made the character stray away too far, makes Mulan just like another hongkong kung fu movie.
Everyone that says they hate it and havent watched it yet give it a chance you might like it
It’s too late to save them now- tbh it is a bit bland (watched it yesterday)
Jenevieve Majoor tbh I thought that the Phoenix looked like a kite and it was pretty bad 😬
Jenevieve Majoor yep 😬
It's visually captivating but story flow.... meh.. I'd rather watch the older adaptation of Mulan. I think it was one shown in 2008.
mecha dcruz yuh the witch jumped sides so quickly I was like “what just happened- is she gonna help or what?”
Random fact: Honey does not spoil. You could feasibly eat 3000 year old honey. -SciFacts
I KNOWWW, great fact btw
both are great
honestly really thankful for how she said hua jun and not hua ping, which sounds like a flower vase LOL
Yall should try giving the Chinese Mulan movie a chance. I think it was called Mulan: Rise of a Warrior. It's pretty neat to me.
Didnt like this version of mulan, lacking of depth in characters, and a forgetable movie. Once u finish it its like “ thats it?”
There was a cricket in a cage in the beginning of the film during the northerns first shown raid. I believe it is a nod to the original cricket.
Well, I actually like that they added her sister, because it implies that not all girls should be like Mulan, they should be given the right to make their own choice....and do what they actually like...
