It seems like it's based on both actually, like they have all the emphasis on her comb and they are saying (not singing) lyrics from the movie's songs. Also on the cast list they have the cricket and those three dudes who sang "Girl Worth Fighting For". While they did drop Mushu (I definitely see why), they've technically split Shang's role into the soldier/possible love interest dude and the commander played by Donnie Yen. I'm not overly familiar with the Ballad of Mulan so I'm not sure if the witch and other additions are accurate, but they seem really cool. I do wish they would have added the songs, but they have some epic instrumental versions and it looks really intense and different so I'm happy. I agree on the lion king hypocrisy too it's rather odd.
Most people are accually hating on the movie due to the main actor and the directors support of the police in Hong Kong, when it's those police officers who kill and brutalize protestors on the streets 😒
I don't even care whether this will be good or bad. Mulan is a classic character and story. It will be legendary and I am jealous for the younger generation to be able to get this version.

I have never seen the original animated movie (eep). Judging from the trailers, behind the scenes, and the featurettes, I think I will be in safe hands with this movie as my introduction to Hua Mulan (and then the earlier movie to follow up) :)

1. "You dropped Mushu to be realistic, but add a shapeshifting witch and a phoenix? COME ON DISNEY, NOT WATCHING." Ok, so Shapeshifting witches and Phoenixes (Fenghuangs) were all major figures in Chinese mythology. In that aspect, Disney wasn't going for realism but for a nod to Chinese mythology. Not to mention the poetic sense that the witch (who can turn into a phoenix) will be fighting Mulan (whose sidekick is a phoenix, the yin to the phoenix' yang). Dragons were big parts as well but the way they portrayed Mushu was so different from the mythologies that it was downright disrespectful. Dragons were these huge, majestic figures, and Disney couldn't put that character in a movie because he'd be too hard to conceal. A phoenix is essentially a mystical bird, so it'd be easier to hide. 2. "Mulan DOESN'T SUPPORT police brutality in Hong Kong! Boycott this film!" First of all, no one ever said she supports police brutality. She said she supported the police and chances are, with all the media restrictions and biased media in China, she only sees the protesters being violent and not the police. She may have American citizenship, but she got that from her dad and left America when she was 12 after being there for 4 years and hasn't been back until now to do press for this film. Second of all, celebrity lives aren't as cushy as they are in America. Under the totalitarian government that is the CCP, it's an obligation to support them, as a celebrity. The photo that she REPOSTED is basically a call from the government to support them, and she kinda had no choice. That photo was shared by many other Chinese celebrities before and after her. Blackmail is a huge problem with CCP, and most probably this was the case. Whether or not she was in China or not, her whole family is there in China. In fact, her grandmother is still in Wuhan (which she donated to). 3. "WITHOUT SHANG, MUSHU, AND CRIKEE, IS THIS STILL EVEN MULAN?!" I feel like people who say this don't know that Mulan was originally a very popular Chinese folktale and poem. What I don't understand is why people are basically saying "What?! The sidekicks are gone? It's not Mulan anymore even if Mulan is still there! Every character except Mulan is what made the film great! Mulan isn't about filial piety and finding one's true self, it's about funny characters!" The most important about Mulan is Mulan and the journey she went through, not the funny characters. Also, Shang is basically still in it. Just separated into two characters, and according to the novelization and the people who have seen it, the bi energy is stronger with this guy than it was with Shang. They literally take a bath together while he thinks she's a man. SPOILER: She really says: "I've never kissed a man" and he goes "Neither have I." THE KISS SCENE btw is still in the movie. It just isn't in the Chinese release, but it's in the western release. I feel like the reason this film is getting so much backlash (both in the entertainment and political sphere) is that Westerners and some Asians are really tone-deaf to actual Chinese aspects. In the political sense, China sucks, especially for a celebrity because most of the time you have no choice but to support them. Choose not to support them and you won't see a loved one again. While she could have not said anything, again blackmail is a big problem. In an entertainment sense, westerners need to understand that to us, Asians, the way our deities and mythologies are presented are really important to us because these are stories we all grew up with. I mean come on Americans got mad when Donald Trump didn't say anything in the Hall of Presidents in Disneyland. Native Americans were pissed at how Pocahontas was portrayed and how it romanticized what happened between settlers and Native Americans. Imagine how the Chinese felt when one of their great figures was reduced into a tiny, goofy sidekick. Also people need to understand that every film company wants China's money. The only reason people are calling Disney out for it is that this story is actually Chinese so the pandering is palpable.

