The outside of this Live Oak bowl turned fairly easily. The inside was a whole other story. Torture! Finished in shellac.

Cool, thank you, Margaret! 😊
What a masterpiece of nature! "Out of the strong, came forth sweetness" or something like that 😄
😊
Just love the finished bowl. My mum, sister, brother and I love how you finish the bark. A lot of other woodturners don't sand the bark. We Love your Howdy
Thank you, Cathy! You make me feel like part of the family! 😊
Good evening, Phil. Good things take time. Your bowl this week is an excellent example. Stay warm and enjoy the pot roast.
Thanks, Ray! 😊
The grain is amazing, it never seizes to delight, the different colours. Looking awesome.
Thank you! Cheers! 😊

Couldn't agree more! 😊
It's Thursday Phil day! Time to watch art! Thanks again, my friend!
Thank you, Dick! 😊
Woow Phil. The markings inside are like a galaxy in space. Beautiful.
Cool, Sue, thank you! 😊
What a lovely elephant foot bowl. It’s beautiful and reminds me of my mom. She collected elephants and since her passing I now collect them. Beautiful job!
Cool! Thanks, Madonna! 😊
What a fabulous result, well done Phil👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
😊
Wow!! You never cease to amaze me Phil. I always enjoy watching your videos.
Cool, thanks, Jay! 😊
OK That is nice. My favorite of your wood turnings, so far
😊
You have a lot more staywithitness than I would have. Congratulations on another great project.
Thank you! 😊
Phil this bowl though hard to turn came out beautiful. I always love the fact you keep alot of it's natural beauty. That for sure shows the true mind of an artist like yourself. Be well
Thank you kindly, Linda! 😊
She's a real beauty and you have done wonders...again!
😊
That is awesome Mr. Phil. I'm absolutely loving how this one turned out.
Cool, thanks, Greg! 😊
It looked like an elephant foot before it was altered. Beautiful bowl love every thing about it❤
😊
Love the rough heavy look of this piece, BEAUTIFUL!
Cool, thanks, Richard! 😊
When I first saw the piece, I thought he's going to make a vase. Then you said you were going to make a bowl, I thought, but what about the vase........I love that bowl. Absolutely a beautiful piece of work. You were right, it was supposed to be a bowl.
Haha, thank you, Pilgrim! 😊
Phil I think that every piece Tuffy sends you is a challenge every time. And still you manage it to make it a juwel
I try, Erik. Thank you! 😊
A GREAT work of art!! You brought out a marvelous gift from a gnarly piece of wood! FANTASTIC!!
Thank you so much Colleen! 😊
WOW, THANK YOU VERY MUCH PHIL ...👁 really like this one (get it?)... You are correct Phil, I have zero idea where or when I found it. Sorry for all that hard dirty work BUT after you have rested a bit all of your HOURS of effort will be admired for YEARS to come. Another awesome experience that is over far too quickly. I eagerly wait until your next performance. I LOVE OAK & I love what you did to her... TM
Thanks Tuffy for sending him a “heal-over” blank. I am too stingy with mine to send him one! Hope he turns the next one with bark off the rim. Wood too pretty to leave under the bark! 😂😂😂
@@valeriehenschel1590 Thank You Valerie... Ah, I am not into all of the woodturning terminology (yet). So any wood with a wound partially covered is coveted by turners? I see sooo much figured wood of all kinds in my area and sometimes think "there must NOT be very many woodturners around"? So much is left to rot, ugh! (why?). The best pieces of wood I have found, passing by houses, are buried in woodpiles for future burning. Hundreds of standing dead trees I have passed. I can see the parts of possible beauty but it usually all just goes into the woodchipper when the tree is taken down. It makes me feel good to watch Phil transform all of the pieces his loyal viewers have found into wonderfully attractive, useful objects. To show all the mystery of what is hidden inside.... OK Valerie excepting for all of that bark-ie stuff on the outside, HA. Take Care... TM
You send me some pretty tuff pieces, Tuffy and this one is right up there with the tuffest! 😊 Yes, I got it!
@@tuffymartinez Thanks for sending that (and all the other ones) to Phil so we all can enjoy them. Bill
@@williamellis8993 Absolutely Bill, you, me and everyone. Phil never, ever disappoints. Phil's turnings puts a hop in my step & keeps my eyes peeled hiking the hills😊... TM
Your preserverance paid off. It's beautiful Phil.
😊
Well Phil you out did yourself again 👏 it turned out better than I thought it would be thanks so much for a great job 😊
Thank you so much, Ray! 😃
The bark rim makes it look like it's chocolate dipped. Lovely!
😊
At the start of the show you turned the wood and I saw twice an elephant foot. So for me this beautiful bowl will be know to me as the Elephant Foot Bowl. This name is fitting as I watch a lot of dirt and dust come off this elephant foot 😀. This bowl is lovely Phil. Thanks for the show. Joel
I was thinking the same thing about the elephant foot.
I changed the name of the video because of your comment and so many others saying the same thing, Joel! 😊
...wow...was that a lot of work!!!...we'll have to start calling him Toughy Martinez if he keeps sending projects like this...😉 It came out gorgeous...very well done! Matt
No doubt! Thank you! 😊
That turned out to be a nice character piece. The patch in the middle was certainly hard - that's the first time I've seen wood polished by a carbide bit!
😊
Hi from Grantham in the UK, 11.10pm here. Relaxing watching before bed x
Hope you enjoyed it! 😊
Yes, I always do, you make some seriously special stuff x
Another masterpiece. I really love that you saved the rim.
Thank you so much 😊
Cor blimey Phil, that was a war of attrition, well done. Looks beautiful. Thanks for sharing, stay safe, Jules, Droitwich, England
Haha, it was! Thank you, Jules! 😊
What you started with was a limb that growing over with new bark. making a wonderful piece Phil.
😊
Phil, I think this is one of my favorite pieces. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you like it, thank you, Thomas!! 😊
Phil you started with an Elephants foot and ended with a Stunning piece
😊
Sticking to it sure paid off in spades, Phil. Very, very nice, indeed.
😊
Wow! I love that grain. Thanks once again for sharing and inspiring.
Thanks, Steve! 😊
I sure had a few doubts when you started into the centre of the bowl. You saved it. Great job.
😊
Hi Phil from Phil. A great looking please of wood 🪵. Turned into a lovely looking bowl. I thought it looks like a elephants foot When you first started with it, A great job 👏 Phil. I look forward to seeing your next project, I have a large tree down in the garden, there could be some lovely wood for turning on it . I hope you are keeping safe and well, I look forward to your next project, PHIL FROM THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOULIN FRANCE.
Best of luck with your garden wood, Phil! 😊
Looks very good , the live edge is fantastic looking it’s as if it was grown to be that bowl . Thanks Phil
That's what made me want to turn this piece, Randy, that edge! 😃
That bowl is so interesting and exquisite! Love this one😍. Well, I must admit that I love all of your work. Nice job, Phil!👍😁
Thank you! Cheers! 😊
Back at ya! 😁
Really nice bowl, Phil. It was a battle but your perseverance paid off and you were well rewarded. Bill
😊
Hey Phil, look straight into the bottom of the bowl with the gap at the bottom. You have a smiling face with the left eye giving a great big wink!! This is the best bowl so far in 2023. Finally a bowl with inclusions, gaps and real character. Keep up the good work and soldier on!
I'll take another look, Jerry, thanks! 😊
A beautiful piece. Love your channel. Thanks so much for all the enjoyment.
Thank you too for watching! 😊
Hey there Phil! That elephant's foot transformed into a nice bowl.
😊
Absolutely amazing, I thought the wood looked like an Elephant’s foot to start with. Thank you for a very entertaining and enjoyable turn.
😊
Beautiful job! Very challening and we were rewarded with your genius. Thank you.
😊
That turned out really nice. It looks like an elephants foot in the final footage. Another great bowl.