I hope this movie becomes a success but I am worried that the coronavirus plus the Anti-Chinese/Asian sentiment is going to hurt the movie's box office.
Not to mention the lead actress's pro-police brutality/anti-democracy views and the general public expecting it to be like the classic film.

For months of protest, the protesters were creating chaos and endless provoking behaviours, and in an effort to curb violence and restore order, it is true that a number of policemen went a little further and injured a few people. However, it is also true that the protesters themselves were behaving like criminals. They humiliated and beat up people out of discrimination against the mainland Chinese or basically towards anyone who speaks Mandarin, smashed buildings and burned MTR stations, created lethal weapons like fire arrows, petrol bombs, molotov cocktails, and fired them at policemen and civilians, they even killed an elderly cleaner with bricks and set fire on another older man over an argument. What Liu posted was merely a retweeted post from a journalist from the Chinese mainland, who really got beaten up by those HK protesters, and in response to to this, Liu, along with many other celebrities, started sharing that retweeted post.

The police ganged up with thugs to start terrorist attacks at innocent citizens in railway stations, they also rapped, causing permanent injuries to the protestors including the peaceful ones, denied their rights to meet their families and lawyers which was completely violating the basic law. On top of that, they even killed them claimed those as "unsuspicious suicidal cases". The protestors views were to ask the government fullfill promises that was signed for "sino british declaration" that was never met. Also, setting up an independent investigation for the whole incident. These are all legit demands that the gov refused to do so all they do is use the police to beat or kill them all.

I know people in HK who told me that some protesters try to kill the police with no reason and then there are some who don't start any problems with them. This looks so good!🔥😍 I don't mind if this wasn't like the animated movie, I take this like a reimagination of the source material. This is better than remaking the animated movie because where's the thrill in that? Plus I see people pointing out that this doesn't have Mushu but has a shape shifting witch. I may not be Chinese (I'm Asian) but when I saw some Chinese movies with historical/fantasy elements, it's kinda a normal thing to have those. Disney wanted to make this a more true to the ballad version with the addition of Disney magic. So please just stop the hate. If you like this, good. If not, don't watch it and don't ruin it for people that are excited for this.

Mulan (1998) makes me think that damage to Disney wouldn't do if he decided to adapt War and Peace by Tolstoy. The film without mushu, comical characters, music and comedy is much better. That animation doesn't deserve the name of Mulan.

Disney Mulan movies have almost no connections to the real historical interpretation of this individual. Mulan was a Xianbei (non-Han Chinese nomad) warrior who lived during the Northern Wei Dynasty (ruled by the Xianbei Tuoba clan). She achieved fame and recognition for following the warrior Emperor Taiwu (Tuoba Tao) on his grand expedition against the northern Rouran tribes into outer Mongolia, during which why were able to completely devastate the Rouran and capture their chieftain. Emperor Taiwu was a man in his 20s who was renowned as one of the most fearsome military commanders of his time and throughout the entirety of China's Northern and Southern Dynasty Periods. This is all evidenced in the Song of Mulan, the original medieval period poem that gave birth to the story of Mulan. In the poem the Chinese Emperor is referred to as Great Khan, a clear indicator of the fact that he was non-Han Chinese and of Xianbei descent. The poem also clearly lays out the location of Mulan's exploits being in the Hangai mountains regions of modern day Mongolia, well away from the Chinese dynasty's territories. I really like the actress Liu Yifei. I watched her drama, "So Young : Never Gone" and it was really good. But that was like 2 yrs ago. When the trailer of Mulan was shown in one of the international tv channels, I recognized her and said to my family that she is a nice actress and this movie is definately going to be a hit. Im looking forward to watching this on theatres!