😊
Really fabulous grain in that Oak & l love a live edge ❤
Thank you, Karen, me too! 😊
This bowl is absolutely stunning, Phil! The bark rim, the complex colors, the grain, and all the inclusions make this one a stand-out turning for sure. A new favorite! Thanks!
Thanks, Greg! 😊
You really had to fight for that one. Great to watch. 💕
Thank you, Vickie! 😊
A most beautiful bowl Mr. Anderson🙂. Thank you.
😊
You could take this piece to a history class. Explain what the Dust Bowl was like. Another beautiful piece. thank you for taking us with you.
Haha, maybe! 😊
Hey Phil, Nice job. Yes it was dirt. Dirt often builds up where a limb was cut off like that one. I seen it often when cutting wood for the fire as a child. Yall have a wonderful day.
Thanks, Allyn! 😃
Boy Phil you really know how to keep me on the edge of my seat. I admire your perseverance to the end. The lady in the bowl is almost spiritual. There really no one like you and your art. This is my new favorite live edge bowl. Thank you.
Wow, thank you, Mavourneen! 😊
The grain is beautiful, but the bark really sets the piece off. Another great piece Phil. The dirt is the wood rotting back into dirt.
😊
Carbides ! Next it will be resin Phil ! 😂🤣😂 I remember Jim Sprague saying in his videos he had no interest in resin , now look 🤣 But seriously a lovely hard fought for bowl . Lots of interest in that wood . Pleasure as always . 👍
Thank you, Jim! 😊
I love Oak. I turn mostly Oak and Pecan. Sometimes for a piece to turn out as nice as this one, you have to work your butt off. But it's worth it in the end. As always, another great video.
😊
I kept grinding my teeth every time you cut at the top I was certain the cap was going to come off thanks to your experience and patience you created a charm from what was destined to be firewood to others
Thank you, Rene! 😊
I've watched you turn a lot of bowls but this one has to be one of my favorites. You out did yourself this time! Also overworked yourself! HA!
😊
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil what a brilliant bowl, I liked how you managed to cut it so as to mount it in the lathe with the bark forming the top of the bowl. Beautiful end result worth all your efforts and you certainly earned your dinner after. Thanks Phil. See you next time.
Thank you, John, I appreciate the time you spend watching and commenting on my videos! 😊
Awesome again. This piece reminds me of the ugly duckling. Amazing at the beauty you can find in a piece of wood. Keep it up!
Thank you so much! 😊
Phil, very nice bowl!!! At first I had my doubts, because the wood was so pitted. I didn't think you would get past it, but it turned out awesome!! Very nice 👌!!! Well done 👏!!!
Glad you enjoyed it, John, thanks! 😊
As usual wonderful, you really have an eye for what you want to get out of the pieces. A 👍 of course Carsten
Thank you! Cheers! 😊
Can you see the alien or bald headed man with the large cranium on the side. Your pieces always have such interesting features Phil. So cool.
Yes! 😊
Thank you for sharing this unique interesting and beautiful bowl. It is truly a work of art. ❤😃
Thank you very much! 😊
Wow there is a lot going on with this piece of wood. There are places that look like an old volcano lava run. Beautiful bowl Phil.
Thank you, Jean! 😊
Phil, the deeper you went the better the wood became, you did have to fight for a bit there but the end result is fantastic, well done
Well, I knew the bottom was OK because I'd already turned it. It was just a matter of getting through the crud! Thank you, Alan! 😊
That is definitely a very unique piece Phil looks great 👍👍
😊
What a hidden treasure you found! Glad that you were more persistent than the tree. It looks like the deadwood branch was composting itself and showing you the different stages. You exposed the beauty just in time.
Yes, I'm glad we got down to solid wood in time! 😊
1st LOL. See you in the morning with my tea
Deal! 😊
Phil, that is absolutely gorgeous!
Thanks, Carol! 😊
A pleasure as always. What a beautiful piece.
😊
Beautiful work Phil, who else would have thought of putting an elephants foot in a lathe and getting this lol. I do feel sorry for the three foot elephant? Thank you Phil, I enjoyed the show.
😊
I just realized that I didn’t comment. Sad! This was truly a beautiful piece! Sorry it was such work, but I think it’s gorgeous! The wife saw faces inside of it. Please keep it up!
Thank you very much, Ted! 😊
Another great and interesting bowl Phil . All that texture ! Thank you for sharing .
😊
Hi Phil Darrell from. REDDING Here That's the prettiest piece of oak I've ever seen. Congrats Hope your Pot Roast was good Thanks again Darrell
It was! Thank you, Darrell! 😊
Yet again Phil an awesome piece of work with an awesome piece of wood once again thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Once again Phil I am really impressed
Thank you, Rob! 😊
Live Oak is such a difficult wood to work. It’s got a lot of mineralization and it just dulls tools so fast. Beautiful result!
Yes. Luckily, sharpening takes less than a minute. 😊
This one was definitely worth the effort that you had to put into it. Great job again!
😊
Started with a elephant foot, ended up with a excellent bowl. Thanks
😊
I enjoy watching your various projects and I get some ideas for my own turning. Hello from Wicklow, Ireland
Awesome! Thank you, Ivan in Ireland!! 😊
This is one of my favorites! This piece of wood has so much character! Thanks for taking the time to make videos for all to enjoy.
Thank you, Eileen! 😊
EXCELLENT Video, Phil. After watching you work so Professionally and Patiently I now know, at 81 years of age, I would never have made it in wood-turning. As beautiful as I could see that log was, I know it would have finished up on my Fire Log pile very early on. Well Done, Phil, Keep it up, I'll be happy to just sit and watch a Craftsman at work.
Thank you, Cliff! 😊
One of your best Phil love me some Oak, I was watching and thinking use the carbide then use the scraper Phil, had a smile to myself when you did, you are certainly back on form. 😁
Great minds, Lewis! 😊
That is an AWESOME BOWL. Thanks for sharing
😊
Love the end result. I had a plum tree in my front yard that I had to dig up because ants ate most of the hart out and took up residence in it. I hoped to turn the trunk but when I cut a blank from that it was all dirt nothing left to turn. I did a few small turning from some of the branches it’s a pretty wood. Enjoyed the video. Dan
Dang ants! 😊
I no nothing about turning wood but that looks fantastic.👍
Works for me, Bruce, thank you! 😃
That is such a beautiful piece of wood. I have several pieces of live Oak. Have big pieces, so they will have to wait until I get that bigger lathe. Great job Phil. Have a great weekend!!!
😊
The nicest bowl that I have seen you make , well done
Thank you, Gary! 😃
It's a beauty Phil, love it - great to see you!
Thanks, Paul! 😊
So much trouble but well worth all of your effort. One of, if not my all time favorite.
Thank you, David! 😊
What an exquisite bowl!!! I absolutely love the look of that bowl. Thank you for your creativity and sharing your work with those of us who appreciate beautiful wood too. Sincerely from Canada
Thank you Ms Bee from Canda! 😊
Hi phil credit due to alll the fabulous work on all your videos 👍👍 best regards Matt from the uk 👍👍
You are a true artist Phil! I enjoy your videos a LOT!
I'm glad, Peggy, thank you! 😊
Wow! That's exquisite. I think you are right when you say it's not a root. Depending on where it was and how it sat on the tree, dirt could have accumulated in residual water and slowly seeped into the wood over the years.
Thank you, Andrew! 😃
Lovely! I think this one should be brought to your personal hallo of fame
Thank you, Kerstin! 😊
Ya beauty, that really looked hard going in the dirt. But again you came out tops, Irene really loved that one, lot of features and a grand finish. Top job. All the best from us both in Lincolnshire UK
Thanks to you and Irene, Gary! 😊
Phil. From the beginning of the video, I thought this piece looked like an Elephants foot. Even more so after you finished with it. Absolutely gorgeous piece, "Triple Wow".
😊
